Frightened by the thought that she was having a heart attack, Anne screamed for help. Her husband immediately rushed Anne to a nearby hospital where her pains were diagnosed (诊断)as having been caused by panic, and not a heart attack.More and more Americans nowadays are having panic attacks like the one experienced by Anne Peters. Studies discover that approillion adult individuals are currently suffering from severe and recurrent(重复发作) panic attacks. There have been a lot of explanations as to the causes of panic attacks. Many claim that psychological stress could be a logical cause, but as yet, no evidence has been found to support this theory. Recent reports have shown there are at least three signs that indicate a person is suffering from a panic attack rather than a heart attack. The first is age. People between the ages of 20 and30 are more often victims of panic attacks. The second is seen suffer from recurrent panic attacks than men. The third is the variety of symptoms. A heart attack victim often experiences only pain and shortness of breath while a panic attack victim usually suffers more symptoms than the two mentioned. It is generally agreed that a panic attack does not directly endanger a person’s life. All the same, it can negatively affect a person’s life by m aking him or her so afraid of having a panic attack at a public place that he or she may refuse to leave home. Dr Crocker’s advice to anyone who thinks he is suffering from a panic attack is to consult a doctor for a medical examination to rule out the possibilities of physical illness first. Once it has been confirmed that he or she is, in fact, suffering from a panic attack, the victim should turn to psychologists and doctors.1.What happened to Anne?A.Her heart failed. 人教版2017-2018学年高一英语必修一课后练习.:Unit 3 第3课时

Unit 3第3课时Ⅰ.阅读理解People who like travelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view, especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens(使扩大)our mind.We can get in touch with other civilizations(文明), cultures, customs and ideas.Through history, most people travelled because of necessity(必要性)—not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for the fun of it. In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity (好奇心). They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon (地平线). Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures. So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us. There is no doubt that we can get much from it.1.The underlined word “expand” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by“________”.A.widen B.protectC.lose D.decide2.According to the passage, in the past most people travelled ________.A.for fun B.for knowledgeC.to get experiences D.to make a living3.In the writer's opinion, travelling can be ________.A.expensive B.funnyC.helpful D.tiring4.What's the main idea of this passage?A.Different kinds of travelling.B.Travelling enriches our mind.C.Ways to enjoy yourself while travelling.D.The advantages and disadvantages of travelling.Ⅱ.七选五What is the secret of writing a good letter? Artisan Gallery & Creamery café.D. Christopher Columbus Museum.3.Where can we most probably find the passage?A. In a health report.B. In a story book.C. In a parenting magazine.D. In a tour guide.BThese days, young people in some English-speaking countries are speaking a strange language, especially when communicating on social media.Look at these words chosen by The Washington Post: “Da vid Bowie dying is totes tradge,” and “When Cookie hugged Jamal it made me totes emosh.” Or this sentence: “BAE, let me know if you stay in tonight.”What on earth do they mean? Well, “totes” is a short form of “totally”. Similarly, “tradge” means “tragic”and “emosh” means “emotional”. It seems that, for millennials(千禧一代), typing in this form is not only time-saving but fashionable. As you can see, many millennial slangs(俚语)are formed by so-called “totesing”—the systematic abbreviation(缩写)of words. The trend might have started with “totally” becoming “totes”, but it now has spread to many other English words. The origins of other millennial slangs are more complex than “totesing”.“Bae”, for example, has been widely used by African-Americans for years. It can be an expression of closeness with one’s romantic partner or, like “sweetheart”, for someone without romantic connection. After pop singer Pharrell used the word in his work, “bae” became mainstream. Some people might think millennial slangs lower the value of the English language, but Melbourne University linguist(语言学家)Rosey Billington doesn’t agree. She says when people are able to use a language in a creative way, they showthat they know the language rules well enough to use words differently. Two other linguists, Lauren Spradlin and Taylor Jones, share the same view. The two analysed hundreds of examples of totes-speak and discovered totesing has complex roots. It isn’t simply an adult version of baby talk, nor a clever way to minimize your word count. Rather, it is a highly organized system that relies on a speaker's mastery of English pronunciation. It is about sounds, follows sound system of English and has strict rules.4. Why do young people like using e-slangs?A. They are time-consuming.B. They are in fashion.C. They are complex.D. They are in order.5. What’s the author’s purpose of mentioning “Bae” in Paragraph 5?A. To support that totesing is no baby talk.B. To analyse the usage of millennial slangs.C. To inform people how it became mainstream.D. To explain the complex origins of millennial slangs.6. Which statement may Rosey Billington agree with?A. Totesing is a loosely organized system.B. Millennial slangs lower the value of English.C. It’s simply a clever way to reduce the word count.D. Totes-speak requires a good command of English.7. What’s the best title of the passage?A. Millennial Slangs Catch on Among YouthB. Linguists Disapprove of TotesingC. Millennial Slangs Take the LeadD. English Has Greatly ChangedCFat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Foothall, tennis, cricket-anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England. It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to-ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon. The following year he met John Ridgway and was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s school of adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold-water exploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, then decided that this would be his future. In 2019, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite, ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled (雪橇)up and over rocky ice.Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied m ore of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change.Next October, Saunder, 27, heads south from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, a 2900-kilometer journey that has never been completed on skis.8. After the age of 15, Saunders ________.A. joined a sports teamB. began to build up his bodyC. made friends with a runnerD. became good at most sports.9. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “exploits” in paragraph 3?A. Journeys.B. Researches.C. Adventures.D. Operations.10. Which of the following is the correct order of the events about Saunders?C. a→e-→b→dD. c→a→b-→d11. What does the story mainly tell us about Saunders?A. He is a success in sports.B. He is the best British skier.C. He is a good instructor at school.D. He is Ridgway’s favorite student.DMost people say that most people have not more than 30 friends at any given time, and 400 over the whole of their lives. However, on social networking sites, most users have about 150 friends. If these numbers are correct, then friendship means differentthings in different situations. Also, there are no rules about friendship. There are no instructions about how to make friends, how to keep friendships going, and how to finish friendships if we want to move on. People have very different opinions about this: some people would die for their friends and they value them more than family. Others say that friends are not always there. They are only there to help each other until they are no longer needed. If people with such different views become friends, this can lead to problems.Because of these different definitions of friendship, it is easy to be unhappy about our friendships. We may want them to be deeper or closer, or we may want to have more friends in our lives. Sometimes we simply do not have the time to develop our friendships, or we fear we have left it too late in life to start. If we move to another country or city, we have to find ways, to make new friends again. This dissatisfaction shows us how important friendships are for most of us. We should not think that it could be too late to build friendships. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that is shared by many. Therefore, we should not be too frightened about starting to talk to people who in the future may become our friends: it is likely that they too would like to get closer to us. Remember what people say: strangers are friends we have not met yet.12. In most people’s opinion, the majority of people probably have ______.A. 400 internet friends in their whole livesB. Over 400 friends in their whole livesC. 10 friends or fewer at a certain stageD. 150 internet friends at a certain stage13. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?A. Friendships mean different things to different people.B. People with different views can become friends.C. Some people would die for their friends if they need to.D. There is a rule about making friends.14. We can learn from the last paragraph that most of us ________.A. need to be with othersB. build friendships late in lifeC. are dissatisfied with our friendsD. are frightened to talk to people15. 2017--2018学年人教版必修一Unit 3 Travel journal reading课时作业

Unit 3 Travel journal reading课时作业Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2017·湖北武汉调研)Today we were heading out to what is arguably one of the most beautiful natural wonders of this region, Saklikent Gorge (峡谷),a 300-meter-deep canyon that is close to Fethiye. However, first,we had to enter the canyon. Before us was a raging river about 20 meters across, and we would have to wade (跋涉) through to get to the entrance of the gorge. I lost my breath when my foot made contact with the water. My whole foot had turned numb. I shot out of the water, fast as a rabbit, screaming like a wild dog. I'm sure it was a sight to see. Dad and Lalika seemed to bear it better, as they were the first to begin heading through the fast flowing waters.Soon it was up to their knees, but battling their way through they were the first of our family to make it across. During this time I was considering if I really wanted to go through with this. The look on Mom's face showed me that there was no alternative. She took my hand and we began making our way through the ice-cold water to the sound of Lalika's cheers. I nearly slipped at one point but thankfully I recovered in time and Mom and I came out of the water half dry and very happy. Then the canyon was in front of us.I began to wade through the softest flowing grey clay that had deposited itself over thousands of years between this magnificent Moorish pink gorge towering over me. I was surprised that the locals hadn't already made a beauty industry out of this, mining this natural resource, when I remembered that thankfully, it was a protected national possession, located in a national park. That didn't stop Dad and Lalika from making a mud pack, as the two of them smoothed the liquid clay all over their faces, arms and legs. The mud also made great war paint and Lalika and I had a really fun time applying it before role playing a fierce battle of the clans (家族). After about 45 minutes of walking, we came to a fork in the canyon, and we decided to return.1.What did the author think of the river?A.Cold.B.Deep.C.Wide. D.Dirty.2.What made the author decide to cross the river?A.Dad and Lalika's example.B.Mom's facial expression.C.Strong determination.D.Family promises.3.Why could Saklikent Gorge be preserved?A.It was hard to enter.B.It belonged to the locals.C.It had no value to develop.D.It had been protected by the government.4.What can we learn about the canyon?A.It is colorful. B.It is muddy.C.It is boring.

