Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand – he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual artists like painter want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion (运动) and repose (休息), their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at,that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subject that provides an interesting pattern, that there is nothing morein it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a broken leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something –all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.61. According to the passage, an artist is always trying to ________.A)interest the public in shapes and colorsB)create something difficult for us to understandC)express something new to usD)make show of his unusual abilities62. It is much more difficult to understand a painting than a novel because ________.A)a painter only provides interesting patternsB) a painter is not good at expressing himselfC)a painter is less experienced or educated than a writerD)a painter uses shapes and colors instead of words63. A painter carefully chooses certain shapes and colors as ________.A)they express his feeling and experiencesB)they carry messages to the publicC)they can teach the publicD)they can express the painter’s feelings, carry messages and teach the public64. Paintings of unpleasant objects and paintings of beauty are ________.A)all trying to show us somethingB)of different art skillsC)of different art stylesD)of different acceptance to the public65. It is implied but not directly stated that ________.A)paintings are nothing more than the arrangement of shapes and colorsB)painters are no good at writingC)we should look beyond shapes and colors to understand what the artist is driving atD)the public is more interested in writing than in paintingPassage TwoQuestions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:I don’t get five good, genuine, p ersonal letters a year. The time is coming when the letter written with pen and ink and sent as a personal message from one person to another will be as much of a rarity (rare) as the gold pocket watch carried on a chain. It’s a shame. There is something s pecial about a personal letter. It’s better than a phone call, no matter what the telephone company says. A phone call disappears into the air as soon as the receiver is put back on the hook. A good letter can last a lifetime. Some of my most precious possessions are letters that have been written to me sometime in the past. I don’t have a single memorable phone call stored in a box in my attic (阁楼) or basement. I’ve never thrown away a g ood letter and, like any real treasure, I don’t even have to look at them to enjoy having them. I know I have them. The telephone calls come and go. They make no permanent impression on me and have no place in my memory.A personal letter is a good thing because you say things you can’t say in a crowd and might not even say to the person faceto face. If you feel like it, a letter allows you to take yourself and your thoughts more seriously than you would dare take them in conversation. And you can say things without interruption.A good letter is, in many ways, the exact opposite of a political speech. A politicianaddressing a crowd has to talk so broadly and generally about the issues in order not to offend any one of the thousands of people listening that he usually ends up saying nothing. A letter can be specific, and if the writer has some bias (偏见) or prejudice, he can even reveal his true self by letting this show. Writing a friend, you don’t have to be careful. Abraham Lincoln’s letter to his step-br other telling him he wasn’t going to loan him the eighty dollars he asked for tells you more about Abraham Lincoln than the Gettysburg Address does. Some of our best history has come that way, from personal letters of famous people that scholars have dug up. You get a better idea of what someone is really like from a personal letter they weren’t expecting you to read than you get from a carefully considered public statement they’ve made. We say real things in letters.66. What is a shame according to the author?A) People sometimes write letters with pen and ink.B) People hardly carry a gold pocket watch.C) People never receive any personal letters.D) People rarely send any personal letters.67. What’s the main idea of paragraphs 2 and 3?A) What a good personal letter is.B) What advantages personal letters have.C) Why people don’t write personal letters.D) Why writing personal letters is so special.68. What do ―issues‖ in paragraph 5 mean?A) The key points of a political speech.B) The speaker’s bia s and prejudice.C) Problems that the audiences have.D) Questions that arise for discussion.69. Why does the author use Abraham Lincoln’s example?A) To show that a political address has to be general.B) To show that letter writing sometimes offends people.C) To show that people say real things in personal letters.D) To show that even a great man has his dark side.70. What’s the best word to describe t he tone of the author?A) Objective.B) Persuasive.C) Humorous.D) Ironic.Passage 3Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:People who have to fly all the time for business usually find it boring. People who fly only once in a while are excited. However, some people feel only terror when they board an airplane. They suffer from a phobia, an illogical