About the Newspaper
How To Reada Newspaper如何阅读报刊
How to Read a NewspaperBy Walter CronkiteInternational Paper asked Walter Cronkite, for years television’s foremost news anchorman, and an ardent advocate of the need for a free people to remain free by keeping fully informed, to tell you how your newspaper can help you cope better with your world each day.If you’re like most people you try to keep up with the news by watching it on television. That’s how 65% of us get 100% of our news – from the24-odd-minute TV news broadcast each evening. The problem – and I know the frustration of it firsthand – is that unless something really special happens, we in TV news have to put severe time limitations on every story, even the most complicated and important ones.Get more than headlinesSo what we bring you is primarily a front-page headline service. To get all you need to know, you have to flesh out those headlines with a complete account of the news from a well edited and thorough newspaper. Is it really necessary to getthe whole story? DorothyGreene Friendly put it this way:“What the American peopledon’t know can kill them.”Amen.News people have aresponsibility. And so do you.Ours is to report the news fairly, accurately and completely.Yours is to keep yourselfinformed everyday.I’l l never forget thequotation hanging in Edward R.Murrow’s CBS office. It wasfrom Thoreau: “It takes two tospeak the truth – one to speakand one to hear.”Take a three-minute overviewHere’s how I tackle thepaper. For starters, I take athree-minute overview of thenews. No need to go to thesports section first, or the TVlistings. With my overviewyou’ll get there quickly enough.First I scan through the front-page headlines, look at thepictures and read the captions. Ido the same thing page by pagefront to back. Only then do I goback for the whole feast. The way the front page is“made up” tells you plenty. Forone thing, headline type sizewill tell you how the paper’seditor ranks the stories onrelative importance. A majorcrop failure in Russia should getlarger type than an overturnedtruck of wheat on the Interstate, for example.Which is the main story? You’ll find the main or leadstory in the farthest upper-righthand column. Why? Tradition.Newspapers used to appear onnewsstands folded anddisplayed with their top right-hand quarter showing. Theymade up the front page with thelead story there to entice readers. You’ll find the second mostimportant story at the top far left, unless it’s related to the leadstory. Do you have to read allthe stories in the paper? Gosh,no. But you check them all.Maybe the one that appears atfirst to be the least appealingwill be the one that will mosteffect your life.News is information, periodA good newspaper providefour basic ingredients to helpyou wrap your mind around thenews: information, background, analysis and interpretation.Rule #1 of Americanjournalism is: “News columnsare reserved only for news.”What is news? It is informationonly. You can tell a goodnewspaper story. It just reportsthe news. It doesn’t try to slantit. And it gives you both sidesof the story.Look out for a lot ofadjectives and adverbs. Theydon’t belong in an objectivenews story. They tend to colorand slant it so you may come toa wrong conclusion.Do look for bylines, datelines and the news servicesources of articles. These willalso help you judge a story’simportance and its facts. As you read a story you canweigh its truthfulness by askingyourself, “Who said so?” Lookout for “facts” that come fromunnamed sources, such as “a highly placed government official.” This could top you off that the story is not quite true, or that someone – usually in Washington – is sending up a “trial balloon” to see if something that may happen or be proposed gets a good reception.Another tip: check for “Corrections” items. A good newspaper will straighten out false or wrong information as soon as it discovers its error. A less conscientious one will let it slide or bury it.An Upside Down PyramidReporters write news stories in a special way called the “invertedpyramid” style. That means theystart with the end,the climax of thestory, with themost importantfacts first, thenbuilding moredetails in order of importance. Thisis unlike thetelling or writingof most stories, where you usuallystart at the beginning and save the climax for last. Knowing about the newspaper’s “inverted pyramid” style will help you sift facts.A well-reported story will tell you “who”, “what,” “when,” “where,” and “how.” The best newspapers will go on to tell you “why.” “Why” is often missing. And that may be the key ingredient. Many important stories are flanked by “sidebars.” These are supporting stories that offer, not news, but the “why” –background and analysis– tohelp you understand andevaluate it.Background offers helpfulfacts. Analysis frequentlyincludes opinion. So it shouldbe – and usually is – carefullylabeled as such. It’s generallyby-lined by an expert on thesubject who explains the causesof the news and its possibleconsequences to you.No good newspaper will mixinterpretation with the “hard”news, either. Interpretationgoes beyond analysis and tellsyou not just what will probablyhappen, but what ought tohappen. This should be clearlylabeled, or at best, reserved forthe editorial pageor “op-ed”(opposite theeditorial) page.Form your ownopinion firstI form myown opinionbefore I turn tothe editorial pagefor the pundits’views. I don’twant them to tellme how to think until I’vewrestled the issue through to myown conclusion. Once I have,I’m open to other reasoning.Resist the temptation to let themdo your thinking for you. Here’s an idea I firmlybelieve in and act on. Whenyou read something thatmotivates you, do somethingabout it. Learn more about it.Join