This essay will review the processes of this module and try to find some approaches to developing my academic writing skills.As a foundation subject of the LLM, I thought academic writing aims to tell us how to write a LLM essay. Therefore, I really expected to learn the processes and skills to write a prefect essay. I wanted to learn how to “choose a question and conduct my research”1, in addition, I hoped to learn how to find the primary sources and secondary sources. What`s more, for me, the most important expectation is how to meet readers` requirements. Actually, I indeed learned a lot of knowledge from this module. For instance, according to “the practical session in one of the Library`s IT training suites”2, I learned how to search primary sources and secondary sources on the internet. After I finished the internet for law online tutorial, I had a general idea of the methods of searching useful sources.In my opinion, one of the most significant issues is how to select relevant and reliable sources and to use in a LLM essay. Fortunately, I got the useful knowledge from this process. Previously, I always tried to read everything which included much irrelevant and useless information and it took me a lot of time. During learning this module I tried to find an approach of solving this problem. As the handbook of this module points out, “Once you are aware of the sources of information relevant to your assignment, you should be reading them selectively and with purpose.”3Having learned this approach, I thought when I read sources; I needed to have a purpose and direction. Also, I should made notes on the materials, and thought about the information in a critical way. For example, when I wrote my formative essay which is named “Discuss the relevance of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for regulating states` trading relations in the 21st Century”4, I tried to read the information about the WTO, once I read the sources of information relevant the effects of the WTO on international trades, I wrote them down and began to critical thinking. However, it is hard for me to write down all the relevant materials. So, in future, I will train myself to get most relevant and reliable sources in a short time.For me, the most important thing about reading and writing is critique. In simple terms, critical reading and writing are the most vital aspects when you write an academic essay. Initially, I did not think that critical reading was helpful to writing an academic essay, because I felt we only needed to read the sources and knew the information. However, a ccording to Mike and Alison, “[A] key critical reading skill is that of identifying authors` underlying aims and agendas, so that you can take them into account in your evaluation of the text in hand.”5After I read this sentence, I though the purpose of critical reading is to find the values and aims of authors` to support the evaluation in our critical writing. I tried to use this in my formative essay. Many times, I referred to authors` perspectives to support my own evaluation. But sometimes I realized that I just copied other people`s opinion. Although I have learned about critical reading, I am not yet confident about critique. So, I intend to do more research to learn how to read and write critically.Plagiarism is forbidden in any writing, in particular academic writing. I think why some paper are considered plagiarism is that the authors do not know the University`s plagiarism rules. At first, I thought plagiarism is that copy other people`s words directly. Subsequently, after I completed the online tutorial, I noticed that the University`s plagiarism was quite different from what I thought. To be specific, I thought there was no need to make references when “discussed the ideas or research of another person in your own words”6and “paraphrased the ideas from two separate sources linking them together using your own words”7. However, having learned the plagiarism rules I knew that all of above-mentioned sentences need to be referenced. Also, I learned the differences between quotations and citations. But, sometimes I still wondered whether the ideas need to be referenced or not. For instance, when I read a book, and I got some enlightenment from author`s idea, but actually it was similar with author`s perspective. I really doubted that whether it need a reference of not. So, as a next step, I will read more relevant sources to find the accurate answer.In my opinion, the most important aspect that examiners are looking for when marking an essay is cri tique. Previously, I have learned the “Appendix two: Assessmen t Criteria for Postgraduate Work”8and “Appendix three: Standard Feedback Sheer for LLM Assignments”9, but I still could not understand the criteria clearly. So, I read the specimen assignments in Appendix five to look for the clearer explanation and asked my Autonomous Learning Groups members for help. After we talked about it, I think the most significant aspect which examiners seek for is evaluation. Evaluation is the most vital thing in a legal academic writing. We need to analyse the ideas logically, and then utilize the ideas to support our own perspectives.I tried to use this in my formative essay. For example, when I read “While customs duties are, in principle, not prohibited, quantitative restrictions on trade in goods are, as a general rule, for bidden”10,I