At the age of ten, my parents thought that I should learn to play an instrument. They chose guitar lessons for me. I had no interest in playing it. All that I wanted to do was to improve my soccer skills. However, my parents believed that playing soccer was a waste of my valuable time. They thought I should use the time to focus on school and develop my brain by taking on a difficult task, such as learning to play music.
However, since the first day of the lessons, I disliked the guitar. While learning to play the guitar, I just wanted to play soccer as much as I could. But what could a ten-year-old do when his parents said they would punish him if he didn’t do what they told him to do?
Even though I loathed the guitar lessons with all my heart, I went to the guitar teacher week after week. And week after week, I would come back and be tired of the lessons and of the practice hours required.
After wasting a year of my life learning how to play the guitar, I still had not made much progress. My parents began to realize that I was not born to play the guitar and that I was not having fun trying to learn, either. They finally understood how much I wanted to play soccer. So after one bad year, my parents called the guitar teacher and told him I would no longer take guitar lessons.
I was very happy. Now I play soccer every day and I play it very well. I do think parents should let their children do what they’re good at and what they truly love.

“Hello” is a relatively new greeting. It first appeared sometime in the mid-1800s, but many people would not have dreamed of using it. “Hello” was considered a very impolite way to greet someone. Instead, people used formal expressions like “How do you do?”
Back then, there were several words that sounded like “hello,” but they were used to get someone’s attention or to express surprise. For example, if you caught your little brother stealing your snack, you might have said, “Halloa there! Stop eating my cheese!” If you found a fly in your soup, you might have shouted, “Hullo! How did that get in there?”
Everything started to change in 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. The first telephones didn’t have numbers you could dial, nor did they have bells or ringers. Instead, your telephone sent signals along telephone lines to a central office where an operator would answer by saying something like “Are you there, sir?” or “What is wanted?” The operator would then connect your phone to the phone of the person you wanted to reach. There was just one small problem: Since telephones didn’t ring, how would the person you were calling know that you were “on the line”? The answer is you would yell into your phone and hope someone on the other end heard you. But what would you yell? And what would the person you were calling say when they were going to answer? Bell suggested “Ahoy! Ahoy!” but it didn’t catch on. Then the famous inventor Thomas Edison suggested the word hello. That caught on right away.
“Hello” became so popular that by 1878 telephone operators were required to use it. In fact, operators received the nickname (绰号) “Hello Girls.” Soon, “hello” became not just the standard way to answer the phone, but an accepted way to greet people in person.
24. Why was “hello” seldom used when it first appeared?

C. people liked simple expressions like “hello”
D. Bell advised girls to use “hello”

I have an uncle who is pushing ninety years old. He still gets up early, gets dressed, and goes to work every day, and often on weekends. He doesn’t do it for the money; he’s covered in that department. He simply loves what he does so much that retirement has never entered his vocabulary. He owns his own business, even now that he’s hired a partner. Actually, work gives some seniors structure for their lives and purpose. Asking them to hang it all up is like asking them to cut off an arm. The good news is that people who choose not to retire may e nd up better off in many ways. Here are a few “he alth benefits” for you.
■Better Emotional Health
Besides the benefit of being physically healthy, work can give you an outlet to help you deal with everything from the sorrow of losing your spouse, to the depression that comes from feeling useless or lonely. If your identity is tied up in the work you do, losing that can bring on severe depression, even if you pursue other fun things in your retirement. Continuing to work may keep you emotionally healthier than retiring would.
■Better Financial Health
Working longer equals more money. While you may have to work longer if you aren’t financially prepared for retirement, choosing to work longer allows you to build up an even bigger nest egg. This is money that can be left to your children and grandchildren, donated to charity, used if you eventually decide to retire, or saved for serious health problems.
■Better Social Health
When people retire, they often have to look for new social groups, since they get cut off from their primary groups at work. They go to classes, or church, or join group activities in an effort to connect socially. Some people just aren’t up to this sort of thing, and instead end up isolated(隔离) in their retirement. If you don’t retire, you keep your social groups, and it’s easier to organize lunch outings or
work parties.
28. The author uses his uncle as an example to make us believe that _________.
A. retirement makes ninety-year-old people look younger
B. retired people’s vocabulary is always larger
C. not retiring will make many people live better
D. retired people can manage a business, too
29. The biggest challenge that retired people fight against emotionally is that they can’t _________.
A. be useful or find anyone to spend time with
B. keep physically and mentally healthy as usual
C. get over severe depression and tiring work
D. deal with the balance between work and life
30. The underlined phrase “nest egg” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to __________.
A. an organization built for your children and grandchildren
B. a health problem that makes retired people spend a lot of money
C. a charity only taking in money donated by retired people
D. a sum of money saved or kept for a special purpose
31. Why do retired people sometimes become unsocial?
A. They go to classes or churches after they retire.
B. They refuse to join lunch outings or work parties.
C. They don’t like to look for new social groups.
D. Their primary groups don’t like older people.

It is easy as a parent to get into the habit of calling your children names. Often these names are used as terms of love, but can still be damaging. Calling a child a little brat(顽童) or a booger can subconsciously(下意思地) convince them that they are those things. This can hurt their self-image and self-esteem. As a parent it is important to only use terms of love that can’ t be misconstrued by the child, such as sweetheart, darling, love, etc. or simply use their name.
It is important for children to improve and to know when they have done something wrong. If they are not corrected, they will continue to do things improperly. However, when a child faces criticism regularly, it becomes extremely natural for them to start criticizing themselves. As a parent, you should correct, not criticize your child. When pointing out things they have done wrong, or that need improvement, you should also point out good things. A child who never hears anything good about himself or his actions will eventually start to believe that there is nothing good about himself.
Children need to have their parents giving them attention every day. It is so easy to just let your children entertain themselves with books, television, video games, the computer, etc. It is possible to go a whole day without any kind of meaningful conversation between child and parent. Children who are not getting the attention they require from a parent will often stop doing school work, get in trouble, or find few positive friends. It is important to remember to make real efforts to have conversations about likes, dislikes, dreams, fears, friendships, morals (道德), etc. daily, so that a child knows he can talk to you, interrupt you if necessary, etc.
The parent child relationship is one of the most important relationships a child has. As a parent, you should continually try to improve your parenting, and help your children to love themselves, and believe they have worth. If they do, they will go further, and be more successful in every aspect of their life. If you don’t, your child may face some real struggles that could have been easily avoided.
32. The underlined word “misconstrued” in the first paragraph probably means ______.
A. purchased.
B. misunderstood.
C. constructed.
D. formed.
33. When a child does something wrong, parents ought to _________.
A. criticize themselves.
B. improve themselves.
C. criticize the child about it.
D. help him correct his mistakes.
34.What do children value most according to Paragraph 3?
A. Video games.
B. Their school work.
C. Their parents’ attention.
D. Conversations with friends.
35. In the last paragraph, the author advises readers to _________.
A. improve their parenting.
B. realize their own dreams.
C. spend quality time with children.
D. balance their praise and criticism.
