对于语篇类型的划分有多种方 式，最具代表性的是赖斯的功能语 篇类型学、哈蒂姆·梅森的交际语 篇类型学和约翰·斯密斯的体裁分 析理论现已成为ESP（English for Specific Purposes）研究领域的主 流。

前者根据语言功能划分了三种纯语篇类型:信息型 语篇(informative text)、表达型语篇(expressive text)和呼唤型语篇(operative text)。
后者基于韩礼德的系统功能语法理论，从语境 的维度出发，划分了三种基本语篇类型:论说型语 篇(argumentative text type)、说明型语篇 （expository text type)和指导型语篇 (instructional text type)。

这些基本的语篇类型与具体的语篇体裁有一定的
关系。所以, 有时语篇类型与语篇体裁在术语上被 当作同义词使用, 只不过语篇类型的范畴划分被认 为较抽象和理论化; 语篇体裁的划分则更具经验化。 语篇体裁反映了有效的、有意识的在特定情景下对 语言手段正确的选择。实际上, 许多中外语言学者 经常把它们当作同义词使用。

任何语篇都是置于一定的语境中，语境决定 任何特定语篇聚焦点的方式，语境聚焦点在语 篇的交际进度中通过语篇类型实现。语篇类型 是能够从服务于总体修辞目的的各种交际意图 角度对诸种语篇进行划分的一种概念框架。
篇章语言学研究的目的之一是将语篇进行归 类划分。划分的标准是多维的。一些学者将语 篇归为有限的几类。比如 Werlich 将语篇归为五 类, 即, 描写文( description) 、叙述( narration) 、 说明文( exposition)、议论文( argumentation) 和指令文(说明书) (instruction)。

近年来，社会语言学、话语分析、语篇语 言学、语用学和符号学的研究促进了翻译的 研究。20 世纪80年代，语篇语言学和话语分 析在翻译研究中占主导地位。翻译研究不再 单纯地停留在词汇句法层面上，而是在语篇 层面展开。语篇类型是语篇语言学的一个重 要研究对象。作为某一特定语篇类型的成员， 每个语篇都存在于真实的语篇环境中。每一 个特定的语篇都归属于某一语篇范畴，语篇 范畴的词汇和语法特点体现着社会文化规范。
Peter Newmark points out that typical "informative" texts are concerned with any topic of knowledge, while texts with literary subjects are apt to lean towards "expressiveness", and then he shows that the format of an informative text often follows certain standards, such as text book, technical report, article in a newspaper or periodical, scientific paper, thesis minutes or agenda of a meeting.

Operative text
The core of the operative function of language is the readership, the addressee. Newmark points out that operative texts are more often addressed to a readership than a reader, for the purposes of translation, he takes notices, instructions, publicity, propaganda, persuasive writing (requests, cases, theses) and possibly popular fiction, whose purpose is to sell a product/entertain the reader, as typical " operative " text.
