communicationsandcommerceareglobal;investmentismobile;technologyis almostmagical;andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal.weearnourlivelih oodinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrosstheearth. profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgen tquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy . ThisnewworldhasalreadyeichedthelivesofmillionsofAmericanswhoareable tocompeteandwininit.butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforless;wheno therscannotworkatall;whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreat enstobankruptmanyofourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenfearofcrimerobsl aw-abidingcitizensoftheirfreedom;andwhenmillionsofpoorchildrencannot evenimaginetheliveswearecallingthemtolead,wehavenotmadechangeourfri end.weknowwehavetofacehardtruthsandtakestrongsteps.butwehavenotdon eso.Instead,wehavedrifted,andthatdriftinghaserodedourresources,fractured oureconomy,andshakenourconfidence.

Thoughourchallengesarefearsome,soareourstrengths.AndAmericanshavee verbeena

restless,questing,hopefulpeople.wemustbringtoourtasktodaythevisionand willofthosewhocamebeforeus.

Fromourrevolution,thecivilwar,tothegreatDepressiontothecivilrightsmove ment,ourpeoplehavealwaysmusteredthedeterminationtoconstructfromthes ecrisesthepillarsofourhistory.ThomasJeffersonbelievedthattopreservetheve ryfoundationsofournation,wewouldneeddramaticchangefromtimetotime.w ell,myfellowcitizens,thisisourtime.Letusembraceit. ourdemocracymustbenotonlytheenvyoftheworldbuttheengineofourownren ewal.Thereis nothingwrongwithAmericathatcannotbecuredbywhatisrightwithAmerica.