utilized it in my formative essay to support my opinion that the aim of all the rules on market access is to improve the trade between different countries by reducing the customs duties and limiting the quantity of products. Although, I am not sure that if my evolution is correct or not, I think by learning this module I can try to make an evaluation. And what I need to do next is to do more practice.I hoped I could get a good mark for critique in my formative essay, but it was only mark “Satisfactory”. This might be due to lack of personal engagement with available sources. At first, I really did not know what the question meant. I could not understand the question clearly. Then I did much research, I asked my group members for help. At last, I understood the question and try my best to identify the issues which were raised by the question. Although I am not yet confident about this aspect, I know I can do it well in next essay.In conclusion, I think I really enjoy the process of this module. Based on my experiences of learning this module, I think I can do better in writing a LLM essay. What`s more, during self-regulated learning, I also learned how to critical reading and critical thinking. Although there are still some questions about how to write a LLM essay, I think I have learned a lot about the knowledge form this module. As a next step, I plan to do more practice. Actually, at the beginning, I was hesitated to take this course concerning writing. Afterwards, I found it useful and not so difficult as my imagination therefore I made up my mind to learn it. I viewed it as a challenge to myself.During the course study, not only did I acquire the knowledge about academic writing, my horizon was also broadened for being exposed to some specific situations. This reflective journal contains my reactions and feelings, including both bad and good aspects of the experience, as well as the conclusion from these experiences. In the end, I am going to come up with my personal action plans such as how to put what I have learnt into practice and what I will do differently in this type of situation next time.Looking back to the whole term, my deepest impressions of this course is informative. It seemed as an easy work to finish but the truth is that it really tested my carefulness.Every coin has two sides, and the course is of no exception. Academic writing, just shown like its name, lays stress on contents of academy, far away our daily life. As a result, this course was not so interesting and attractive. Also, the knowledge I acquired in class can hardly be used in other situations. It is limited to the specific situation like writing academic papers. On the other hand, although the course gave us many chances to speak, the students didn’t cherish them. The atmosphere of the class was not lively but a little depressing, so I was worried about speaking in front of others. What`s more, for me, the most important expectation is how to meet readers` requirements. Actually, I indeed learned a lot of knowledge from this module. For instance, according to “the practical session in one of the Library`s IT training suit es”2, I learned how to search primary sources and secondary sources on the internet. After I finished the internet for law online tutorial, I had a general idea of the methods of searching useful sources.In my opinion, one of the most significant issues is how to select relevant and reliable sources and to use in a LLM essay. Fortunately, I got the useful knowledge from this process. Previously, I always tried to read everything which included much irrelevant and useless information and it took me a lot of time. During learning this module I tried to find an approach of solvingthis problem. As the handbook of this module points out, “Once you are aware of the sources of information relevant to your assignment, you should be reading them selectively and with purpose.”3Having learned this approach, I thought when I read sources; I needed to have a purpose and direction. Also, I should made notes on the materials, and thought about the information in a critical way. For example, when I wrote my formative essay which is named “Discuss the relevance of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for regulating states` trading relations in the 21st Century”4, I tried to read the information about the WTO, once I read the sources of information relevant the effects of the WTO on international trades, I wrote them down and began to critical thinking. However, it is hard for me to write down all the relevant materials. Although I have learned about critical reading, I am not yet confident about critique. So, I intend to do more research to learn how to read and write critically.Plagiarism is forbidden in any writing, in particular academic writing. I think why some paper are considered plagiarism is that the authors do not know the University`s plagiarism rules. At first, I thought plagiarism is that copy other people`s words directly. Subsequently, after I completed the online tutorial, I noticed that the University`s plagiarism was quite different from what I thought. To be specific, I thought there was no need to make references when “discussed the ideas or research of another person in your own words”6and “paraphrased th e ideas from two separate sources linking them together using your own words”7. However, having learned the plagiarism