a cause. Write a letter. You can constantly vote onissues by writing letters, particularly to yourcongressman or state or localrepresentative. To understand the newsbetter, you can also read newsmagazines. Books help to fill inthe holes too. During theVietnam war, for example, many people felt that the dailynews wasn’t entirelysatisfactory. The truth is, youcould have gotten manyimportant new facts from thebooks coming out at the time.Pick a TV story and follow itNow that I’ve taught youthe basics of getting under theskin of a newspaper, letnewspapers get under your skin.Tonight, pick an importantstory that interests you on theTV news. Dig into the story –in your newspaper. Follow it,and continue to follow it closelyin print. See if you don’t findyourself with far moreunderstanding of the event. And see if you don’t have afar more sensible opinion as tothe “whys” and “wherefores” ofthat event, even down to how itwill effect you – and maybeeven what should be doneabout it.Keep up with the news theway my colleagues and I do –on TV and in the newspapers.Learn to sift it for yourself, toheft it, to value it, to question it,to ask for it all. You’ll be inbetter control of your life andyour fortunes. And that’s the way it is.Walter Cronkite。

上外中级口译第三版听力教程原文及讲解--Unit 10
Unit ten. Part one. We are surrounded by news. 2. Exercises.1. This is a talk about the work of a journalist. Listen and supply the missing words you hear from the talk.Nowadays more than ever before we are surrounded by news. You can get the news on radio, on television, in newspapers, and on the internet. In fact so many new stories appear everyday that is impossible to keep up with them. And behind all of these stories there is a journalist. First of all there are different kinds of journalists like entertainment journalists, sports journalists, and crime journalists. And they all work hard to deliver the news 24 hours a day. So how exactly do they find and write stories? Let’s look at the work of one type of journalist, a city reporter. Sometimes journalists are called reporters because they report the news. So a city reporter is a person assigned to find and write stories about local news. How does the reporter do her work? Well, to begin with she should be in contact with lots of different organizations, the local police, and fire apartments, the offices of local politicians, and religious and civic organizations in the neighborhood. Once the reporter had a good relationship wi th these organizations she can call them to see what’s happening or they might call her to tell her about something that’s going on. There are two kinds of story she could write about. The first is a planned event for which the reporter can anticipate many of the details. For example, a politician could be opening a new department store. The second is an unplanned event. For example, a fire or a crime. Usually unplanned events are more exciting.2. Listen to a talk about the types of news and then provide the missing information in the spaces given below.Let’s look at one kind of unplanned event, a crime. Imagine that a fight breaks up between 4 men in a neighborhood bar, and one of the men threatens another with a knife. The reporter will probably see a few lines about the crime in the police log. When she knows what happened she can go to the scene of the crime and interview people. The first person she will want to interview is a police officer. So that she can get the facts. There are four very important facts that every reader wants to know at the beginning of every story. One, what happened? Two, when did it happen? Three, where did it happen? And four, who was involved? Once the reporter has the basic facts of the story she can begin to interviewwit nesses. When you are interviewing witnesses it’s very important to get each witnesses full name and some other details, perhaps the person’s job or age. These details will make the story more interesting and credible. However, it’s important not to report too much personal information or anything that is scandaless. When the reporter has finished interviewing people she will go back to the news room and write the story. At that point she might talk to her editor to decide whether she has a good story. Together the reporter and editor must decide whether the reporter has enough facts and material to make a good story. Is it clear what happened and why?Part 2. Statements. 2. Exercises. Listen and then choose the answer that is closest in meaning to each statement you hear.1. In spite of the repeated complaints lodged by the local residents the noise of the construction site disturbed the people in the neighbor-hood.2. Charles is going to France for a short stay. In order to reduce the travelling expenses he paid for the airplane tickets 2 months in advance.3. It was Christmas and most people stayed in for family reunion. There was little traffic. So Mary got home in half the usual time.4. Peter often has a lot of good ideas and starts to implement them but he rarely follows them through to completion.5. We went down town last weekend and attended a concert. The foreign orchestra performed well at the concert and got a good review in the newspaper.Part three. 3. Exercises. 