fear.We always hear about a plane crash, but we don’t hear about the millions of flights every year that are safe. Riding in a car is thirty times more dangerous than flying, but most of us are not afraid every time we get into a car. It is not logical to be afraid of flying, but research shows thatabout 12 percent of people have this fear.People with a phobia about flying are afraid for one or more reasons. They are afraid of heights. They avoid high places, and if they are in a high-rise building, they don’t look out thewindows. They might be afraid of being in an enclosed place like an elevator or tunnel on a highway. When they get on an airplane, they can’t get out until the end of the flight, and the flight might last for hours.Maybe they are afraid of the crowds and all the noise and people rushing around at an airport. This especially bothers old people. Some people are afrai d of the unknown. They don’t understand the technology of flying and can’t believe that a huge airplane can stay up in the air.Others are afraid of loss of control. They need to control every situation they are in. When they drive a car, they have some chance of avoiding an accident. In an airplane they have no control over anything. It terrifies them to give up control to the pilot and the rest of the crew.71. What does the author think of flying?A) It is very boring.B) It is extremely dangerous.C) It is very frightening.D) It is relatively safe.72. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word ―phobia‖?A) Extreme boredom. C) Great excitement.B) Unreasonable fear. D) Strong dislike.73. Who is NOT suffering from a phobia?A) A person who’s afraid of height.B) A person who feels horror in an elevator.C) A person who feels frightened when walking in a tunnel.D) A person who’s terrified to see an air crash.74. Why do many people feel that driving a car is safer thanflying?A) Because the car makes no noises.B) Because they have a sense of control while driving.C) Because fewer people die in car accidents.D) Because they have never had car accidents.75. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A) Boring FlightsB) Flying SafetyC) Fear of FlyingD) Better to DrivePart V Translation from English into Chinese (15 points)Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined parts, numbered 76 to 80. After reading the passage carefully, you should translate the underlined parts into Chinese.Remember to write your translation on the Translation Sheet. If one person can be said to have led the world into the age of technology it was Thomas Alva Edison. 76) Not only did he invent and perfect many of the technologies vital to the modern world, he also set the standard for how research and development is done today.Edison was guided by his belief that genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. Consequently, he worked day and night for much of his life. By the time he died in 1931, he had patented over 1,100 inventions. 77) Some were his own, but many were improvements he had made to the inventions of others.Few of Edison’s most useful inven tions were entirely original. 78) Instead, he concentrated much of his time and effort on improving existing products. One was the telephone. 79)Alexander Graham Bell invented it, but it was Edison who improved the range and clarity of this instrument so it could be put to practical use by ordinary people.80) Moreover, some of the inventions attributed to Edison had already been invented. One example is the light bulb -- or more correctly, the incandescent filament electric lamp. This was first demonstrated in London in 1878 by its English inventor, Joseph Wilson Swan. However, when Edison demonstrated his light bulb in the US the following year, it was he who was credited for giving the world electric light.76.他不仅发明并完善了许多对现代世界至关重要的技术,他还为今天如何进行研究、开发设定了标准。

I knew that my Dad loved me, but getting all mushy-eyed was not his thing. I learned that he showed me he loved me in other ways. There was one particular moment when this became real to me…我的父亲是一个多愁善感的人。
我不记得他曾经不住发出“喔”“啊”的喊叫声,像是我作为一个孩子。

It is attractive, simple and a little strange. The Millennium Dome (千禧穹顶) is a huge semi-circle of plastic and steel and it contains the largest public space in the world. It has been built to house an exhibition of all that is best in British life, learning and leisure. The Millennium Dome was designed by Sir Richard Rogers, one of Britain’s most famous architects. His work points the way to new developments in building. Think of it as a giant symbol of the buildings in which we will all be living and working in the near future.Buildings are also a part of history. They express the culture of the times. Sir Richard Rogers is aware of this responsibility. While different designers have individual styles, their work also has a common style. That is: to express the values of the information age. What is an “information age” building? The Dome is a good example. After the Millennium exhibition ends, it will be used for another purpose. Just as people no longer have “jobs for life”, modern buildings are designed for a number of different uses.Another Richard Roger’s building, the Pompidou Center in France, uses the idea that information is communication. Instead of being hidden in the walls, heating pipes and elevators are open to public view. The Pompidou Center is a very honest building. It tells you how it works.31. The Millennium Dome has been originally