rules I knew that all of above-mentioned sentences need to be referenced. At first, I really did not know what the question meant. I could not understand the question clearly. Then I did much research, I asked my group members for help. At last, I understood the question and try my best to identify the issues which were raised by the question. Although I am not yet confident about this aspect, I know I can do it well in next essay.In conclusion, I think I really enjoy the process of this module. Based on my experiences of learning this module, I think I can do better in writing a LLM essay. What`s more, during self-regulated learning, I also learned how to critical reading and critical thinking. Your journal should be a reflective document that provides personal, thoughtful analysis of your individual participation/progress on the group project, and your assessment of the group interactions that may have occurred during the week.Why keep a journal? Of course, one of the reasons is that it is a course requirement! However, more importantly, we know that the personal reflection and self-appraisal that is part of “journaling” will help you articulate what you learned as a leadership major and why you do the things you do—we call this “deep learning” since it comes about through your own self-analysis, rather than through lectures, memorization, or “book learning.” This thoughtful introspection can help you tell a potential employer, or a graduate school admissions officer, who you are and what talents and interests you possess.What “products” are required?You will submit weekly journal entries. At the end of the semester, you will also submit your full, aggregated collection of entries so that your “final” journal covers the entire semester. Your full collection may be comprised of your original entries, or you may choose to revise some or all of them based upon feedback from the instructor. More details are found later in this document. As grey as the clouds are now, so were my apprehension about this assignment when it was first handed to me. I am trying my best to pen down my thoughts about this personal reflective journal. It seems as though time has taken a pause as I try to fit my whole life experience into the given word limit.The lessons in first three weeks of the course I had were truly informative, educative and best of all, impressive. The experience was better than what a textbook could offer and it was a real reflective learning process for me as I used to think I knew myself very much but honestly I did not. Topics that were introduced to me were both personal skills - developing self-awareness and managing press, and interpersonal skills - communicating supportively, gaining personal power and building relationships and so forth. The most principal tool was pedagogical approach as stated in the model view, which comprehensively led me to apply its five steps to reflect myself.Week OneLooking back to the first week of the course reminds me of the confusion in my undergraduate studies. As a graduate at the subject of automation which is related to computer science and engineering, I was expected to be an engineer in my future career perspective. However, I came to realise that I did not like this at all afterwards though I could perform well in this field. I thought there was no bright future for me to be an engineer, along with the ideas from other people that only managers could besuccessful as they could make more money than engineer. After gathering a lot of information about my career future, I made up my mind to find a job completely irrelevant to engineering, and fortunately I got a chance to work as an intern at a consultancy company. Surprisingly, after three months internship, I completely changed my previous view to be a manager because I found myself lost and could not position myself well. Later I become more and more confused about my career as what I experienced are completely different from what I thought before. I always questioned myself - "Is that what I want?" Subsequently, an idea came up to my mind - go abroad. And that was primarily the reason why I came to Ireland for my master one month ago.Even now, the confusion often comes up to my mind, and I still feel lost again. It seems that all I did was just trying to escape from reality. After learning the first session on developing self-awareness, I return to what I thought before. I do have a different perspective. I think I was experiencing a learning process which helps me know much clearly the "self" inside. My world was too narrow at that time. When I looked into the book - developing management skills which I was learning, it came up with the term - personal values which I had never thought about my own. According to Lopper (2007), a value is a principle or quality intrinsically valuable or desirable to a persona. They are personal and they are our convictions, our beliefs, and our ethics rolled into one. I ask myself inside what is my value, what kind of jobs make me happy and what kind of person I am. I used to do well in engineering projects and was praised by my teachers, and I do like to communicate with people and want to be a team leader. I think the reason that I was lost could be mostly attributed to be my easily influenced by the external factors. Returning to the lessons, I realise that my cognitive style is like a combination of knowing