Last March it was the rule of Uranus(天王星), and last week astronomers announced what may turn outto be a new planet, though a very small one, in the solar system. The object was first sighted last month by Charles Kowal, an astronomer at the Hale Observatories in Pasadena, Calif. Mr Kowal observed a faint trail of light on photographic plates, indicating that something was moving in relation to the background of stars. Other observers have confirmed the discovery. The “miniplanet”, identi fied for the time being as “ObjectKowal”,appears to be about 1.5 billion miles away, between the orbit of Saturn and Uranus, and its diameter(直径) has been estimated at between 100 and 400 miles. Its orbit has not been determined yet, but if the orbit proves to be roughly circular, like that of the major planets, the new object would probably take 66 to 70 years to make a circuit of the sun. Some astronomers have speculated that Mr Kowal’s discovery may be the first indication of an asteroid(小行星)belt beyond Saturn.语篇导读本文介绍了目前在太阳系新发现的可能是一颗小行星的天体。

Unit 4 Astronomy the science of the stars李仕才一、阅读理解。
The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new recipes on the Internet or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new language. We use the Internet to connect with family and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. The list goes on and on.As far as the Internet being a part of our lives—well, that train has left the station. That expression means there is no going back. If you prefer boating, you can say that ship has sailed. So, there may be no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers.Study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online were more likely to have high blood pressure.High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra strain increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke.High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney disease. It is also closely linked to some forms of dementia, a brain disease. Dementia is marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and a reduced ability to reason.Let’s introduce something about the study of it.The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. It involved 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old. One hundred thirty-four of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. Researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use and high blood pressure. Other research has connected that heavy Internet use with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity. The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. In a statement she said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life but it shouldn’t consume us. ”For the purpose of the study, she explains, teens considered heavy Internet users were online on “average 25 hours a week. ”Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take “regular breaks from their computers or smartphones” and to do some “kind of physical activity. ”She also suggests that parents limit their children’s use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.【文章大意】互联网如此有用并且融入我们的生活, 但过度使用它, 会导致多种健康问题。

He created the Uncle Milton Ant Farm more than half a century ago. Today, grandchildren of the first ant colony owners are watching ants working hard on the ton Levine was not trained in the study of insects, also known as entomology. But he knew a lot about ants, and he designed an appealing way to share his knowledge.Mr Levine began his career as a maker of unusual toys after World War Ⅱ. He had returned to his birthplace in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after serving in the United States military. He got the idea for his future career from a business newsletter, which suggested that the best chances for jobs at the time were in toys. He decided to make toys. They understood that American society was about to change. The huge population increase known as the Baby Boom was beginning. There would be a huge demand for children's toys. One day, he saw ants parading around a swimming pool. The sight made Mr Levine remember how much he had liked watching ants as a boy on his uncle's farm. Those thoughts gave him the idea for the Uncle Milton Ant Farm.Milton Levine developed a narrow, green plastic container. The top looked like a farm, showing a farmhouse, a barn, a bridge and a windmill(风车).Under those images was a divider that separated the ants' underground and abovegroundareas.Under that was the sand where people could watch the ants digging passageways. The first Uncle Milton Ant Farms were an immediate success. They were sold in 1956.Two years later, two million of the educational toys had been sold.Through the years the toys continued to attract antwatchers. People buy Uncle Milton Ant Farms from stores and order from websites. During his life, Mr Levine saw the sale of more than twenty million of his ant colonies. The Uncle Milton Ant Farm tells far more than how to care for the ants. For example, people receiving an Uncle Milton Ant Farm learn that the little insects are strong. Some can carry loads fifty times heavier than they are. A writerremembers owning an Uncle Milton Ant Farm when he was about five years old.He says he became very good at numbers by counting the ants.16.Which of the following words can best describe Milton Levine?A.Strong. In some, the use of languages other than the national language is bannedin public spaces such as advertising posters. One of the first such legal provisions was the 1994 “Toubon law” in France, and the idea has been copied in many countries since then. Such efforts to govern language use are often considered as futile by language experts, who are well aware of the difficulty in controlling fashions in speech and know from research that language switching among bilinguals is a natural process. It is especially difficult for native speakers of English to understand the desire to maintain the “purity” of a language by law. Since the time of Shakespeare, English has continually absorbed foreign words into its own language. English is one of the most mixed and rapidly changing languages in the world, but that has not been a barrier to acquiring superiority and power. Another reason for the failure of many native English speakers to understand the role of the state regulation is that it has never been the AngloSaxon way of doing things. English has never had a statecontrolled authority for the language, similar, for example, to the Academic Francaise in France. The need to protect national languages is, for most western Europeans, a recent phenomenon—especially the need to ensure that English does not unnecessarily take over too many fields. Public communication, education and new ways of communication promoted by technology, may be key fields to defend.20.Neville Alexander believes that ________.A.mothertongue education is not practiced in all African countriesB.globalization has resulted in the economic failure of AfricaC.globalization has led to the rise of multilanguage trendD.lack of mothertongue education can lead to economic failure21.The underlined word “futile” (in Paragraph 2) most probably means“________”.A.workable B.practicalC.useless D.unnecessary22.Why do many Englishspeaking countries not support the language protection efforts described in the passage?A.They have a long history of taking words from other languages.B.They want their language to spread to other countries.C.They think language protection laws are ineffective.D.It reduces a language's ability to acquire international importance.23.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.English has taken over fields like public communication and education.B.Many aspects of national culture are threatened by the spread of English.C.Most language experts believe it is important to promote a national language.D.Europeans have long realized the need to protect a national language.24.The best title for the passage is “________”.A.Fighting against the rule of EnglishB.Protecting local languages and identitiesC.Globalization and multilanguage trendD.To maintain the purity of language by law课时作业(十四)Ⅰ.1.D 考查冠词。