built to hold an exhibition _______ .A)of different building designsB)of everything that can draw the attention of peopleC)of the finest things in BritainD)of recent developments in information technology32. The sentence “His work points the way to new developments in building” (Line 2, Para 2) implies that the designer Sir Rich ard Rogers ________ .A)has developed a new set of building standardsB)strictly follows the tradition in his workC)is a pioneer architect of his ageD)is quite different from other architects33. Sir Richard Rogers clearly knows that it is his duty to ________ .A)create something out of a unique styleB)house those who will often change their jobsC)make his buildings historic onesD)construct a building that can express the culture of the modern age34. The Pompidou Center in France is outstanding in the fact that ________ .A)people in it are able to visit each other convenientlyB)visitors can see clearly the structure and facilities of the whole buildingC)it makes use of the best techniques invented in the information ageD)it was designed and built by an honest British designer35. The passage mainly tells us about ________ .A)the unique contribution of a famous architectB) a few developments in house-buildingC)the common features of British and French buildingsD)modern buildings of various stylesPassage 2Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:The Library of Congress is Americ a’s national library. It has millions of books and other objects. It has newspapers, popular publications and letters of historical interest. It also has maps, photographs, art prints, movies, sound recordings and musical instruments. Altogether, it has more than one-hundred-million objects. The Library of Congress is open to the public Monday through Saturday, except for government holidays. Anyone may go there and read anything in the collection. But no one is permitted to take books out of the building. The Library of Congress was established in 1800. It started with eleven boxes of books in one room of the Capitol building. By 1814, the collection had increased to about three-thousand books. They were all destroyed that year when the Capitol was burned during America’s war with Britain. To help re-build the library, Congress bought the books of President Thomas Jefferson. Mister Jefferson’s collection included seven-thousand books in seven languages. In 1897, the Library moved into its own building, across the street from the Capitol. Today, three buildings hold the library’s collection. The Library of Congress provides books and materials to the United States Congress. It also lends books to other American libraries, government agencies and foreign libraries. It buys some of its books and gets others as gifts. It also gets materials through its copyright office. Anyone who wants copyright protection for a publication in the United States must send two copies to the library. This means the Library of Congress receives almost everything that is published in the United States.36. No one goes through life unharmed. We can only hope that our failures will be mixed with our successes, and we will have had a life well lived.Still, while there are no guarantees that you never fail, there are ways in which you can turn the odds (机会) more in your favor. Specifically, success is most closely related to your reaction to your unavoidable failures. This is true not only for you personally, but also in your role as a business manager and leader. When an organization is trying something new, mistakes are unavoidable. It is up to the leader to create an environment where peopl e aren’t afraid to fail. Mistakes should be seen as a necessary part of the organizational process. Errors are simply a norma l by-product of pursuing excellence.Obviously, some mistakes are easier to tolerate (容忍) than others. Action should be taken when an error is made, but, usually, it should be corrective action rather than blame. Mistakes present a unique opportunity to teach and develop your staff. Growth and success can’t come without risk taking, and progress doesn’t happen without mistakes. As a leader, one of the ways I’ve approached errors is by judging whether the action taken was a “mistake of the heart” or a “mistake of the head”. A mistake of the heart is a situation where such an employee does something wrong on purpose and tries to get away with it. I tend to be very serious in such situations. A mistake of the head happens when an employee is working hard to do the right thing, but for some reason, it doesn’t turn out that way. I tend do be very lenient (宽容的) on these types of mistakes. In fact, I have even praised people for making a mistake because their intentions were so good. The goal for a leader isn’t to avoid all possible failures. It’s to avoid errors that can be easily predicted, as well as risks that aren’t worth the possible costs. Good leaders are willing to take risks to improve their operations. If you never try anything new, you can’t possibly hope to improve. This is true for individuals, and it’s true for organizations.41. The passage is chiefly intended to give advice to ________ .A) business leaders B) the average manC) employees D) losers42. What is the author’s overall attitude toward failures?A)Failures naturally lead to successes.B)We can often predict failures and avoid them.C)We should try our best to avoid failures because they are very harmful.D)Failures may be unavoidable, but we can learn to benefit from them.43. According to the passage, it is essential that an organization leader should ________ .A)be strict with any mistakesB)put up with any mistakesC)pay no attention to the employee’s mistakesD)take a corrective attitude towards mistakes44. The phrase “get away with” (Line 3, Para 5) could probably mean “________”.A) get rid of B) do without being punishedC) correct D) stick to45. The author illustrates his viewpoint by ________ .A)introducing his own experienceB)giving examples which are set by other peopleC)pointing out the harm of mistakesD)making a comparison between successes and failuresSection BDirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. 学位英语机考有五段英译汉
