The scarlet letter

The scarlet letter

Arthur Dimmesdale
Dimmesdale was a scholar. He is probably somewhat aloof, the kind of man who would not have much natural sympathy for ordinary men and women. However, Dimmesdale has an unusually active conscience. The fact that Hester takes all of the blame for their shared sin goads his conscience, and his resultant mental anguish and physical weakness open up his mind and allow him to empathize with others. The personal guilt drives Dimmesdale to further internalize his guilt and self-punishment and leads to still more deterioration in his physical and spiritual condition.
Pearl Prynne
Hester’s daughter, Pearl, functions primarily as a symbol. Her real importance lies in her ability to provoke the adult characters in the book. Pearl makes us constantly aware of her mother’s scarlet letter and of the society that produced it. From an early age, she fixates on the emblem. Pearl’s innocent, or perhaps intuitive, comments about the letter raise crucial questions about its meaning. Similarly, she inquires about the relationships between those around her.

作者简介:华盛顿·欧文(Washington Irving)(1789-1895),美国浪漫主义作家,也是一个纯文学作家,他的写作态度是”writing for pleasure and to produce pleasure"。

这篇短篇小说,《瑞普·凡·温克尔》便是摘自《见闻札记》.Rip Van WinkleA Posthumous Writing of Diedrich KnickerbockerBy Washington Irving(T HE FOLLOWING tale was found among the papers of the late Diedrich Knickerbocker,an old gentleman of New York, who was very curious in the Dutch history of the province, and the manners of the descendants from its primitive settlers。

His historical researches, however, did not lie so much among books as among men; for the former are lamentably scanty on his favorite topics;whereas he found the old burghers, and still more their wives, rich in that legendary lore so invaluable to true history. Whenever, therefore, he happened upon a genuine Dutch family, snugly shut up in its low—roofed farmhouse, under a spreading sycamore, he looked upon it as a little clasped volume of black—letter, and studied it with the zeal of a bookworm。

It revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge, ideas, and information, paving the way for the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, and countless other intellectual and cultural advancements. While the origins of printing techniques can be traced back to ancient China, it was the innovative genius of Johannes Gutenberg in mid-15th century Europe that brought about a truly groundbreaking invention.Gutenberg's brilliance lay in his development of movable type, individual metal pieces bearing a raised letterform. This seemingly simple innovation allowed for the mass production of printed materials, as the reusable type could be arranged and rearranged to compose differenttexts. The implications were profound. No longer wasprinting confined to laborious manual transcription or the painstaking carving of wooden blocks; it became a swift, efficient, and scalable process.Gutenberg's printing press, a sophisticated contraption of his own design, further enhanced the efficiency of the printing process. The press applied precise pressure to the type, transferring the inked letters onto paper or parchment. The combination of movable type and the printing press created a system that could produce large quantitiesof identical, high-quality printed material.Gutenberg's most famous work, the Gutenberg Bible, stands as a testament to hisизобретательность . This magnificen t volume, completed around 1455, was the first substantial book printed using movable type in Europe. Within a few decades, printing presses were established in major cities across Europe. Printers, eager to exploit the commercial potential of this new medium, produced a vast array of publications. Books, pamphlets, newspapers, and other printed materials flooded the market, catering to diverse audiences. Literacy rates soared as printed works became more affordable and accessible. The impact of movable type printing extended far beyond the realm of literature. It played a pivotal role in the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Scientific treatises, previously limited to handwritten manuscripts, could now be widely distributed, fostering the exchange of ideas and discoveries. The spread of scientific knowledge contributed to the rise of the Scientific Revolution.Movable type printing also had a profound impact on education. The printing of textbooks and educationalmaterials facilitated the establishment of schools and universities. Students could now access a wealth of knowledge previously unavailable to them, leading to a more educated populace. The printed word became a powerful tool for disseminating ideas, shaping public opinion, and influencing political and social discourse. The invention of movable type printing by Johannes Gutenberg was a watershed moment in human history. It unlocked the potential for mass communication, accelerated the spread of knowledge, and laid the foundation for the modern information age. As an intangible cultural heritage, it is the dedication of the woodblock printing artisans that keeps this tradition alive. This essay will delve into the life and work of one such artisan, Mr. Zhang, a master of this disappearing craft.Mr. Zhang, a native of Hangzhou, has spent his entire life in the service of preserving the art of woodblock printing. He is a living embodiment of the phrase 'passing on the torch,' as he is one of the few remaining非遗(Intangible Cultural Heritage) inheritors of thistraditional technique. His journey began at a young age when he was apprenticed to his father, who was also arenowned woodblock printer. The apprenticeship was not just about learning a skill; it was a passage into a world of history, art, and patience. The process of woodblock printing is intricate and requires immense precision and skill. It begins with carving the text or design onto a wooden block, applying ink, and then pressing the block onto paper. Each step demands a level of dexterity and focus that only comes with years of practice. Mr. Zhang's hands, calloused from years of carving, tell a story of perseverance and love for his craft.Despite the advent of modern printing methods, Mr. Zhang remains steadfast in his commitment to woodblock printing. For him, it's not just about producing a physical copy; it's about preserving the soul of the text. Each stroke of his chisel is a tribute to the past, each printed page a connection to the future. He believes that this art form carries the essence of Chinese culture, reflecting its philosophy, aesthetics, and spirituality. Moreover, Mr. Zhang is not content with merely maintaining the tradition. He actively seeks to pass on hisknowledge to the younger generation. He conducts workshops and classes, sharing his skills and passion with students, hoping to ignite a spark that will keep the flame of woodblock printing burning. His dedication to teaching is a testament to his belief that the survival of非遗 lies not just in preservation but also in transmission. In a world increasingly driven by digital technology, the resilience of非遗 traditions like woodblock printingis remarkable. Mr. Zhang's story serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding our cultural heritage. His life's work is a celebration of craftsmanship, a tribute to the past, and a hope for the future. His journey is a testament to the enduring power of human creativity and the significance of preserving our intangible cultural assets. In conclusion, the art of woodblock printing, through the dedicated hands of非遗 inheritors like Mr. Zhang, continues to thrive. Their work is a bridge between history and modernity, a link to our collective cultural memory. As we marvel at the beauty of their creations, let us also remember the importance of supporting and appreciating these living legacies. For it is through their hands thatwe can touch the past, understand the present, and envision a future where the echoes of our heritage continue to resonate.。

At the Place