1. I’d like to get your opinion about the news. This is a short conversation about the news in a newspaper. Listen and choose the best answer to each question you hear.1. I’d like to get your opinion about the news.W: Hi, Brown, I’d like to get your opinion about the news.M: OK. Well, I get most of my news on the internet. But I read papers too.W: And what do you think about the news in the newspaper?M: What I noticed about the papers is that the news is really depressing, especially the main stories. You have bombings, and accidents, and people killing people. I find more and more that the news in the United States i s getting focused on negative things. It’s always a disasterof some sort.W: So you think it’s very negative.M: Yeah. And there is something else. I’d like to read about international news. But it seems that people hear aren’t really that interested in it. I read somewhere I can’t remember that it is a prestige thing to cover the international news.W: And you don’t think people in the United States like the international news.M: No, I don’t. But because I have lived in so many countries around the w orld I am interested in international news. The news in Korea is from everywhere, the United States, Europe, Japan, China. Anyway what I like about newspapers are the arts and cultural sections, and the human interests stories which can be really up-liftin g. I’d like to read about people. For example, there was a story about some crime in the park, but now they are examining that case again. And it turns out that the five young people who they thought did it might be innocent actually. It was shocking that the judicial system had failed in the beginning. But I am glad they finally found out that those young people were innocent.W: So you liked that story.M: Yeah, I mean that kind of news. People could actually read it and feel positive like you could really improve the system or whatever compared to the news that is depressing. You feel helpless. You can’t do anything about it.Questions:1) What’s Brown’s opinion about the news in the newspaper?2) What type of news does Brown like to read about?3) Why is he interested in international news?4) Brown likes several sections in newspapers. Which of the following is not one of those sections?5) Which of the following statements is true about Brown?2. How do you become a foreign correspondent? Listen to the interview with a journalist and then choose the best answer to each question you hear.W: How do become a foreign correspondent?M: Usually you have to start at the beginning. That is you have to begin as a journalist of some sort on a local newspaper, a local radio station, maybe on this small magazine workyou way up. Now there aren't that many organizations which have large numbers of foreign correspondents. So you also have to sort of work with that aim in mind. Another way of doing it is to work abroad and work as a free-lance what we call a stringer, that’s somebody who sells stories and gets paid by the price to newspapers and magazines, and so on, and hoping to build up a reputation that way, and eventually to be offered a full time job. And that sometimes works. But I think to be honest, most people just drift into being foreign correspondents.W: What qualifications do you need? For example, a degree?M: I don’t really know what qualifications as such. I mean obviously a degree in moder n languages or political science or economics would be very useful. But a degree in itself probably won’t be enough to make an editor to decide to send you abroad. So it’s difficult to define precise qualities. You are going to need stamina, and ability to assimilate information quickly and accurately, and then produce stories which fit the style of the newspaper or radio or television station you work for. But there is no list of qualifications that an editor is going to be looking for when he is trying to appoint a new correspondent to a particular place. And so it often becomes a fairly personal choice I think.Questions:1) What’s the interview mainly about?2) According to the interview if you want to become a foreign correspondent you have to do something as a start. Which of the following is not one of these things mentioned in the interview?3) According to the interview what qualifications are needed for being a foreign correspondent?4) Which of the following statements is true when an editor is trying to appoint a foreign correspondent?中级口译听力教程第三版5AAn intermediate course of English listening. Third edition.Unit 10. Part 3. 3. Advertising is part of our daily lives. Listen to a passage about advertising and then provide the missing information in the spaces given below.Advertising is part of our daily lives. To realize this fact you have only to live through themagazine or newspaper, or count the radio or television commercials that you hear in one evening. Most people see and hear several hundred advertizing messages everyday. And people respond to the many devices that advertisers use to gain their attention. Advertizing is a big business, and to many people a fascinating business filled with attraction and excitement. It is part literature, part art, and part show business. Advertizing is the difficult business of bringing information to great numbers of people. The purpose of an advertisement is to make people respond. To make them react to an idea, such as helping prevent forest fires, or to make them want to buy a certain product or service. At the beginning of the 20th century, advertizing was described as salesmanship imprint. If this definition work expanded to include radio and television, it would still stand today. The most effective way to sell something is through person to person contact. But the cost of person to person selling is high, because it takes a great deal of time. It increases the cost of the product or service. Advertising distributes the selling message to many people at one time. The first printed advertisement in the English language appeared in 1478. This early ad was the work of England’s first printer. He used it to advertize religious books from his own workshop. He posted small printed notices along London’s main streets. Besides advertising his product he identified his shop with a red stripe shield so that customers could find it easily.Part four. Listening and translation. 