学位英语机考有五段英译汉In today's fast-paced world, where globalization and technological advancements continue to reshape various aspects of our lives, the importance of proficiency in English has become increasingly evident. One significant arena where this proficiency is crucial is in the pursuit of academic degrees, especially in non-English speaking countries. With the rise of globalization, the demand for English proficiency assessments, such as the English proficiency tests for academic purposes, has surged. These tests aim to evaluate individuals' ability to comprehend and communicate effectively in English, particularly in academic settings. Here, we delve into the significance and structure of one such assessment: the Academic English Proficiency Test. The Academic English Proficiency Test, commonly known as the AEPT, serves as a standardized measure to assess individuals' English language skills, specifically tailored for academic contexts. This test typically comprises five sections, each designed to evaluate different language competencies: listening, reading, writing, speaking, and translation. The listening section of the AEPT assesses candidates' ability to understand spoken English in academic settings, such as lectures, seminars, and discussions. Test-takers are required to listen to audio recordings of academic lectures or conversations and answer comprehension questions based on the content. In the reading section, candidates encounter passages on various academic topics and are tasked with comprehending and analyzing the information presented. This section evaluates not only reading comprehension but also the ability to infer meaning, identify main ideas, and grasp the overall structure of the text. The writing component of the AEPT assesses candidates' ability to articulate their ideas clearly and coherently in written English. Test-takers are typically required to compose essays or reports on academic topics, demonstrating proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, organization, and argumentation. The speaking section evaluates candidates' oral communication skills in academic contexts. Test-takers may be asked to participate in simulated academic discussions, deliver presentations, or engage in spoken interactions with examiners. This section assesses fluency, pronunciation, coherence, and the ability to express ideas effectively.Lastly, the translation section of the AEPT evaluates candidates' proficiency in translating texts between English and their native language. This component assesses not only language proficiency but also cultural and contextual understanding, as translations must accurately convey the meaning and nuances of the original text.Overall, the Academic English Proficiency Test plays a vital role in assessing individuals' readiness to pursue academic studies in an English-speaking environment. By evaluating listening, reading, writing, speaking, and translation skills, this test provides a comprehensive measure of candidates' English language proficiency, ensuring that they possess the necessary linguistic abilities to succeed in academic endeavors. As English continues to be the lingua franca of academia and professional spheres worldwide, proficiency in this language is indispensable for individuals seeking to excel in their academic pursuits and thrive in an increasingly interconnected global community.。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:There are some steps you can take yourself to avoid catching a cold.Contrary to popular belief, colds are not caused by exposure to severe weather. Colds are caused by viruses hidden in the body, and you’re better off out o n the ski slopes or even waiting for the bus on a snowy day than you are in a warm room, surrounded by friends, co-workers, or fellow students, who just may be passing the virus around. If you feel a chill when you’recoming down with a cold, you’re alread y sick. A chill is an early symptom: it’s the c old that caused the chill, not the other way around. While the virus can spread by air when a cold-sufferer coughs or sneezes (打喷嚏), surprisingly, this is not the most common route of transmission. Numerous studies have now shown that most colds are ―caught‖ by hand contact.A cold-sufferer rubs her nose, thereby transferring the virus to her hand. Then a friend comes to visit. ―Don’t kiss me,‖ she warns, so the friend steps back and presses her hand. The friend then wipes her own nose or eye – and several days later caught a cold. Parents pick up their child’s discarded tissues and carefully throw them away, but fail to wash their hands afterward.Cold viruses also can be transferred to objects –telephones, towels, plates –and