"Fingers were made before forks" when a person gives up good manners, puts aside knife and fork, and dives into his food, someone is likely to repeat that saying. The fork was an ancient agricultural tool, but for centuries no one thought of eating with it. Not until the eleventh century, when a young lady from Constantinople brought her fork to Italy, did the custom reach Europe. By the fifteenth century the use of the fork was widespread in Italy. The English explanation was that Italians were averse to eating food touched with fingers, "Seeing all men's fingers are not alike clean." English travelers kept their friends in stitches while describing this ridiculous Italian custom. Anyone who used a fork to eat with was laughed at in England for the next hundred years. Men who used forks were thought to be sissies, and women who used them were called show-offs and overnice. Not until the late 1600's did using a fork become a common custom. After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel becamea very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first award ceremony. Nobel’s original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards which vary from $30,000 to $125,000. Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death, the award s (gold medal, illuminated diploma, and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges’decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes. No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some people have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes. What role do you think EQ, IQ and MQ play in one’s success?B:what’your ideas about the key to success?IQ EQ MQ,which one is the most important?A:In my opinion ,IQ plays the most important role in our life, for eighteen years when we were studying in school, there must be a time when you are upset because offailing to work out a math problem or something,hard-working is not enough, a clever mind make things easier.A people with high IQ always do things effectively so people succeed or not depend on his IQ.that's my idea.B:I don’t agree with you.The reality will teach us that most guys succeed in the College Entrance Examination don’t succeed in their life at last. IQ is important, but it isn’t the key to success. EQ and MQ is important, the skill of how to get along with people plays a more important role after we graduated, many people succeed in college entrance examination don’t succeed in their life when they work. But many people failed the college entrance examination have their own company and make a lot of money,so i think it is IQ and MQ which make you succeed or not.A:That sounds reasonable.maybe they all play a important role, just as Mouse and keyboard of a computer. IQ EQ MQ are all required for being successful. And there is saying goes”the biggest, the smartest, the strongest are not the survivors,Rather, the survivors are the adaptable”, it shows the idea that EQ is important, too.Item TwoTask 1: Situational dialogue (3 minutes)A是校学生会Student Union的副主席vice chairman,B是校乐队school band的主唱lead singer。

For a practitioner of yoga, the progression through these stages is a movement from the physical toward a perfect mental state. There are eight major schools of yoga, each varying in its area of emphasis. The type of yoga that is taught in the West is mainly a combination of exercise and meditation called Hatha Yoga.Hatha Yoga is said to have a number of positive effects, such as reducing weight, strengthening muscles and nerves, cleaning out the body, and generally improving health and prolonging life.Recent decades have seen yoga gain widespread acceptance as a method of staying in shape, as well as a way of handling stress. Pop singer Madonna and supermodel Christy Turlington are just two of the many celebrities known to be strong advocates of yoga.At present, there is a lot of speculation and uncertainty about yoga and its effects. It was not yet eleven o'clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger who had obtained his transportation at that unusual hour by promising an extra fare. While the youth stood on the landing-place searching in his pocket for money, the ferry man lifted a lantern, by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a very accurate survey of the stranger’s figure. He was a young man of barely 18 years old, evidently the country breed, and now, as it seemed, on his first visit to the town. He was wearing a tough gray coat, which was in good shape, but which had seen many winters before this one. The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular legs; his stockings of blue yarn must have been the work of a mother or sister, and his head was a three-cornered hat, which in its better days had perhaps sheltered the grayer head of the lad’s father. In his left hand was a walking stick, and his equipment was completed by a leather bag not so abundantly stocked as to inconvenience the strong shoulders on which it hung. Brown, curly hair, well-shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature’s gifts, and worth all that art could have done for hisadornment. The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked, he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of the little metropolis of a New England colony. (15分)(1) The story took place in ______. Some people say that human beings are the only animals that have language. Is this true? It is a very difficult question to answer. A person must have a good definition of “language”. Different kinds of animals must be studied. Some animals certainly seem to have a communication system. That system may or may not be a language. For example, the bee has ways of telling other bees about food. The dolphin has ways of giving information to other dolphins. The monkey can use ahuman language system. Does this mean animals have language? The answer to this question depends on how “language” is defined. We may define language as any system for exchanging information. If this definition is used, then bees, dolphins, and monkeys all have a language. But language may be defined in another way. We may define language as a system for exchanging information by making new combinations of symbols. If this definition is used, then bees and dolphins do not have a language, but monkeys may have one. Monkeys are clearly able to combine symbols in a human language that they have been taught. This is not their usual language, however. (15分)(1) What do some animals seem to have according to the passage? Research shows that the average high school student will study four hours per week for any major test. The outcome of this four hours of study varies from an A to an F, which means in high school grades are strongly determined by intelligence since every one studies the same amount of time. But college is different. Most of the students are highly intelligent and each has plenty of time for self study. To score high on any test, a college student has to work hard and, probably more importantly, know how to use his or her time most efficiently. The problem is that your study habits formed in high school may makeyou unable to study well in college because you have never experienced what it takes to perform at the college level. That is why the freshman year is the hardest year for all college students.Based on my extensive observation of student performance on college tests., I recommended the following study time per test: 6 hours per week for an A,4 hours for a B, 3.5 hours for C, 2.5 hours for a D and 0 hours for a F. An hour of study is defined as studying for 45 minutes and break of 15 minutes. Ten hours of continuous study without a break is defined as one hour of study. The brain does not process and store information the way students prefer studying. Occasionally, some succeed by studying at the last minute, but they are exceptions to the rule.Research also suggests that the slowest 10 percent of the students may need 5 to 6 times as much time to learn the same material as the fastest 10 percent.