style and creative style. I like to gather lots of information and engage in brainstorming. But I also like to focus on the underlying logic of the information. Now things become more clearly in my mind. What I need to do is to go through and to deal with the challenge I am facing. Learning project management is an effective way for me to combine my engineeringbackground with management skills. Probably I could be a good manager in an engineering company in the forthcoming years.Week TwoAt this week we learned about how to cope with and manage stress. In this topic, going back to the day I was taking the flight to Ireland one month ago, it was really a nightmare. I had never been out of China and never been on plane for such a long time for nearly 11 hours. I felt uncomfortable from the outset, and later I felt a little bit dizzy and thirsty which made me scary. There were a lot of entertainment programs on the television but seriously I could not concentrate on and found them extremely boring. I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep as I thought time could fly faster even it was approved to be not. Things became even worse as I could not ever relax at all when the captain of the airplane announced that our airplane was experiencing some turbulence. I fastened my seat belt as soon as possible and the bad omens always came up to my mind which made me feel stressful as I can only attribute my fear to the string of past plane crashes. The thought that I might be caught up in one fuels this fear.After learning how to manage stress, I return back to that day, I realise that I was facing an anticipatory stressor, which includes, according to Whetten and Cameron (2011), potentially disagreeable events that threaten to occur or unpleasant things that have not yet happened, but might happen. The reason why I feared was because personally I do hate flying when I was young and it simply scares me. Although I am aware of the heightened security measures taken, I am still not very much convinced. Thus, I felt suffocated as I had no control over what was to come. In relation to this session, I realise that fears result from anticipatory stressor can be eliminated or lessened in appropriate ways. I should have used some temporary stress-reduction techniques to help myself relaxed such as muscle relaxation, deep breathing, and changing the focus of my thoughts by using imagery and fantasy. To some stress thatcan not be eliminated, I should never brush them aside. Instead, I should use psychological resiliency to handle them and believe that all obstacles are conquerable or somehow seen less unbearable. Now I do not fear flying and know how to handle the stress that I am faced with.Week ThreeThe topic of the week three that I was most connected with was gaining power. I have never thought about the word power in depth before. As I said in the week one reflection, I had been looking for jobs since the year from late 2010 to early 2011. I experienced a lot of job selection processes and interviews. That was always a question which is very simple but also difficult to answer - "Why you?" Recalling the day I received the letter confirming that I passed the first round interview of Procter-Gamble and I had never been so happy before because it implied me that what I sacrificed had been rewarded. However, when it came to the last round, I thought I did well at that interview but I was disappointed afterwards as I failed. I questioned myself -"Why not me?" At the time I could not realise what was the real criteria of an interview as the hiring managers always asked some simple questions. Also, I did not know how they differentiate the core competences between different candidates. I could pass the first and two rounds of the whole selection but I could also be a loser at the final, and sometimes I could never get the interview chance after I applied. All of these made me confused at that time. Reflecting myself after this week, the answer comes up to my mind. It is all about the power as Burns (2010) says, ‘People love power. Not because people are evil, but because power means survival.’(/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2010/09/08/7-ways-to -be-powerful-at-work)Yes, thinking it over, the days I studied hard, ran for a class representative, and even hunted for a job were the days I was gaining power because I wanted to be good. But now I see that “good” does not mean good enough. I think I was not ready enough tobe there. I lacked of the power needed at that time so that I did not have a strong position to be confident. I used to do well in my undergraduate studies, but I did never think about the ambitions to be an expertise in my study. Now I realise that expertise is an important source of power. Furthermore, attraction is another source of personal power, probably I did not reflect my personal charm to the hiring managers at that interview as I could have done better if I knew myself more before.ConclusionAs I am writing this, I am noticing how useful it is to go back over things I have experienced before. I seem to be able to see the situation differently. I have never written reflective journals before and I find it very interesting as I am sharing my stories to myself and other readers. It really helps me learn a lot about myself and recognize some of the areas in which I went wrong. At the time I could not see that.