How come we think dogs are so smart? A dog might be clever enough to fetch his lead when he wants to go out.But he might also spend a whole hour running after his own tail. How can you measure an animal’s brain power? The hardest part is coming up with the right test. The test has to be something the dog can learn to do: select a block by pushing it with a nose, for example. The test also has to be something the dog wants to do: a dog might stare at that block until he figures out there’s a hidden treat.Researchers use treats to give dogs IQ tests. The dog is presented with a plate with a blue block on it; underneath the block is a treat. The animal moves the block and gets the treat. Now the test gets tricky. The dog is presented with the same plate, but this time it has a blue block and a yellow coffee can lid(盖子)on it; the treat is under the yellow lid.The test: how long does it take the dog to learn that the treat is always under the new object on the plate? The smarter the dog, the quicker he’ll find the treat. That seems simple enough, but things become more complicated (复杂的) when you try to compare different kinds of animals.Monkeys__wipe__the__floor__with__dogs on this test.Dogs may have to try hundreds of times before they select the yellow lid.Monkeys learn much more quickly to find the hidden treat.Does that mean monkeys are smarter than dogs? Not necessarily. The test was originally designed for monkeys, and it gives them an unfair advantage: by nature monkeys are curious and like to check out new things.Dogs tend to be cautious about approaching new things.Even if you could find a test that was perfectly fair to all animals, it’s silly to ask whether one kind of animal is smarter than another. All animals have the ability to learn things that are important to them.Otherwise they wouldn’t survive.A chicken can figure out where to get food or how to run from a predator(食肉动物).So a chicken is as smart as it needs to be.1.What is a requirement for a test of animal intelligence?A.The test must include a block like object.B.The test must compare two different animals.C.The test must be given when the animal is in training.D.The test must be something that can be taught to an animal.D解析:细节理解题。

2017--2018学年人教版必修一Unit3traveljournalreading课时作业(1)

Unit 3 Travel Journal reading 课时作业阅读理解AThe recession (经济衰退) of 2008 – 2009 was remarkable in rich countries and the following recovery is weak. The labor market has also broken the rules, as new research from the OECD shows in its annual Employment Outlook.Young people always suffer in recessions. Employers stop hiring them; and they often get rid of new young people because they are easier to fire. But in the previous recessions of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, older workers were also kicked out. This time is different. During the financial crisis in 2008, and since, they have done better than other age groups. The researchers focus on change s in “non-employment” as a share of the total population of three age groups between the final quarters of 2007 and 2012. This measure has the advantage of including not just unemployment, where people are looking for work, but also inactivity, where people are not seeking jobs. While the average non-employment rate in the OECD has risen by four percentage points among young people and by one-and-a-half points among 25 to 54-year-olds, it has fallen by two points among the 55-64 age group. Why have older employees done so well? In some southern European countries they benefit from job protection not afforded to younger workers, but that did not really help them in the past recessions. “What has changed,” says Stefano Scarpetta, head of the OECD, “is that firms now bear the full costs of getting rid of older staff.” The past early-retirement schemes (方案) provided by governments (in the mistaken belief that these would help young people) made it cheaper to push grey-haired workers out of the door. These have largely been stopped.Job losses among older workers have also been more than offset (抵消) by falls in inactivity, reflecting pressures that were already obvious before the crisis. Older workers now have a sharper motivation to stay in employment because of the impact of the crisis on wealth. Besides, older workers are healthier than they used to be and work is less physically demanding. They are also more attractive to employers than previous generations. Today’s 55to 64-year-olds are the advance group of the post-war generations who benefited from better education than their previous ones. Many will argue that older workers have done better at the expense of the young. That view is absurd. First, it is a fallacy that a job gained for one person is a job lost for another; there is nofixed “lump of labor (劳动合成)”. And second, as the report shows, young and old people are in general not replacers in the workplace. They do different types of work in different types of occupation; younger people are more attracted by IT firms, for example, while older folks tend to be employed in more traditional industries. There are plenty of things that should be done to help the young jobless, but getting older workers out of the workplace is not one of them.1. The original purpose of the past early-retirement schemes provided by governments is to ________.A. cut the high cost of the elderlyB. make room for young peopleC. establish good social welfare systemD. guarantee the retirement life of the elderly2. Why do older workers have a lower non-employment rate than the young people?A. Their health condition is better than that of the young people.B. They have better education background than the young people.C. The present retirement scheme ensures them more benefits than the previous one.D. Their education background caters to employers more than that of the young people.3. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “fallacy”in the last paragraph?A. Wrong belief .B. Common assumption.C. Simple truth.D. Beautiful dream.4. What could be the best title of the passage?A. Unfair in employment?B. Job discrimination?C. Young people suffer?D. Glad to be grey?BChina suffers choking smog, mass destruction of habitats and food poisoned with heavy metals. But ask an environmentalist what is the country’s biggest problem, and the answer is always the same. “Water is the wors t,” says Wang Tao, of the Carnegie Tsinghua Centre in Beijing, “because of its shortage, and because of its pollution.”“Without water,” agrees Pan Jiahua, of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, “people cannot survive in a deser t.”Wang Shucheng, a former water minister, once said, “To fight for every drop of water or die. That is the challenge facing China.” He was not exaggerating (夸大).China uses 600 billion cubic meters of water a year. The national average hides an even more alarming regional difference. Four fifths of China’s water is in the south, particularly the Yangtzeriver basin. Half the people and two thirds of the farmland are in the north, including the Yellow River basin. Beijing has the sort of water shortage usually associated with Saudi Arabia: just 100 cubic meters per person a year.China is using up water at an unsustainable (无法可持续的) rate. As if that were not bad enough, ___________________________. The Yellow River is often called the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, a third of the water is unfit even for agriculture. Four thousand petrochemical factories are built on its banks. The water available for use is thus so bad. Song Lanhe, chief engineer for urban water quality monitoring at the housing ministry, says only half the water sources in cities are safe to drink. More than half the groundwater in the north China plain cannot be used for industry, while seven tenths is unfit for human contact, even for washing. The best answer would be to improve the efficiency (效率) with which water is used. Only about 40% of water used in industry is recycled, half as much as in Europe. The rest is dumped in rivers and lakes. Wang Zhansheng of Tsinghua University argues that China is neglecting its urban water infrastructure (基础设施), leading to more waste. Water prices in most cities are only about a tenth of the level in big European cities, yet the government is unwilling to raise them, for fear of a popular criticism. The result is that China’s“water productivity” is low.Rather than making wise reforms in pricing and water protection, China is focusing on increasing supplies. The best known such project is the Three Gorges dam on the Yangtze. But this year an even vaster project – the South North Water Diversion Project (南水北调工程) – is due to start. It will link the Yangtze with the Yellow River, taking water from the wet south to the dry north. When finished, it is intended to deliver 45 billion cubic meters of water a year and to cost a total of 486 billion yuan ($79.4 billion). The environmental damage could be huge. The Yangtze is already seriously polluted. The project so far has reduced the quantity of underwater life in the Yangtze by over two thirds. And that was before it even opened. Ma Jun, China’s best known environmental activist, says the government’s preference for giant engineering projects only makes matters worse, “causing us to hit the limits of our water resources”. The water crisis is driving China to desperate but eventually unhelpful measures.5. From the first two paragraphs we know that ________.A. water is badly polluted in most of the area of ChinaB. the water in China is unfit for people to survive in a desertC. Wang Shucheng was sad about China’s futureD. people in North China are facing a more serious water shortage6. Which of the following may help complete the missing sentence in Para. 3?A. China is polluting what little water it has left.B. The biggest damage of the water shortage could be political.C. 300 dead bodies were found floating in the Yellow River near Lanzhou.D. The Chinese government have reacted to water problems by huge but harmful projects.7. How does Song Lanhe convince us that the water available for use is so bad?A. By listing data.B. By giving examples.C. By making comparisons.D. By delivering warnings.8.
