Topic 7:argumentative writingsStep One Check the homeworkStep Two argumentative writings

常用的过渡词和连接词包括:first, second, third, finally, sum up等等。

Minor premise: Nuclear power plants are safe sources of energy. Conclusion: Therefore, nuclear power plants should be constructed. (Notice: Some complex issues require more than one premise to be proved.)

Argumentative ParagraphWritingT ask 1: Analysis of an argumentative paragraphStudy a sample argumentative paragraph and find out how it is organized. In my view, working as a volunteer is a good way to improve young people’s sense of social responsibility. First of all, working as a volunteer is a big challenge to youth, for it provides them chances to engage in various activities, such as serving the elderly, educating the illiterate and preserving the environment. When they find they really can be of some help to others, they’ll become more confident of their abilities. Also, there is a widespread proverb, “a good exercise for the heart is bending down and helping someone to get up”, which means that by offering help, young people touch the lives of others and enrich their own. They learn to be helpful, and thus develop a good understanding of love---to love is to give. Moreover, they gain experience from voluntary work, which might be helpful to their future job. Nowadays, it’s estimated that there have been 30 million registered volunteers in China, which reflects the increasing social responsibility among youth. Here are some suggested ways of writing an argumentative paragraph:①Express your opinion clearly in a topic sentence.②Give relevant and accurate reasons or facts as evidence.③Give examples or quotations.④Use transition words and phrases that signal your supporting evidence. Logic in Argumentative Writing
Argumentation
• The purpose of exposition is to inform; the purpose of argumentation , on the other hand, is to convince, to persuade the reader to change his mind or behavior. If you want to write a good argumentative essay, you should do your best to meet the following requirements.
Induction reasoning is somewhat more common in argumentation: it begins with facts and builds from them to a general conclusion. In practice a writer will usually find it more convenient to indicate his conclusion first and then bring forward the evidence which supports it. This is only a matter of arrangement, however, and does not deny the essential order of particular to general.
easily verified.
• We use logic every day to figure out test questions, plan our budgets, and decide who to date. We borrow from the vocabulary of logic when we say, "Brilliant deduction" or even "I don't want to argue about it." In the study of logic, however, each of these terms has a specific definition, and we must be clear on these if we are to communicate.
Based on this data, then , you could reasonably conclude: Buildings wired by the Municipal Works Company are likely to have faulty wiring. Note that you cannot reasonably conclude that all buildings wired by this company have faulty wiring, because your evidence does not support that conclusion: all.
Inductive reasoning
Induction refers to the process of examining particular details and then arriving at a conclusion based on that evidence. For example, suppose you were an investigator and you were asked to look into the causes of a fire which had happened in a famous department store. After some inspection and research, you learned that the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring. Then you were expected to find which wire company had installed the wiring. After making inquire about the matter, you came to know that the Municipal Works Company was the contractor unit. Further research enables you to have discovered that 60% of the buildings wired by the compnay caught fire within two years, and of those fires, 85% were due to faulty ekectrical wiring.
