But he adds that "very little of the plicated tax law applies to young people who are just beginning their careers". Aording to Gilbert, 80 to 90 percent of Americans are not really burdened by the system's plications.Still, all the numbers and forms can be a little confusing to those who are just starting their careers. Some pull out their calculators and try to do the math alone. Some use ine tax software. Others just hand the whole responsibility over to tax firms like Gilbert's. Aording to ine tax law expert Linda Beale, young peoplewill often follow their parents' lead when filling their ine forms."Young people who grow up in wealthy households typically use professional tax services because their parents have always done so," said Beale, a professor at Wayne State University in Michigan State."On the other hand, most poorer young people probably try to do their own taxes, unless they want a quick'refund' with the help of a tax advisor".In fact, obeying the law has its benefits. For one, many young people can expect a tax refund. This means that, over the course of the year, they have paid too much in monthly federal or state taxes and are entitled to the difference.Bob Thalman, a 20-year-old university student, expects he will get a refund of about 100, which will probably go in the bank, or perhaps be used to pay for car insurance or credit card bills.Thalman called the whole process a "hassle", but added that he didn't wat to test the law by not filling his ine tax papers."I'm worried about what would happen if I failed to file," he said. "I know one individual who did not report his ine tax for many years, and he's now in federal prison.I certainly don’t want that."16.【题干】A college student with a part-time job is not required to file an ine tax form.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned17.【题干】The US ine tax system does not wholly apply to a college graduate who is just beginning his or her career.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned18.【题干】It's pretty easy for a beginner to report his or her ine tax.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned19.【题干】When young people file their ine tax form, they will often follow in their parents' footsteps.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned20.【题干】Young people from poorer families needn't file their ine tax forms.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned21.【题干】If one has failed to report his or her ine tax for quite a few years, he or she may be put in prison.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned22.【题干】The US ine tax system will be simplified in the next few years.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentionedTunguska Event1 A hundred years ago this week, a giganticexplosion ripped (撕裂) open the day y above a forest in western Siberia, leaving ascientific riddle that endures to this day.2 A dazzling light pierced the heavens, followed by a shock wave as strong as 1,000 atomic bombs. The explosionflattened 80 million trees across an area of 2,000 square kilometers. Thefireball was so great that, a day later, Londoners could read their newspapersunder the night sky. What caused the so-called Tunguska Event, named after thenearby Podkamennaya Tunguska river, still remains a mystery.3 Experts suspect it was a rock that, aftertraveling in space for millions of years, was destined to crash to Earth atexactly 7:17 a.m. on June 30, 1908. This possibility worries scientists.“Imagine an unspotted asteroid (小行星) hitting a significant chunk(块) of land ... and imagine ifthat area, unlike Tunguska, werepopulated,” the British science journal Nature mented recently.4 But no fragments of the “rock” have everbeen found. Finding such evidence would be important, for it would increase ourknowledge about the risk posed by dangerous Near Earth Objects (NEOs), sayItalian researchers Luca Gasperini, Enrico Bonatti and Giuseppe Longo. When thenext Tunguska NEO approaches, scientists will have to decide whether to try todeflect (使偏转) it or blowit up in space.5 However, several rival theories for theTunguska Event exist. Wolfgang Kundt, a professor at Germany's Bonn University, believes the Tunguska Event was caused by a massive escape of 10 million tonsof methane(甲烷)-rich gasfrom deep within earth's crust. Some people hold that the explosion was causedby an alien spaceship crash, or a black hole in the universe.23. Paragraph 224. Paragraph 325. Paragraph 426. Paragraph 5A. Competing ExplanationsB. The error ours because of a flaw in the way they estimate animal numbers from the piles of dung (粪) the creatures leave behind. The mistake could lead researchers to think that there are twice as many elephants as there really are in some regions, aording to Andrew Plumptre of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in New York.Biologist Katy Payne of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, agrees. "We really need to know elephant numbers and the evidence that we have is quite indirect," says Payne, who electronically tracks elephants.Counting elephants from planes is impossible in the vast rainforests of Central Africa. So researchers often estimate elephant numbers by counting dung piles in a given area. They also need to know the rate at which dung decays: Because it's extremely difficult to determine these rates, however, researchers counting elephants in one region tend to rely on standard decay rates established elsewhere. But researchers at the WCS have found that this decay rate varies from region to region depending on the climate and environment. Using the wrong values can lead the census astray (离开正道), says Plumptre. He and his colleague Anthony Chifu Nchanji studied decaying elephant dung in the forests of Cameroon. They found that the dung decayed between 55 and 65 per cent more slowly than the dung in the rainforests of neighbouring Gabon. If researchers use decay rates from Gabon to count elephants in Cameroon, they would probably find more elephants than are actually around. This could mean estimates in Cameroon are at least twice as high as those derived from decay rates calculated locally, says Plumptre. "However aurate your dung densityestimate might be, the decay rate can severely affect the result."Plumptre also says that the dung-pile