命题人:谭雨清审题人:陈相泉I. 完形填空My mother seemed to be able to make dolls out of anything. She made some dolls for me and my two elder sisters. I 1 playing with them, but still, secretly, I hoped for a store-bought 2 like the one our rich cousin had. Her doll 3 open and close its blue glass eyes and even say "Mamma". I 4 stopped admiring it and hoping to have one. However, my dream 5 came true when I was six. One day my father came back from his business trip with three 6 dolls! They were much smaller than our cousin’s doll and their eyes were just painted ones, but I did not 7 such differences. They were 8 "store-bought" dolls. We each chose one and I named 9 Misako.Soon my sisters and I became devoted 10 . Our "children" kept us 11 all day. Their dolls were abandoned and in bad condition. One had 16 one of her arms, and 17 was one-legged. "You can 18 them if you want," my sisters said to me. Thus, I had 19 dolls. He was, as he put it, “not very bright” and couldn’t win the attention of his very wealthy parents, who preferred his “clever” older brother. At age 8, Horowitz was sent away to an abusive boarding school in his native England, even though he screamed and pleaded(恳求) with his parents year after year not to send him. “The thought was, ‘It’ll be good for him,’” he recalled. It was not. Horowitz did badly in his studie s, had few friends and was bullied for five years. “My teachers couldn't have had a lower opinion of me,” he said. “I wasn't even smart enough to rebel. The one thing I remember from the very earliest age was this desire to write. When I was 10 years old, I remember asking my parents to get me a typewriter for my birthday because I wanted to be a writer.”Now, at age of 55, Horowitz is one of the world's most successful children's book authors. His Alex Rider series has sold more than 5 million copies, and the eighth book featuring the young spy, Crocodile Tears, came out this month. The Alex Rider books tell the adventures of 14-year-old Alex Rider, an agent for the British intelligence agency M16.Horowitz said he doesn't try to write for kids; it just comes out that way. “I have a feeling it's todo with purity and simplicity. I give as little information as is necessary to describe the room, the character in the room, and get on with the action,” he said. The style has also made Horowitz a successful writer of television shows for adults in Britain because, he says, writing books for kids is a lot like writing television for grown-ups: In both cases, it's all about entertaining people with a good story. Now, Horowitz couldn't be happier with his life. He sums up his success: “…you can be anything you want to be if you just believe in yourself. I do believe it completely.”56. In the boarding school, Horowitz’s teachers ________.A. thought little about his abilityB. showed great concern for himC. taught him how to write storiesD. often criticized him57. Which of the following is true of Anthony Horowitz?A. He was the beloved child of his family.B. He benefited a lot from boarding school.C. He emphasizes the plot rather than characters in stories.D. Although he is successful, he isn’t very happy.58. What advice does Horowitz have for readers?A. Interest is the best teacher.B. Hardship teaches valuable lessons.C. Confidence is the key to success.D. Industry is the parent of success.59. In which section can you most probably read the passage?A. Campus TrendsB. Culture & LeisureC. Our WorldD. Annika carried out the crimeCI must have been about fourteen then, and I put away the incident from my mind with the easy carelessness of youth. But the words, Carl Walter spoke that day, came back to me years later, and ever since have been of great value to me.Carl Walter was my piano teacher. During one of my lessons he asked how much practicing I was doing. I said three or four hours a day."Do you practice in long stretches, an hour at a time?""I try to.""Well, don't," he exclaimed. "When you grow up, time won't come in long stretches. Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them five or ten before school, after lunch, between household tasks. Spread the practice through the day, and piano-playing will become a part of your life."When I was teaching at Columbia, I wanted to write, but class periods, theme-reading, and committee meetings filled my days and evenings. For two years I got practically nothing down on paper, and my excuse was that I had no time. Then I remembered what Carl Walter had said. During the next week I conducted an experiment. Whenever I had five minutes unoccupied, I sat down and wrote a hundred words or so. To my astonishment, at the end of the week I had a rather large manuscript ready for revision, later on I wrote novels by the same piecemeal method. Though my teaching schedule had become heavier than ever, in every day there were idle moments which could be caught and put to use. I even took up piano—playing again, finding that the small intervals of the day provided sufficient time for both writing and piano practice. There is an important trick in this time—using formula: you must get into your work quickly. If you have but five minutes for writing, you can't afford to waste four chewing your pencil. You must make your mental preparations beforehand, and concentrate on your task almost instantly when the time comes. Fortunately, rapid concentration is easier than most of us realize.I admit I have never learnt how to let go easily at the end of the five or ten minutes. But life can be counted on to supply interruptions. Carl