The coast of Otago on the South Island of New Zealand is known for a strange and still unexplained natural wonder—the amazing Moeraki Boulders. These are giant rocks, and perfectly round boulders ,seemingly washed up on a beach. They are sitting mysteriously on the beach. Each boulder weighs several tonnes and is up to two metres high. Some of the boulders are ingroups, while the others stand by themselves. The boulders contain mud and clay, which are held together by calcite1. However, how they got here is not fully understood. Scientists explain that the boulders formed deep at the bottom of the sea about 65 million years ago. For millions of years, the boulders lay buried underground, covered up over time. Slowly, waves, winds and rains were digging them up one by one. As the sand that surrounds them erodes2,they seem to rise to the surface as if pushed up from the center of the Earth. Thanks to centuries of erosion, we see the mysterious round stones along the beach today.

What can be the best title for the passage?A.Animal population increases VS mass extinctionB.The beautiful Ugandan national parksC.The life of the okapi before and after disappearingD.The extinction of the world’s mammalsBYou can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created Lampbrella,a lamp post with its own rainsensing umbrella. The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia.“Once,I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain.I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬)built into a street lamp,” he said. The Lampbrella is a standardlooking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a builtin electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand.Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360°motion sensor on thefiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed,so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians.Besides,it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people.Being installed(安装) at 2 metres off the ground,it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production,Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.5.For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?A.To predict a heavy rain.B.To check the weather forecast.C.To protect people from the rain.D.To remind people to take an umbrella.6.What do we know from Belyaev’s words in Paragraph 2?A.His creation was inspired by an experience.B.It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.C.Street lamps are protected by canopies.D.He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.7.Which of the following shows how the Lampbrella works?A.motor→canopy→sensorsB.sensors→motor→canopyC.motor→sensors→canopyD.canopy→motor→sensors8.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The designer will open a company to promote his product.B.The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.C.The designer is confident that his creation is practical.D.The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow答案基础落实Ⅰ.1.B 2.A 3.A 4.CⅡ.1.sightings 2.mysterious 3.claimed 4.surface 5.dived 6.appeared7.calm 8.sceptical 9.unlikely 10.creaturesⅢ.1.to 2.of 3.in 4.away 5.of能力提升1.D2.B3.C4.A5.C6.A7.B8.C。

这种想法是大错而特错的,作者告诫我们:幸福就在眼前,我们应该活在当下。
1.A.plan B.choiceC.method D.truth解析:选D The truth is ...意为“真相/事实是……”第一段作者介绍了我们生活中的一种观念误区,第二段给我们揭示了真相和事实,故选择D项。
2.A.rich B.luckyC.active D.happy解析:选D 根据倒数第三段段末 ... to be happy可知,此处应选D项。
3.A.challenges B.chancesC.dreams D.answers解析:选A 第三段承接上文论述了我们的生活中充满了障碍,故A项challenges一词符合语境。
4.A.refuse B.decideC.wait D.expect解析:选B 上文提到生活中充满挑战,所以作者奉劝我们,无论如何,我们都要“下决心”(decide)去快乐生活。
5.A.similar B.regularC.favourite D.potential解析:选C 根据语录和作者的观点一致可知,这是作者“最喜欢”(favourite)的一句语录,故选择C项。
6.A.begin B.finishC.change D.come解析:选A 根据本段末尾“life would begin”的提示可知,Alfred D'Souza总是认为生活即将“开始”(begin),这表明他总是将幸福的实现寄托于未来。
7.A.in B.byC.off D.at解析:选A “in the way”在此是一个固定短语,表示“阻挡”之意,符合语境。
8.A.set up B.got throughC.turned down D.made out解析:选B get through意为“完成;度过”,前面提到“障碍”,这里接着说我们总是有一些事先要去“克服”。
符合语境。
9.A.Instead B.MeanwhileC.Then D.Otherwise解析:选C 上文的关键词“first”和下文的“at last”提示此处应是顺承关系,故选C项。
Alfred D'Souza认为,等他完成了以上的那些事情,“然后”(then)他的生活就开始了。
10.A.experiences B.opportunitiesC.failures D.obstacles解析:选D 最终,Alfred D'Souza意识到:这些“障碍”正是他生活的组成部分。
这里的obstacles与前面提到的“障碍”相呼应。
11.A.time B.wayC.place D.excuse解析:选B 根据下句“Happiness is the way”可知,此处应该填入way一词。

Ⅱ.阅读理解Of the thousands of different kinds of animals thatexist in the world man has learned to make friends with anenormous number. Some are pets, offering him companionship;some give protection, and some do hard work which man cannotdo for himself. Others, unfortunately, are kept as food. Dogs, which serve man in all four capacities (Korea and China are big dog eaters), are found in various breeds (品种) in all countries of the world. The Husky can live in the cold polar regions, and the Saluki is at home in the hottest parts of Central Africa. The inhabitants of certain countries are dependent for their very lives on the camel. In the West Indies the little donkey, strong and surefooted, carrying heavy loads even in mountainous places, is a familiar sight.Trained and tamed for many generations, domestic animals are not accustomed to roaming in search of food and shelter. They look to their masters to provide for their needs, and as long as these are supplied, they are content to do what their masters require. All domestic animals need proper food. It must be suitable for them, sufficient in quantity, fresh and clean. Some people feed a pet dog or cat on leftover food, and then wonder why the animal seems listless (倦怠的) and dull. The quantity of food depends on the size of the animal and the amount of exercise it takes. Overfeeding is as bad as underfeeding. Containers for food and water must be washed regularly if the animal is to maintain good health.Even wellcaredfor animals may sometimes fall ill. If this happens, the wise master seeks the best advice he can get. All sorts of medicines and treatments are available for sick animals, and in some countries organizations exist toprovide them free or at a cheap price. Useful, friendly and hardworking animals deserve to have some time, money and attention spent on their health.语篇解读:在大千世界中,动物与人类的生活息息相关。
