1). Retell the main ideas of the English passage in English.

Modern means of transportation, telecommunicatin and mass media have shortened the geographical distance of the world. The international community appears to be no more than a global village, in which peoples of all nations experience the inevitable cultural exchanges and clashes, while seeking common development in a harmonious and respectful relationship. In this modern world, the culture of any nation can not develop in isolation. And different cultures should learn from each others’ strengths to offset their own weaknesses. Of course, the culture of a nation must withhold its own distinctive national characteristics in its extensive exchange with other cultures. Cultural exchange, I think, is by no means a process of losing one’s own culture to

a foreign culture, but a process of enriching each other’s national cutures.

The west of China has already had some material basis. This, together with social stability and the gradual establishment and improvement of the market economic system, creates favorable environment for sustained and rapid economic development in the west. Chinese government persists in the developing policy of expanding domestic demand, implementing the expansion of domestic demand as the developing policy and combining it with adjusting the economic structure, advancing scientific progress and promoting opening up to the outside world. With the steady progression of the west development policy, the resource and economic advantages of the west will be brought to full play and the quality and economic level of economic growth will be further promoted.
