Iron Deficiency Anemia
• What is Iron Deficiency Anemia?
– Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common anemia (low red blood cell level) caused by insufficient dietary intake and absorption of iron, and/or iron loss from intestinal bleeding.

– Iron deficiency causes approximately half of all anemia cases worldwide, and affects women more often than men.
Iron Deficiency Anemia
Iron deficiency can be divided into three phases
Hematological findings
• Decreased red blood cell (RBC) count and hemoglobin levels • Increased mean corpuscular volume (MCV, >95 fl) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) • The reticulocyte count is decreased. • The platelet count may be reduced. • Neutrophil granulocytes may show multisegmented nuclei • Anisocytosis (increased variation in RBC size) and poikilocytosis (abnormally shaped RBCs). • Macrocytes (larger than normal RBCs) are present. • Ovalocytes (oval-shaped RBCs) are present. • Howell-Jolly bodies (chromosomal remnant) also present.

The inhibition of DNA synthesis
Cause
Pathogenesis
• The defect in red cell DNA synthesis is most often due to hypovitaminosis, specifically a deficiency of vitamin B12 and/or folic acid. • When DNA synthesis is impaired, the cell cycle cannot progress from the G2 growth stage to the mitosis (M) stage. • The pathological state of megaloblastosis is characterized by many large immature and dysfunctional red blood cells (megaloblasts) in the bone marrow and also by hypersegmented neutrophils.
Megaloblastic Anemia
• What is Megaloblastic Anemia?
– Megaloblastic anemia is an anemia (of macrocytic classification) that results from inhibition of DNA synthesis in red blood cell production.
