A Study on Timothy Richard’s Translation Projects

from the Perspective of Medio-translatology

ABSTRACT

In late Qing dynasty, western missionaries played a rather significant role in introducing a large amount of western learning into China. Timothy Richard was one of them. He brought the western social culture as well as advanced science and technology into China through translation practice, which had a far-reaching influence on China at that time. As a missionary, government officer and translator, Timothy Richard assisted people in coping with natural disaster, came into imitate contact with Chinese officials and translated a large number of western books, including Looking Backwards, 2000—1887 and The Nineteenth Century: A History. Looking Backwards, 2000—1887 imagines a future where the social system of capitalism withers away in the United States, and is replaced by the socialist ideology and its corresponding social system. In 1888, the book was published in America, and before long it was introduced into China by Timothy Richard and serialized with the title of Hui Tou Kan Ji Lue in A Review of the Times（《万国公报》）—the important publication of T he Christian Literature Society for China(广学会).Entitled as Bai Nian Yi Jiao, the translation of Looking Backwards, 2000—1887 was offprinted and published by The Christian Literature Society for China in 1894. As one scarcely translated secular literary works of Timothy Richard, Bai Nian Yi Jiao is no doubt of huge value for the further research of his translation projects. Tai Xi Xin Shi Lan Yao, with its extensive content of the development history of capitalist countries in the 19th century,is the first translated book from the west in Chinese modern history, and enjoyed great popularity in late Qing Dynasty. Therefore, it is of crucial significance to do research into Timothy Richard’s translation strategies.

Traditional literary translation is usually endowed with a great social and cultural function that undertakes the mission to disseminate a certain ideology, especially in a given historical context.
