Super typhoon Megi is expected to enter the South China Sea Tuesday, meteorological authorities said Monday. Fishing vessels in the area have been returning to harbors for shelter. Megi made landfall in the northern Philippines at 11:25 am Monday local time and caused landslides, Reuters reported.

Santos Salinas Garza, head of the town said nobody was injured but confirmed that about 15 officers had fled out of terror. "They resigned because of this situation," he said. Police stations in small northeastern Mexican towns are frequently targets of drug-related violence and ill-equipped municipal forces often quit after attacks by cartels.

朝炮击韩岛屿多人死伤

The DPRK shot dozens of rounds of artillery onto a populated ROK island near their disputed western border Tuesday, prompting the ROK to return fire and scramble fighter jets, Xinhua reported. Reportedly fired at 2:34 pm local time, some shells landed on the Yeonpyeong Island and local residents have currently moved to shelters. One ROK soldier was killed while 13 others were injured, with 3 of them in a critical condition, according to YTN television. A witness was quoted as saying 60 to 70 houses were on fire after the biggest attack in years.

Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered an investigation and declared Thursday a national day of mourning. He then said that the government will pay the families of the dead 5m riel ($1,250) each and provide 1m riel ($250) for each injured person.

Efforts to rescue 29 men trapped in a New Zealand coal mine suffered yet another setback after a high-tech robot sent into the main shaft broke down, the Daily Mail of London reported. The robot became wet and short-circuited 550 meters along the main shaft, still about 1 km from the suspected site of the original explosion. Officials have said the possibility that the men can still survive looks increasingly remote as every day passes. Families and friends are showing grief and frustration.

More than 140 Mexican prisoners have escaped from a jail near the US border, BBC reported Saturday. The prisoners broke out of the jail in Nuevo Laredo late Thursday or early Friday morning. Security guards are being questioned on suspicion of helping the inmates flee, and the prison director has gone missing. Security forces in the area have launched a massive search, while troops and federal police have been deployed to guard the prison.
