Unit 3 Sports Day
Task objectives
Understand a series of instructions and act accordingly
Interact with others by using simple expressions and structures learned

What can you do? I can throw a ball.
What’s Tim going to do? He’s going to do the long jump.
Is Kim going to throw a ball? Yes, she is. / No, she isn’t.
The first period
A. It’s Sports Day soon. Mr Li, the PE teacher, is talking to the students. Listen, look and say. Presentation
1.Tell the pupils It’s Sports Day soon. Ask them What can you do at Sports Day? Demonstrate
some of the activities and ask the pupils to recall vocabulary they know for the actions, e.g.
run, jump, etc.
2.Demonstrate new items of vocabulary and write the names of the activities on the board.
Ask the pupils to stand up and do the actions when I point to one of the words/phrases on

3.Point to activities on the board and ask the pupils What can you do? Encourage them to
reply I can …
4.Show Transparency. Play the tape and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat
after the cassette.
Practice
1.Read the speech bubbles of the people on the page and ask the pupils to repeat them after
me.
2.Point to the other children on the page and ask the pupils what they can do as shown in the
thought bubbles.
3.Tell the pupils to work in pairs and role-play the PE teacher and the children. They exchange
roles after each child’s answer. Monitor to check that the pupils are making correct sentences.
4.Check the answers with the whole class.
Play a guessing game
Ask individual pupils to choose and mime one of the activities. The other pupils have to guess the activity.

The second period
Revision
What can you do?

B1. The principal is talking to Miss Li. Listen, say and act.
Presentation
Ask the pupils to tell me what lesson they are going to have next. Revise going to by asking the pupils about their plans for the evening or the weekend.
Practice
1.Show Transparency. Play the tape. Explain that the principal and the teacher are planning a
Sports Day.
2.Read the conversation and ask the class to read it after me. Practise the falling intonation for
the question What’s Bob going to do?
3.Divide the class into two large groups and ask them to role-play the principal and Miss Li,
asking and answering questions about the other children in the picture.
B2. The students are making a programme for the Sports Day. Listen, say and act.
Presentation
1.Before class, ask a few pupils to tell me what they are going to do at Sports Day. Make notes
and bring them to class.
2.Write the names of the pupils I talked to on the board. Next to the names write the activities
they have said they’re going to do. Ask them questions using the wrong activity, e.g. Are you goi ng to …? When the pupils answer No, I’m not, ask them What are you going to do?
Encourage them to answer I’m going to …
ing the list, ask the class a mixture of correct and incorrect questions about what the
pupils are going to do, e.g. Is he/she going t o …? When the pupils answer No, ask them What is he/she going to do?
Practice
1.Show Transparency. Point to the programme of what the children are going to do on Sports
Day. Ask the pupils to tell me the names of the activities pictured on the programme.
2.Play the tape and ask the pupils to repeat the sentences after the tape.
3.Ask the pupils to listen to the conversation once more.
4.Make sure that the pupils know which names are female and which names are male on the
list. Tell the pupils to work in pairs and to ask and answer questions about the other children.
