They need hundreds of hours of study and practice, and even this will not guarantee success for every adult language learner. What kind of language learner are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. In the United States, as in many other countries in the world, the family is changing. A generation or two ago, the traditional family, in which the father was boss, was customary. Now, the modern family, in which both the father and the mother are equal partners, is more common. Although there are several similarities betweenthe traditional family and the modern family, there also exist some very important differences. In conclusion, the American family of today is different from the family of fifty years ago. Inthe modern family, the roles of the father, mother, and children have changed as more and more women work outside the home. The next century may bring more important changesto the American family structure. It should be interesting to see.56. A generation or two ago, _ C. the traditional family_____, in which the father was boss, was customary.57.The similarities of the traditional family and the modern family are _ D. all of the above_.58.In the traditional family, ___C_______.C. the mother helped her children to get ready for school59.In the modern family, __D________.A.the father may do some of the household jobsB.the mother is doing two jobs instead of oneD.both A and B60.In the modern family, the roles of the father, mother and children have changed as__B_______.B.the mother works outside the homeSection B: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some true-false questions. Decide whether each of them is true (T) or false (F).Passage 3Though marriage is practiced in almost all countries of the world, the customs are quite different from one culture to another. It is interesting for me to compare the customs of marriage in the United States with those in my country.I’ve lived in the U.S. for four years now, but I ’m still not comfortable with the customs here. In fact, what seems strange to me is that courting or dating is not always for the purpose of finding a husband or wife. Some people seem to do it as a hobby.Though I can certainly see the advantages of the freedom that is given to American youths to choose whom they will marry and when, I think I still prefer the customs of my home country. I suppose that’s because there is not so much guessing and uncertainty.61. Marriage as a social form of male and female relationship exists in all countries of theworld, but customs of marriage vary from culture to culture.T62.As a custom in the U.S., it is the parents who decide when their daughter can have aboyfriend and who he should be. During the twentieth century there has b een a remarkable shortening of the proportion of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century world probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances and convenience foods. The important change in women’s life-pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago m ost girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, withboth husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.A 46. For women at the beginning of the twentieth century, the amount of time spent taking careof children ________.A) was shorter than in previous centuriesB) was longer than in previous centuriesC) was considered to be surprisingly longD) account for a great part of their livesA 47. When she was over fifty, the late nineteenth-century mother ________.A) would be healthy enough to take up paid employmentB) was usually expected to die fairly soonC) would expect to work until she diedD) was unlikely to find a job even if she wanted oneA 49. One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she ________.A) is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselvesB) does not like children herselfC) need not worry about food for her childrenD) can retire from family responsibilities when she reaches sixtyC 50. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A) stay at home after leaving schoolB) marry men younger than themselvesC) start working again later in lifeD) marry while still at schoolIV. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen.Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.Unfortunately, television’s influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the “television generations” are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn’t do funny things like the people on children’s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That’s the time it takes on the screen.46. In the past, many young people ______.A. knew the effects of warB. went in for politicsC. liked to save the wounded in warsD. were willing to be soldiers47. Now with TV people can _____.A. discuss politics at an information centerB. show more interest in politicsC. make their own decisions on political affairsD. express their opinions freely48. The author thinks that TV advertisements _____.A. are not reliable on the wholeB. are useless to peopleC. are a good guide to adultsD. are very harmful to the young49. Which is NOT true according to the passage?A. People have become used to crimes now.B. With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly.C. People now like to read books with picture.D.