2. Exercises.1. Sentence translation. Listen and translate each sentence you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below.1) Shirley, the best course of action would be to consult your lawyer before you sign the contract. Anyway, this is a big contract, and it is vital for your company.2) We can definitely assum e that this year’s show has been a huge success for the exhibitors, and that the fare has given the economy a significant impulse.3) I have certain reservations about setting up a branch in that area. It may be very difficult to expand into the market there.4) People have grown accustomed in recent years to higher and higher rates of inflation though sometimes they still make complaints.5) The success of any retail store depends largely on its sales workers. Courteous and efficient service from behind the counter does much to build up the store’s reputation.2. Passage translation. Listen and translate each passage you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below. You may take notes while you are listening.1) My car is always breaking down. I have so much trouble with it. I wish there were some kind of device that would monitor the different parts of your car. You know, some kind of machine that will tell you when the engine is not working well or there are any problems of the brak es. That way I wouldn’t have to worry about my car. I could just take it to the garage right away and get it fixed.2) In this talk I would like to deal with the sources of the strength of the trade union movements in Britain. Trade unions in Britain are generally believed nowadays to be in a position of great political strength. What is this strength based on? I also appreciate the fact that newspapers often have in-depth articles on topics that are not covered as extensively on television or online.Another thing I like about newspapers is that they area great way to stay informed about local news and events. For example, my local newspaper has a section dedicated to community events, such as festivals and concerts, which I find very helpful. I also like reading about local politics and issues that affect my community. In addition to providing information, newspapers canalso be entertaining. I enjoy reading the comics andpuzzles in the newspaper, and I know many people who look forward to reading the horoscopes every day. Overall, I believe that newspapers are an important part of oursociety and will continue to be so for many years to come.中文:报纸是全球人民获取信息的重要来源。

高二英语Unit4Newspaper知识精讲人教版一. 本周教学内容:Unit 4 Newspaper二. 重点、难点:BackgroundProducing a NewspaperThis piece of work is about producing a newspaper . There are two main tasks :Writing the news storiesLaying out the newspaperWriting the storiesThis is the job a reporter on a newspaper would do . The actual information for the stories has been provided for you . When a reporter interviews someone , they can either take notes , or they might use a small tape - recorder to record the interview . You have these tape recordings written out for you . (This is called a transcription) .Laying out the newspaperThis task is done by a number of people in the newspaper . The reporter produces the actual text of the story . The editor (or one of the sub - editors) then decides how important the story is . If it’s a really important story , it goes on the front page . If it’s not quite so important , it goes on one of the inside pages . So one of your jobs will be to decide which of the stories you are going to use , and where they will go in your paper .The other main job is to make all the stories fit on the page . The editor partly does this , by reading through the draft copy of each story , and cutting out stuff that isn’t needed , (or morelike ly telling the reporter to do this !) . Then it’s up to the page designer to use the computer software to make the headlines , stories and possibly pictures or graphics fit on to the page . So at different stages in the work , you are reporter , editor and page designer , (and possibly all three at the same time !) .Functional sentencesAre you / Will you be free then ? Yes , I’ll be free . I’d like to go .Let’s go together then . I’ll meet you at the theatre at six - thirty .Good ! See you then .What time shall we meet ? Where is the best place to meet ?What about meeting outside……? I suggest…….Language points1. 据说他们都很棒。

报纸格式英文作文
报纸格式英文作文英文:Newspaper Format。
As a reader, I find that the format of a newspaper is very important. It affects how easy it is to read and understand the information presented. In my opinion, a good newspaper format should have clear headings and subheadings, a logical flow of information, and a good balance between text and images.Firstly, headings and subheadings should be clear and concise. They should give readers an idea of what thearticle is about and help them navigate through the newspaper. For example, a heading like "Local News" is too broad, while "City Council Approves New Traffic Plan" is more specific and informative.Secondly, the flow of information should be logical.Articles should be arranged in a way that makes sense and allows readers to follow the story easily. For example, if an article is about a new city park, it should start with an introduction about the park, followed by details about its features and amenities, and end with information about the park's opening date.Lastly, a good balance between text and images is important. Too much text can be overwhelming and make readers lose interest, while too many images can be distracting and take away from the content. A good mix of both can make the newspaper more engaging and visually appealing.中文:报纸格式。