remain infectious for up to three hours. Frequent hand washing on the part of the cold-sufferer as well as other members of the household – will minimize the spread of viruses in this way.61. Which of the following will most probably cause you to catch a cold?A)Staying in a warm room with a lot of people.B)Staying outdoors on a cold day.C)Staying on the ski slopes.D)Waiting for the bus on a snowy day.62. Which of the following is TRUE?A)Colds are caused by exposure to severe weather.B)Viruses can only spread through air.C)Viruses hidden in the body cause colds.D)Most colds can be caught by hand contact.63. To prevent viruses from spreading, we should ________.A)shake hands with our friends instead of kissing themB)stay at home as much as possibleC)often wash our handsD)often clean our noses and eyes64. The word discarded in Paragraph 2 most probably means ________.A)thrown awayB)put awayC)cleared awayD)given away65. The best title for this passage might be ________.A) Colds and VirusesB) Ways to Avoid Catching ColdsC) The Spread of Cold VirusesD) Symptoms of ColdsPassage 2Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:America is a society in which children have watched approximately 18,000 television commercials (广告) by the time they have reached their middle teens. My friend Jolie learned this fact a few weeks ago and decided to do something about it.She thinks that the number of commercials that children see can influence the way they view the world. That is, Jolie believes that children who watch so many advertisements will grow up to believe that the most important thing in life is to buy, buy, buy! This, says Jolie, is wrong. A little child cannot understand advertisements for what they are and so believes totally in what he or she hears.I have been thinking about what Jolie has told me. I suppose that she is right. I know that it is easy to manipulate the minds ofchildren because they don’t see things logically, as adults do. And I am upset myself at how the advertisers can control a child’s outlook on the world. I think I should join Jolie in her efforts to change advertising tactic (策略) when it comes to advertisements for children. I really have a responsibility to make sure that future generations are given every chance to develop their minds without the interference of mass media.Of course, there is another side to the issue. After all, parents ought to take responsibility for what their children watch and how much television they see. I know that many parents just want their children to be quiet, and so they let them watch as much television as they want. But, in the long run, the methods of advertisers have enormous power because we are a society of consumers.I only hope that some day there can be a solution to this problem. Children need our guidance, not the guidance of advertisers.66. What does ―it‖ in Line 3 refer to?A) The number of commercials children watch.B) The way children view the world.C) The fact that children are exposed to so many TV commercials.D) The negative influence of television programs on children67. Jolie believes that ________.A)television advertising is only for childrenB)television advertising has a bad influence on childrenC)there are enough advertisements on TVD)television advertising should be banned68. Being exposed to so many commercials children may ________.A)have bought lots of toysB)see things as adults doC)be misled by these advertisementsD)learn the methods of advertisers69. The word ―manipulate‖ in the second paragraph most probably means ________.A)advertiseB)purchaseC)controlD)buy70. What is the author’s attitude towards the large number of TV commercials that childrenwatch?A) Concerned.C) Positive.B) Hopeful. D) Disappointed.Passage ThreeQuestions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:Vegetarians may be healthier, but meat eaters do more for the environment. A survey of the energy used to produce and distribute various foods shows that such foods as sweets, ice cream, potato chips and white bread are among the most energy-efficient -- and so least polluting -- foods in our diet. Tea, coffee, tomatoes, salad vegetables and white fish, on the other hand, are environmentally unfriendly.David Coley and colleagues of the Center for Energy and the Environment at the University of Exeter have analyzed how much energy from fuel is used in the complete production cycle of food in a typical shopping basket. The analysis includes the manufacture and application of fertilizers and other chemicals, harvesting, processing, packaging, transport and waste disposal. In a study of the diets of more than 2,000 people, they found that it takes around 18,000 megajoules (兆焦耳) of energy each year to get a typical Briton’s food to the table. This is alm ost six times the energy contained in the food itself. In all, the process consumes almost a tenth of the national energy budget, adding 15 million tons of carbon to the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide. The study will trouble those trying to be both healthy and green. The most energy-consuming item is coffee, which requires 177MJ of energy to produce 1MJ of food intake. But typical salad vegetables require 45 MJ and white fish 36, compared to 8 MJ for beef and burgers, 7 for chicken and 6 for lamb, while fresh fruit consumes between 10 and 22 MJ, crisps, white bread and ice cream are all right at the bottom of the table, consuming less than 1 MJ each.