census should be carried out over a region similar in size to an elephant's natural range. The usual technique of monitoring only small, protected areas distorts numbers because elephants move in and out of these regions, he says. "If the elephant population increases within the protected area, you can not determine whether it is a real increase or whether it isdue to elephants moving in because they are being poached (入侵偷猎) outside."Plumptre says that similar problems may also affectother animal census studies that rely on indirect evidence such as nests, tracks or burrows (地洞).1 The word "threatened" in the first sentence of the first paragraph could be best replaced byA "endangered".B "frightened".C "killed".D "angered".2 Why do researchers estimate elephant numbers in an area by counting dung piles?A Because elephants are difficult to catch.B Because it is not possible to count elephants from a plane.C Because it is not possible to keep track of elephants.D Because elephants are shy animals.3 Piles of dung can't be relied upon when it es to estimating elephant numbers becauseA they are different in size.B they scatter all over the region.C they are different in decay rate.D they are different in quality.4 Aording to Plumptre, the region over which a dung-pile census is carried out should beA small enough.B well protected.C carefully monitored.D large enough.5 The first word "He" in paragraph6 refers toA Andrew Plumptre.B Katy Payne.C Anthony Chifu Nchanji.D the writer of the article.。

Many executives have assumed that th is tool is beyond their grasp, available only to the charismatic<有魅力的> and the eloquent. Over the past several decades, though, experimental psychologists have learned which methods reliably lead people to concede, comply, or change. Their research shows that persuasion is governed by several principles that ca n be taught and applied. The first principle is that people are more likely to follow someone who is similar to them than someone who is not. Wise managers, then, ask peers to hel p make their cases. Second, people are more willing to cooperate with those who are not only like them but who like them, as well. So it’s worth the time to uncover real similarities and offer genuine praise.Third, experiments confirm the intuitive truth that people tend to treat yo u the way you treat them. It’s sound policy to do a favor before seeking one. Fourth, individuals are more likely to keep promises they make voluntarily and clearly. The message for managers here is to get commitments in writing. Fifth, studies show that people really do defer to <服从> experts. So before they att empt to exert influence, executives should take pains to establish their own ex pertise and not assume that it’s self-evident. Finally, people want more of a commodity when it’s scarce; it follows, then, that exclusive information is mo re persuasive than widely available data.16 Experiments have confirmed the assumption of many executives.A rightB WrongC Not mentioned17 People are more likely to cooperate with those who like them.A rightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Managers do not employ those who are quite different from them.A rightB WrongC Not mentioned19 There is no need for a manager to find out the merits of his employees.A rightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Experiments have shown that, contrary to our expectation, people tend to treat you the way you treat them.A rightB WrongC Not mentioned21 There are as many wise managers as there are stupid ones.A rightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Exclusive information is more persuasive than widely known data. Keeping Cut Flowers1 While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people kno w how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts.2 An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensiti ve to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations<康乃馨> retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12oC than when kept at 2 60c. Keeping freshly harvested flowers at the right temperatures is probably th e most important aspect of flower care.3 Flowers are not intended by nature to live very long. Their biological pu rpose is simply to attract birds or insects, such as bees, for pollination <授粉>. After that, they quickly dry up and die. The process by which flowers cons ume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide <二氧化碳>, called respiration <呼吸>, ge nerates the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and colour. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is v ery high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies.4 How, then, to control the rate at which flowers die? By controlling respi ration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature. We know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse is also true. Thus by maintaining l ow temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowl y.5 Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water i n which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to "drink〞 water that is di rty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost ce rtainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the w ater of these unwanted substances, household chlorine bleach <含氯漂白剂> can b e used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach< at 4% solution> be added to each litre of water. The water and solution should also be replaced each day.A Control of RespirationB Beauty of Fresh Cut FlowersC Role of RespirationD Most Important Aspect of Flower CareE Need for Clean WaterF Ways of Stopping Respiration23 Paragraph 2__________________24 Paragraph 3__________________25 Paragraph 4__________________26 Paragraph 5__________________27 A few simple facts will help you keep cut flowers_______________28 Respiration plays a key role________________29 The aging of cut flowers can be slowed down_________________30 Another important way to prolong the life of cut flowers is ____________ ________A by keeping its original shape and colourB in the life of the cut flowerC to produce carbon dioxideD for as long as possibleE by controlling temperatureF to replace the water and solution every day第4部分:阅读理解〔第31~45题,每题3分,共45分〕下面有3篇短文,每篇短文后有5道题,每道题后面有4个选项.