课时作业14Ⅰ.阅读理解(2019·临沂市临沭高三阶段性检测)Sitting under the national flag and separated from the media by a transparent glass wall, 50yearold Jing Haipeng and 37yearold Chen Dong appeared calm as they prepare to be part of, what is scheduled to be, China's longestever manned spaceflight mission. The two were scheduled to spend a total of 33 days in orbit. This would be the 3rd trip into space for veteran Chinese astronaut Jing Haipeng. He has been on the Shenzhou7 mission in 2008 and the Shenzhou9 miss ion in 2012. The mission's commander was also part of docking missions (太空对接任务) on both his previous space flights, giving him the experience needed to help dock Shenzhou11 with Tiangong2. Jing Haipeng said, “With the past 18 years of intensive professio nal astronaut training, together with the two previous experiences I've had flying in space, I'm very confident and determined that this mission is going to be a great success. Personally, I'm much calmer and in a more positive headspace than I was during my previous missions. I'm very proud to be here to greet our country. I know my confidence is shared with the rest of our entire space program.”With an unblemished flight record of 15 hundred hours as a pilot, 37yearold Chen Dong was chosen in 2010 to be part of the next generation of Chinese astronauts. He too said he was confident of heading into the mission, even though it would be his first time in space. “I have the chance to join my first mission after 6 years of intensive training and learning. For me, the timing is perfect—not too early, but not too late either. When we train, Jing is my teacher. In life, he is my brother. He is so dedicated, and demands only the best from me and the others that he works with. Because of his experience, I am very lucky to be paired with him on this mission into space.” After being put into orbit, Jing Haipeng and Chen Dong were going to conduct a series of experiments, including testing the latest in China's advanced life support systems, as well as scientific research.Wu Ping, deputy director of China's Manned Space Program, explains the role of the two astronauts in space. “During their mission, the two are essentially backups to oneanother. They are both capable of piloting the spacecraft, complex management, manual docking as well as handling any emergency situations or malfunctions (故障). While in orbit, they are going to complete a number of maneuvers (演习) with Shenzhou11, as well as orbital experiments, demonstrations and tests on human health in space.”本文是一篇新闻报道,报道了神州十一号太空飞船成功将50岁的景海鹏和37岁的陈冬两位宇航员送入太空。
备战2020年高考英语一轮精品复习Unit4 Astronomy:the science of the stars练习
必修三Unit 4 Astronomy: the science of the stars练习Ⅰ.阅读理解AThere are strong arguments on space travel, and below you will find a list of many frequently used arguments.Pros of space travel:—Space travel has inspired many people to continue improving technology such as inventing Velcro and non-stick frying pans.—If you look at the total GDP worldwide, space only accounts for a very small percentage of the total budget.—Better to spend money on our future, than on other projects that would have a much lower potential reward.—If we were to colonize (开拓……成殖民地) another planet, it would reduce the population on Earth, which is already overpopulated. This will result in the survival of our species when our planet can no longer support human life.—Multinational space stations have helped diplomacy (外交) among multiple nations.Cons of space travel:—There is a very large percentage of the earth's oceans we have yet to explore. We should continue exploring the remaining unknown regions of our oceans before continuing to another planet.—The funding for space exploration comes from the tax payers' pockets. Many do not think that they should be forced into paying for something they oppose.—The total contribution from space travel is minimal, when considering the total cost.—We should not be thinking about colonizing the moon, or a planet. It's better to save our existing planet first. If we are to destroy one planet, what is to stop us from repeating the mistakes on another planet.—Not only is the cost of manned space missions high, but space travel can have a serious effect on the human body over an extended period of time. The only way to solve it is by using robots, which reduces the human risk factor, and reduces the overall cost.Overall, most people approve of (赞成) our current exploration methods. In my opinion, these methods should be reviewed to help reduce the cost of launches. I believe the potential of finding resources on other planets will make the cost of several decades of space exploration worthwhile.语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文。