―Meat does well because it is not highly processed, provides a lot of calories and is often grown l ocally,‖ says Coley. In a sense, food is a large part of an individual’s impact on the greenhouse effect. Many of us could change our diets to have less impact.71. The most energy-efficient and least polluting food in our diet is ________.A) meatB) fruitC) white breadD) salad vegetables72. Dr. Coley’s analysis of energy used in the production cycle of food includes all of thefollowing EXCEPT ________.A) application of chemicalsB) the influence of climateC) packaging of foodD) waste disposal73. In a study of the diet of more than 2,000 people, Dr. Coley found that ________.A) the energy contained in the food itself is six times the energy consumedB) energy budget adds 15 million tons of carbon to the atmosphereC) the food a typical Briton consumes each year requires 18,000 MJ to produceD) the energy contained in the food itself is a tenth of the national energy budget74. Those who try to be both healthy and green are troubled when they know that ________.A) some healthy foods, like tomatoes, are not greenB) local meat is better for health than green foodC) people’s diets vary greatlyD) some healthy foods are environmentally unfriendly75. The author suggests that ________.A) we change our diets to have less influence on greenhouse effectB) we grow vegetables to reduce the greenhouse effectC) we eat more meat to help the development of modern food industryD) we eat more vegetables in order to become healthierPart ⅤTranslation from English into Chinese (15 points)Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined parts, numbered 76 to 80. You shouM decide onthe best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through thecenter.Passage 1Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:The failed Skylab will come screaming home to earth in disappointment sometime next month, but it will fall we know not where. That precise information is beyond even the calculations of scientists and their computers. The best they can tell us is that the space station, weighing 77 tons and as high as a 12-story building, will break into hundreds of pieces that will be scattered across a track 100 miles wide and 4,000 miles long. We are again exposed to one of those unexpected adventures, or misadventures, of science that attracts our attention from the boring routines of daily existence and encourages us to think a lot about man‟s future. What worries Richard Smith, the Skylab‟s director, is the …big pieces‟ that will come through the atmosphere. Two lumps, weighing 2 tons each, and ten, weighing at least 1,000 pounds each, will come in at speeds of hundreds of miles an hour, and if they crash on land they will dig holes up to 100 feet deep. What worries us, with our lack of scientific knowledge and our quick imagination, is both the big and little pieces, although project officials say there is a very small chance that anyone will be injured by them. That‟s good to know, but it doesn‟t remove the doubts of the millions who still remember the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. That accident took place in I979 in spite of what scientists had assured us as to the safety of the nuclear reactor.61. We can conclude from the passage that where the Skylab will fall_______.A) is still kept secret B) will be announced soonC) is predicted by computers D) can‟t be predicted at present62. The broken Skylab will be_______.A) falling with the force of a 12-story building B) in two lumps, weighing more than 1,000 pounds eachC) an attractive scientific adventure to millions of peopleD) scattered across a track I00 miles wide and 4,000 miles long63. It can be inferred from the passage that_______.A) the danger of the Skylab‟s fall has been overestimatedB) the danger of the Skylab‟s fall has been underestimatedC) it‟s useless to worry over things you can‟t do anything aboutD) computers can solve the problem caused by the broken Skylab64. Three Mile Island was mentioned _______.A) because the author is afraid of nuclear accident thereB) because the author doesn‟t believe in the officials‟ wordsC) because the broken Skylab was as safe as the nuclear reactorD) because the author fears that the Skylab may strike a nuclear power plant65. The author expresses his _______.A) willingness to give his advice B) doubtful attitude toward scientistsC) interest in the failure of the Skylab D) eagerness to see more new scientific discoveries Passage 2Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:Children are a relatively modem invention. Until a few hundred years ago they looked like adults, wearing grown-up clothes and grown-up expressions, performing grown-up tasks in Renaissance (文艺复兴时期) paintings. Children did not exist because the family as we know it had not evolved.Children today not only exist; they have taken over, in no place more than in America, and at no time more than now. It is always Kid‟s Country here. Our civilization is child-centered, child-obsessed. A kid‟s body is our physical ideal. In Kid‟s Country we do not permit middle-aged. Thirty is promoted over 50, but 30 knows that soon his time to be overtaken will come.We are the first society in which parents expect to learn from their children. Such a topsy-turvy (颠三倒四的) situation has come into being at least in part because, unlike the rest of the world, ours is an immigrant (移民) society, and for immigrants