请根据文章的内容,从每题所给的4个选项中选择个最佳答案,涂在答题卡相应的位置上.第一篇 "Salty〞 Rice Plant Boosts HarvestsBritish scientists are breeding a new generation of rice plants that will b e able to grow in soil containing salt water. Their work may enable abandoned f arms to become productive once more.Tim Flowers and Tony Yeo, from Sussex University’s School of Biological Sc iences, have spent several years researching how crops, such as rice, could be made to grow in water that has become salty. The pair have recently begun a three-year programme, funded by the Biotechn ology and Biological Sciences Research Council, to establish which genes enable some plants to survive salty conditions. The aim is to breed this capability i nto crops, starting with rice.It is estimated that each year more than 10m hectares〔公顷〕 of agricultur al land are lost because salt gets into the soil and stunts〔妨碍生长〕plants. The problem is caused by several factors. In the tropics, mangroves〔红树林〕 t hat create swamps〔沼泽〕 and traditionally formed barriers to sea water have b een cut down. In the Mediterranean, a series of droughts have caused the watertable to drop, allowing sea water to seep〔渗透〕in. in Latin America, irrigati on often causes problems when water is evaporated〔蒸发〕 by the heat, leaving salt deposits behind.Excess salt then enters the plants and prevents them functioning normally. A historian a century from now might well conclude that it was Ford who most influenced all manufacturing, everywhere, e ven to this day, by introducing a new way to make cars-one, strange to say, tha t originated in slaughterhouses〔屠宰场〕.Back in the early 1900‘s, slaughterhouses used what could have been called a "disassembly line〞. Ford reversed this process to see if it would speed up p roduction of a part of an automobile engine called a magneto. Rather than have each worker completely assemble a magneto, one of its elements was placed on a conveyer, and each worker, as it passed, added another component to it, the same one each time. Professor David Hounshell of the University of Delaware, an ex pert on industrial development, tells what happened."The previous day, workers carrying out the entire process had averaged one assembly every 20 minutes. But on that day, on the line, the assemble team ave raged one every 13 minutes and 10 seconds per person.〞Within a year, the time had been reduced to five minutes. In 1913, Ford wen t all the way. Hooked together by ropes, partially assembled vehicles were towe d〔拖,拉〕past workers who completed them one piece at a time. It hasn‘t long before Ford was turning out several hundred thousand cars a year, a remarkable achievement then. And so efficient and economical was this new system that he c ut the price of his cars in half, to $260, putting them within reach of all tho se who, up until that time, could not afford them. Soon, auto makers the world over copied him. In fact, he encouraged them to do so by writing a book about a ll of his innovations, entitled Today and Tomorrow. The Age of the Automobile h as arrived. Today, aided by robots and other forms of automation〔自动化〕, eve rything from toasters to perfumes is made on assembly lines.36 Which of the following statements about Henry Ford is NOT true?A He introduced a new way of production.B He influenced all manufacturing.C He inspired other auto makers.D He changed a historian’s mind.37 The writer mentions〞 slaughterhouses〞 because they were the places whe reA Ford’s assembly line originatedB Ford made his first car.C Ford readjusted the assembly line.D Ford innovated the disassembly line.38 A magneto is a technical term forA an automobile.B a production lineC a part of an automobile engine.D a disassembly line39 the phrase〞 turning out〞 in the last paragraph could be best replaced byA " producing〞B " selling〞C "buying〞D "fixing〞40 The invention of the assembly line enabled Henry FordA to create more jobs for the unemployedB to write a book on historyC to reduce the price of his cars to $260D to cut the production of his cars by 50%第三篇 PlayPlay is the principal business of childhood, and in recent years research h as shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy, every child needs opportunity and the right materials for pl ay, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main function is to suggest, enc ourage and assist play. To succeed in this they must be good toys, which childr en will play with often, and will come back to again and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s developme nt.In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities, is lar gely determined in the first three years of his life. So a baby’s ability to p rofit from the right play materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged and stimulated, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully. In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toy should be made available to the child, for trying o ut, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability. Bri cks and jigsaws〔七巧板〕and construction toys; painting, scribbling<涂鸦> and making things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play; t he first social games for learning to play and get on with others.Bt the third stage of play development-from five to seven or eight years-th e child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of le arning, at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the chills most enjoys.Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a chil d. But once reading has been mastered, then books and school become the main so urce of learning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, they lead on to new hobbies, but their significance has changed-to a child of nice or ten years, to ys and games mean, as to adults, relaxation and fun.41 The passage tells us that as a child grows upA he should be allowed to choose his own toys.B he should be given identical toys.C he should be given different toys.D he should be given fewer and fewer toys.42 According to the passage, the abilities a child has inherited from his p arentsA determine his characterB will not change after the age of three.C partly determine the standard he is likely to reach.D to a large extent determine the choice of toys.43 Who have the best chance of growing up successfully?A Those who tend to overeatB Those who are given a lot of toys.C Those who are given toys, talked to and played with.D Those who can share their toys with their playmates.44 We learn from the passage that a child has boundless curiosityA when he is twoB when he is around four.C when he is six.D when he is eight.45 The passage is mainly aboutA the importance of pre-school educationB the importance of schooling.C the role of play in a child’s developmentD the choice of toys for adolescents. Science and TechnologyThere is a difference between science and technology._________<46>. 