Walter has had a tremendous influence on my life. To him I owe the discovery that even very short periods of time add up to all useful hours I need, if I plunge(投入)in without delay.64. The meaning of “stretch”in the underlined part is the same as that in sentence “________”.A. Bob worked as a government official for a stretch of over twenty years.B. The forests in the north of the province stretch for hundreds of miles.C. My family wasn’t wealthy by any stretch of the imagination.D. What is the best title of this passage?A. Concentrate on Your WorkB. A Little at a TimeC. How I Became a WriterD. Good Advice Is Most ValuableDThe interview is an important event in the job-hunting process, because the 20 or 30 minutes you spend with the interviewer may decide whether or not you get the particular job you want. Therefore, it is important to remember that your purpose during the interview may differ from that of the potential employer. You want to make yourself stand out as a whole person who has personal strengths and should be considered the right person for the job. It is encouraging to know that the interviewer’s task is not to embarrass you, but to hire the right person for the job.Remember, job-hunting is very competitive. Anything you can do to improve your interview techniques will be to your advantage. The following suggestions may help you land the most important job.Your goal in this interview is to make sure your good points get a cross. The interviewer won’t know them unless you point them out, so try to do this in a factual and sincere manner.Don’t say anything bad about your former employers. If you have been fired from a job and the interview asks about it, be honest.Show the interviewer that you are interested in the company by asking questions. Ask about responsibilities, working conditions, promotion opportunities and benefits of the job you are interviewing for.If at some point you decide the interview is not going well, do not let your discouragement show. You have nothing to lose by continuing a show of confidence, and you many have much to gain. It may be real, or it may be a test to see how you react to adverse conditions. Some interviewers may bring up salary early in the interview. At this time, you may indicate that you are more interested in a job where you can prove yourself than a specific salary. This politely passes the question back to the interviewer. If possible, you should negotiate for salary after you have been offered a job and have completed the paperwork.67. To get the job you want, during the interview you should ________.A. avoid the interviewer’s questions that are designed to embarrass youB. remember that you are the bestC. make yourself stand out as the right person for the jobD. tell yourself that you want to get the job68. The passage is mainly about ________.A. how to make your strengths understoodB. how to show your interest in the jobC. how to be frank and sincereD. how to deal with an interviewIV. 任务型阅读Of the hundreds of self-change techniques that have been suggested over the centuries, perhaps only a dozen are totally different. Researchers have tried to see which ones work best.Three techniques deserve special mention: they’re powerful, sim ple and easy to learn. What’s more, individuals who have made successful changes in their lives—changes in eating habits, career paths, coping strategies, and so on—often rely on one or more of the three techniques. To get yourself started in a new direct ion, try the Three M’s:Modify your environmentPeople who have never tried this are astonished by the enormous effect it often has. I’ve known several people who have overcome nail-biting simply by buying 50 nail files and distributing them everywhere: in their pockets, their desks and their bedrooms. With a nail file always within reach, they tended to groom rather than bite. To change yourself, change your world.Monitor your behaviorI’ve been reading research studies on self-monitoring for 20 years, an d I’ve conducted somemyself. The fact is, if you monitor what you do, you’ll probably do better.A study by Canadian researchers showed that teenagers arrived more promptly at a swim practice when they were given an attendance sheet to record their arrival times. Sonya Carr and Rebecca Punzo reported that self-monitoring improves academic performance of emotionally disturbed children in reading, mathematics and spelling. Dozens of studies have similar results, all inspired by heightening our awareness of our behavior.Make commitmentsWhen you commit yourself to another person, you establish a possibility of reinforcement (后效强化);you’ve automatically arranged for a reward if you stick to it and a punishment if you don’t. It puts some pressure on you, and that’s often just what you need. For instance, if you want to exercise more, arrange to do it with a friend. If you don’t s how up, your friend will get angry, and that may be just the ticket to keeping you punctual(准时的). In 1994 Dana Putnam and other researchers showed that patients who made written commitments were far more likely to take prescribed medicine than patients who hadn’t.There’s good news here for all of us. We can meet many of the demands and overcome many of the challenges of life with simple skills that anyone can master an d that don’t require willpower---in other words, with skill, not will.81. The streets here are so narrow that they are often c___________ with vehicles and people.82. He realized his mistake and stood there, his head b___________ in shame.83.