the only hope is in the kids. In the Old Country, that is, Europe, hope was in the father, and how much wealth he could accumulate and pass along to his children. In the growth pattern of America and its ever-expanding frontier, the young man was ever advised to GO WEST; the father was ever inheriting from his son. Kid‟s Country may be the inevitable result.Kid‟s Country is not all bad. America is the greatest country in the world to grow up in because it is Kid‟sCountry. We not only wear kids‟ clothes and eat kids‟ food; we dream kids‟ dreams and make them come true. It was, after all, a boys‟ game to go to the moon.If in the old days children did not exist, it seems equally true today that adults, as a class, have begun to disappear, forcing all of us to remain boys and girls forever, jogging and doing push-ups against eternity.66. The Renaissance paintings are cited to show that _______.A) children looked and acted like adults at that timeB) children paid much more respect to adults then than they do nowC) children were not permitted to appear in other paintings at that timeD) children were smaller and thinner at that time, but they still had lots of work to do67. The difference between “the Old Country” and America lies mainly in _______.A) the geography B) the family sizeC) the attitudes towards family relations D) the economic relations between generations68. Going to the moon is an example of _______.A) why America hasn‟t grown up B) America‟s dreams and creativityB) America‟s childish and their strange behaviorD) why America is considered the greatest country in the world69. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A) The majority of the American population is children.B) It is very difficult for the middle-aged to live in America.C) America is more of Kid‟s Country than any other countries in the world.D) Kid‟s Country was taking shape in America when immigrants poured into the country.70. By saying “forcing all of us to remain boys and girls forever, jogging and doing push-ups against eternity”, theauthor means that _______.A) people shouldn‟t be so concerned about physical fitnessB) Americans are too old and tired to do such hard exerciseC) American society is overemphasizing youth and physical appearanceD) what happened to children centuries ago may happen to adults in America soonPassage 3Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:In the late 1960‟s, many people in North America turned their attention to environmental problems, and new steel-and-glass skyscrapers were widely criticized. Ecologists pointed out that a cluster of tall buildings in a city often overburdens public transportation and parking lot capacities.Skyscrapers are also lavish (过分大方地) consumers, and wasters, of electric power. In one recent year, the addition of 17 million square feet of skyscraper office space in New Y ork City raised the peak daily demand for electricity by 120,000 kilowatts—enough to supply the entire city of Albany, New Y ork, for a day.Glass-walled skyscrapers can be especially wasteful. The heat loss or gain through a wall of half-inch plate glass is more than ten times that through a typical masonry (石造建筑) wall filled with insulation (绝缘) board. To lessen the strain on heating and air-conditioning equipment, builders of skyscrapers have begun to use double-glazed panels of glass, and reflective glasses coated with silver or gold mirror films that reduce glare as well as heat gain. However, mirror-walled skyscrapers raise the temperature of the surrounding air and affect neighboring buildings.Skyscrapers put a severe strain on a city‟s sanitation (公共卫生) facilities, too. Skyscrapers also interfere with television reception, block bird flyways, and obstruct air traffic. In Boston in the late 1960‟s, some people even feared that shadows from skyscrapers would kill the grass on Boston Common.Still, people continue to build skyscrapers for all the reasons that they have always built them—personal ambition, civic pride, and the desire of owners to have the largest possible amount of rentable space.71. What‟s the main purpose of the passage?A) To compare skyscrapers with other modem structures.B) To illustrate some architectural designs of skyscrapers.C) To describe skyscrapers and their effect on the environment.D) To support the use of masonry in the construction of skyscrapers.72. According to the passage, what is one disadvantage of skyscrapers that have mirrored walls?A) The exterior surrounding air is heated. B) Extra air-conditioning equipment is needed.C) The construction time and cost are increased.D) They produce more glare for those inside the skyscrapers.73. According to the passage, in the late 1960‟s which aspect of skyscrapers were some residents of Bostonconcerned with?.A) The noise from their construction. B) The harmful effects on the city‟s grass.C) The high cost of rentable office space. D) The removal of trees from building sites.74. Which of the following groups would be most concerned with the issues that the author raises?A) Gardeners. B) Manufacturers. C) Electricians. D) Environmentalists.75. What is one of the reasons that people continue to build skyscrapers?A) To gain more profits. B) To save parking lot capacities.C) To save more energy. D) To improve a city‟s sanitation facilities.Part V Translation from English into Chinese (15 points)Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined parts, numbered 76 to 80.