课时提能练(十四)Ⅰ.阅读理解(2019·长沙测评)Scientists found gravitational waves as they watched the effects of two black holes running into each other and forming a much bigger one,a century after Albert Einstein predicted that such an event would send ripples(波纹) through space-time.Scientists“heard”the wave with the help of laser beams(激光束) sent through two pipes which form an angle of 90° between each other and are nearly 2,000 miles apart in the US.That equipment let them glimpse the nature of black holes.Together they made up the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory(LIGO).Gravitational waves were first observed in September 2015 and the second detection(发现) occurred three months later. The third detection, which the astronomers calledGW170104,was made on January 4,2017.The astronomers believed their latestfinding“provides clues about the directions in which the black holes are spinning”.“Black holes are beautifully simple. You just need two numbers to describe them completely:mass, how much they bend space-time,and a spin, how much space-time moves about them,”said Dr. Christopher Berry of the University of Birmingham, one of the researchers in the project.“But it takes lots of hard work to measure these from our data.We now have wonderful mass measurements, and are starting to uncover details about the spins of these black holes, which could give evidence for how they formed.”The researchers said their discovery added further evidence to support Einstein's general theory of relativity and confirmed the existence of previously unknown black holes.More than 1,000 scientists from the LIGO Scientific Collaboration were involved in the project along with an additional 280 researchers from the European-based Virgo Collaboration.Scientists hope gravitational waves will offer a completely different view of the universe, allowing them to study events that might be hidden from traditional telescopes.“We have further confirmation of the existence of stellar(恒星的)-mass black holes that are larger than 20 solar masses. We didn't know they existed before LIGO detected them,”MIT researcher David Shoemaker said.【语篇解读】本文是一篇科普说明文。

So when her teacher Andrea Smeeton received information about the national challenge, Smeeton said she immediately had one student in mind.“I knew she would love the challenge and that she would go way beyond in her search,” Smeeton said. “She immediately started researching bone density(密度) of astronauts and how to have food on Mars.”“My design will ensure the safety of the astronauts but also make sure their comfort is out of this world,” Dobek says.Dobek's design calls for building the MSS or Mars Storage Station to put the supplies in. It also includes the SGF or SelfGrowing Farm, and she details how it would work with the elements on Mars. Then there is physical and leisure activity for the astronauts under Dobek's design. A simulator (模拟装置) allows astronauts to choose their exercise machine and virtual reality environment. Rooms have circular ceilings so astronauts will be able to watch downloaded shows and even see places on Earth, such as their homes.“I want to tell other kids to follow their passions,” Dobek said. “Whatever they want to do, they should push for it and always try their best.”【语篇解读】本文主要介绍了小学生Emilia Dobek设计太空站,并赢得挑战的相关内容。