历年职称英语《综合类》考试真题及答案历年职称英语《综合类》考试真题及答案Some people seem to have a knack for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules or grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others, so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners, we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from mistakes.Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they areinterested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly because they want to learn with it.What kind of language learner are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. On the other hand,if your language learning has been less than successful, you might as well try some of the techniques outlined above.1. Paragraph 1__________2. Paragraph 2__________3. The largest, a magnitude(量)5.6 quake, shook thousands of fans in a college football stadium, caused cracks in a few buildings and scared many people who had never felt a quake before. Oklahoma is not an area of the country famous for its quakes. If you watch the news on TV, you see reports about all sorts of natural disasters. But the most dangerous type of natural disaster, and also the most unpredictable, is the earthquake.Researchers at the US Geological Survey(USGS)estimate that several million earthquakes occur globally each year. That may sound scary, but people don’t feel many of them because they happen in remote and unpopulated regions. Many quakes happen under the ocean, and others have a very small magnitude.Scientists know about small, remote quakes only because of very sensitive electronic devices called seismometers(地震仪). These devices detect and measure the size of ground vibrations(震颤)produced by earthquakes. Altogether, USGS researchers use seismometers to identify and locate about 20000 earthquakes each year. Although earthquakes can happen anywhere in the world, really big quakes occur only in certain areas. The largest ones register a magnitude 8 or higher and happen, on average, only once each year. Such big ones typically occur along the edges of Earth’s tectonic plates(构造板块).Thctonic plates are huge pieces of Earth’s crust(外壳), sometimes many kilometers thick. Often, edges of these plates temporarily lock together. When plates push and scrape(擦)past each other earthquakes occur. On average, tectonic plates move very slowly--bout the same speed as your fingernails grow. But sometimes earthquakes rumble(轰轰作响)through portions of the landscape far from a plate’s edges. Although less expected, these “mid-plate” small earthquakes can be stantial damage. Some of the biggest known examples hit the eastern half of the United States two centuries ago. Today, scientists are still puzzling over why the quakes occurred and when similar ones might occur.16. Oklahoma is an area often experiencing natural disasters.A. RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned17. A Dolphin and an AstronomerOne day in 1963, a dolphin named Elvar and a famous astronomer, Carl Sagan, were playing a little game. The astronomer was visiting an institute which was looking into the way dolphins communicate with each other. Sagan was standing on the edge of one of the tanks where several of these friendly, highly intelligent creatures were kept. Elvar had just swum up alongside him and had turned on his back. The dolphin wanted Sagan to scratch his stomach again, as the astronomer had done twice before. Elvar looked up at Sagan, waiting. Then, after a minute or so, the dolphin leapt up through the water and made a sound just like the word “more”. The astonished astronomer went to the director of the institute and told him about the incident. ‘Oh, yes. That’s one of the words he knows,’ the director said, showing no surprise at all.Dolphins have bigger brain in proportion to their body size than humans have, and it has been known for a long time that they can make a number of sounds. What is more, these sounds seem to have different functions, such as warning each other of danger. Sound travels much faster and much further in water than it does in air. That is why the parts of the brain that deal with sound are much better developed in do lphin than in humans. But can it be said that dolphins have a ‘language’, in the real sense of the word? Scientists don’t agree on this.A language is not just a collection of sounds, or even words. A language has a structure and what we call a grammar. The structure and grammar of a language help to give it meaning. For example, the two questions “Who loves Mary?” and “Who does Mary love?” mean very different things. If you stop to think about it, you will see that this difference doesn’t come from the words in the question but from the difference in structure. That is why the question “Can dolphins speak?” can’t be answered until we find out if dolphins not only make sounds but also arrange them in a grammatical order which affects their meaning.16 The astronomer was not interested in the way dolphins communicate with each other.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 The dolphin leapt up into the air because Sagan was too near the water.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Parts of t he dolphin’s brain are particularly well developed to handle different kinds of sound.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Dolphins are the most useful animals to humans.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Dolphins travel faster in water than any other animals.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 Some scientists believe that dolphins have a language of their own.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Sounds can be called a language only when they have a structure and a grammar.
