新视野大学英语(第三版)读写教程 4 unit1 课后答案我在网上查,感觉太乱了,干脆自己做一个好了。
Understanding:1.Answer the following questions.1.What is the deal between the narrator and his roommate, Rob? Why do they make the deal? The deal between them is that the narrator gives Rob his leather jacket, and Rob, in exchange, gives the narrator his girlfriend. They make the deal because they want to get something from each other: Robis crazy about fashion, and he wants to own the narrator's fashionable leather jacket; the narrator longs to have a beautiful girlfriend, and Rob's girlfriend is beautiful.2.Why does the narrator want to have a beautiful and well-spoken girlfriend? He thinks a beautiful and well-spoken girlfriend will assist him to land a job and achieve success in an elite law company.3.Whenthe narrator and Polly have their first date, the narrator says that what he has gotin mind is a little eccentric. Why?The narrator feels this way because he can't stop thinking that his purpose of dating Polly is not for romance but for improving her intelligence, and he can't let Polly know his plan.4.Why does the narrator decide to teach Polly logic? The narrator decides to teach Polly logic because he believes logic is essential to clear thinking. By teaching Polly logic, he can make her intelligent.5.Howdoes Polly respond to the narrator when he teaches her logic? What effect do her responses create? When the narrator teaches her logic, Polly responds either shortly with "Cool", "Great", "I like that idea", or simply with nodding or blinking without saying anything. These responses give us an impression that Polly is a nice but rather simple-minded girl.6.Is the n arrator successful in teachi ng Polly logic? How do you kno w?Yes. He is only too successful in teach ing Polly logic because inthe end when he asks Polly to be his girlfriend, Polly refuses his request by appl ying all the logical fallacies he has taught her.7.Why does the n arrator say "You know the thi ngs you lear n in school don't have anything to do with real life" (Para. 36)?Because he wants to make one more attempt to win Polly as his girlfriend by ask ing her to forget what he has taught her.8.In what sense is the end of the story ironic? The end of the story is ironic because Polly turns out to be smarter than the narrator. First, she is able to refute all his arguments as logical fallacies. Then, she discloses that she and Rob have played a trick on him. The n arrator has bee n too smart for his own good.三、选词填空Fill in the blanks with the words given below. Change the form where n ecessary. • 2 No.
• 3 Does this mean that French men seeking work with the Disney organization must shave off their moustaches too?
• 8 But what do people think of Euro Disney? People everywhere are wondering whether Europeans would like this form of American
recreation.
• 9 For all its concern about foreign cultural invasion and its defense against the pollution of the French language by English words, France's Socialist government has been untroubled about putting such a huge American symbol on the doorstep of the capital and has been more concerned about its economic effect. It made an extraordinary series of tax and financial concessions to attract the theme park here rather than let it go to sunny Spain.
• 4 It depends.
• 5 A labor inspector took the Disney organization to court this week, contending(new words) that the company's dress and appearance code—which bans moustaches, beards, excess weight, short skirts and fancy stockings—offends individual liberty and violates French labor law.
• 7 The Disney management, which is assembling what it calls a "cast" of 12,000 to run the theme park, argues that all the employees, from bottle washers to the president, are similar to actors who have to obey rules about appearance. Anyway, a company spokesman says, no one has yet put his moustache before a job.As one new "cast member" put it: "You must believe in what you are doing, or you would have a terrible time here.
• 6 The case is an illustration of some of the delicate cultural issues the company faces as it gets ready to open its theme park 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Paris in five months' time.
• 10 The theme park itself will be only part of a giant complex of housing, office, and resort developments stretching far into the next century, including movie and television production facilities. As part of its deal with the Disney organization, the government is laying and paying for new highways, an extension of Paris' regional express railway and even a direct connection to the high speed TGV railway to the Channel Tunnel. The TGV station is being built in front of the main entrance of Euro Disneyland, and is scheduled to come into servf Euro Disneyland succeeds—theme parks already in France have so far failed—a second and even a third park is likely to be built by the end of the century. Financial experts say that Euro Disneyland, the first phase of which is costing an estimated $3.6 billion, is essential to Disney's overall fortunes, which have been hit by competition and declining attendance in the United States.
