卷AGenetically modified foods (or GM foods) are foods derived from genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. GM foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. Typically, genetically modified foods are transgenic plant products: soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil. Animal products have also been developed, although as of July 2010 none are currently on the market. Critics have objected to GM foods on several grounds, including safety issues, ecological concerns, and economic concerns. However, genetically-modified foods are here to stay. That’s not to say that food produced by conventional agriculture will disappear, but simply that food-buying patterns will polarize (两极分化): there will be a right market for conventional food just as there is for organic food. It may even be that GM food will become the food of preference because consumers come to appreciate the health benefits of reduced pesticide use. The reason GM food will not go away is that we need a three-fold increase in food production by the year 2050 to keep pace with the world’s predicted population growth to ten or eleven billion. It’s not just a quest ion of more mouths to feed either. What is often forgotten is that all these extra people will take up space, reducing the overall land available for agriculture. "Genetic modification is analogous to nuclear power: nobody loves it, but climate change has made its adoption imperative," says economist Paul Collier of Oxford University. "Declining genetic modification makes a complicated issue more complex. Genetic modification offers both faster crop adaptation and a biological, rather than chemical, approach to yield increases." The world has 800 million hungry people. Until now, food supplies have been increased by improved varieties, pesticides and artificial fertilizers: the green revolution. Now we’re on the edge of a new revolu tion: a genetic one.It may well be that in the long term it is the developing world that benefits most from GM foods. It’s true that for the next ten years or so GM crops may be too expensive. But the lesson of personal computers is applicable here — once the technology has been developed for profitable crops, it will spread and become affordable for all. This doesn’t mean, unfortunately, that famines will disappear, but severity and duration will be helped by an improved ability to produce and distribute food.31. The introduction of GM food will affect _____.A) food-pricing standardB) food-buying patternsC) food-supplies scaleD) food-production efficiency正确答案:B32 Consumers prefer GM food to conventional food because _____.A) GM food receives less pesticide applicationB) GM food is more nutritious than organic foodC) GM food is cheaper than conventional foodD) Conventional food is free from chemicals正确答案:A33. If the world population grows to ten or eleven billion by the year 2050,_____.A) a genetic revolution will take over the green revolutionB) the overall land available for agriculture will run outC) the number of hungry people will rise to 800 millionD) food production should be increased to three times that of today正确答案:D34. "But the lesson of personal computers is applicable here" (in the last paragraph) probably means that ______. A) once the technological innovationis in progress, its cost will be reducedB) once the technology has been turned into productivity, it will become popularC) once the technology has been developed for profitable products, it will enter into our daily lifeD) once the technology has been improved to meet the demands of the developing world, it will be affordable正确答案:C35. We can infer from the passage that GM food will _____A) be too expensive to affordB) keep the world from starvationC) be well-accepted by some consumersD) eventually replace conventional food正确答案:CPassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. The radical transformation of the Soviet society had a profound impact on women’s lives. Soviet women under Stalin were also the first generation of women able togive birth in the safety of a hospital, with access to prenatal care (产检). Marxists had traditionally believed that both capitalism and the middle-class husbands exploited women. The Russian Revolution of 1917 immediately proclaimed complete equalityof rights for women. In the 1920s divorce and abortion were made easily available, and women were urged to work outside the home and liberate themselves sexually. After Stalin came to power, sexual and familial liberation was played down, and the most lasting changes for women involved work and education. These changes were truly revolutionary. Young women were constantly told that they had to be equal to men, that they could and should do everything men could do. Peasant women in Russia had long experienced the equality of backbreaking physical labor in the countryside, and they continued to enjoy that equality on collective farms. Withthe advent of the five-year-plans, millions of women also began to toil in factories and in heavy construction, building dams, roads and steel mills in summer heat and winter frost. Most of the opportunities open to men through education were also open to women. Determined women pursued their studies and entered the ranks of thebetter-paid specialists in industry and science. Medicine practically became a woman’s profession. By 1950, 75 percent of doctors in the Soviet Union were women. Thus Stalinist society gave women great opportunities but demanded great sacrificesas well. The vast majority of women simply had to work outside the home. Wages were so low that it was almost impossible for a family or couple to live only on the husband’s earnings. Moreover, the full-time working woman had a heavy burden of household tasks in her off hours, for most Soviet men in the 1930s still considered the home and the children the woman’s responsibility. Men continued to monopolize the best jobs. Finally, rapid change and economic hardship led to many broken families, creating further physical, emotional, and mental strains for women. In any event, the often-neglected human resource of women was mobilized in Stalinist society.36. The main idea of this passage is that women in Stalinist society ________.A) had economic opportunities that had never been available beforeB) had difficulty balancing their work and family responsibilitiesC) had new opportunities but also many hardshipsD) moved quickly into the highest levels of government正确答案:C37. In the last paragraph, "monopolize" probably means _____.A) hold B) earn C) leave D) pay正确答案:A38. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is to ________.A) compare different systems of governmentB) tell stories about women in Soviet UnionC) amuse the readerD) provide information正确答案:D39. The author’s tone in this passage can best be described as ________.A) disapproving B) emotional C) objective D) sympathetic 正确答案:C40.We can conclude that the economic and social status of women in Stalinist society ________.A) had been improvedB) was worse than beforeC) had not changed muchD) was better than that in capitalistic countries正确答案:A卷BA few years ago, Ann and Walter Taylor thought it might be time to move out of their New York City apartment to the suburbs. But after months of looking, they became discouraged and decided to buy an old house right in the middle of Brooklyn, which is a pa rt of New York City. To their delight, they discovered that they weren’t the only young couple to have made such a decision. Brooklyn isn’t the only city in the United States to experience this kind of renewal. Charleston, South Carolina, has so successfully rebuilt its old central area that it now ranks as one of America’s most charming cities. The restoration of the old port city of Savannah, Georgia, is also living proof that downtown areas do not need to die. But encouraging as these developments may be, they are among the few bright spots in a mass of difficulties that today’s cities face. In the 1940s, urban Americans began a mass move to the suburbs in search of fresh air, elbowroom, and privacy. Suburbs began to sprawl out across the countryside. Since most of those making the move were middle-class, they took with them the tax money the cities needed to maintain the neighborhoods in which they had lived. Thus, many cities began to fall into disrepair. Crime began to soar, and public transportation was neglected. Meanwhile, housing construction costs continued to rise higher and higher. Middle-class housing was allowed to decay, and little new housing was constructed. Eventually, many downtown areas existed for business only. During the day, they would be filled with people working in offices, and at nightthey would be deserted. Given these circumstances, some business executives began asking, "Why bother with going downtown at all? Why not move the offices to the suburbs so that we can live and work in the same area?" Gradually, some of the larger companies began moving out of the cities, with the result that urban centers declined even further and the suburbs expanded still more. This movement of business to the suburbs is not confined to the United States. Business has also been moving to the suburbs in major European countries. But it may well be that this movement to the suburbs has reached its peak. Some people may be tired of spending long hours commuting, and they may have begun to miss the advantages of culture and companionship provided by city life. Perhaps, the decision made by the Taylors is a sign that people will return to the cities and begin to restore them. It begins to look as if subur ban sprawl may not have been the answer to man’s need to create an ideal environment in which to live and work.31. The author of the passage suggests that _____.A) moving to the suburbs is not the answer to an ideal environmentB) cities are likely to be replaced by suburbsC) downtown areas are too crowded to live inD) American people move a lot in history正确答案:A32. The word "elbowroom" in Para. 3 most probably means "_____".A) private space B) room to move freely C) peaceful places D) confined room正确答案:B33. Which of the following statements is true?A) There are just old and poor people left in the cities. B) The movement to the suburbs begins to decline.C) Downtown areas must die in the future. D) Suburbs are sure to replace cities.正确答案:B34. Why has business been moving to the suburbs?A) Because the environment is pleasant in the suburbs. B) Because the suburbs have developed rapidly.C) Because rich people have moved to the suburbs. D) Because many people can live and work in the same area. 正确答案:D35. Many cities began to fall into disrepair in the 1940s because _____.A) housing construction costs continued to rise B) middle-class housing was allowed to decayC) many people moved out of the cities D) only old and poor people were left in the cities正确答案:CPassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. The estimates of the numbers of home-schooled children vary widely. The U.S. Department of Education estimates there are 250,000 to 350,000 home-schooled children in the country. Home school advocates put the number much higher —at about a million. Public schools take a harsh attitude toward home schoolers, perceiving their actions as the ultimate slap in the face for public education and a damaging move for the children. Home schoolers harbor few kind words for public schools, charging shortcomings that range from lack of religious perspective in the curriculum to a herdlike approach to teaching children. Yet, as public school officials realize they stand little to gain by remaining hostile to the home school population, and as home schoolers realize they can reap benefits from public schools, these hard lines seem to be softening a bit. Public schools and home schoolers have moved closer to tolerance and, in some cases even cooperation. Says John Marshall, an education official, "we are becoming relatively toler ant of home schoolers. The idea is, let’s give the kids access to public school so they’ll see it’s not as terrible as they’ve been told, and they’ll want to come back." Perhaps, but don’t count on it, say home school advocates. Home schoolers oppose the system because they have strong convictions that their approach to education — whether fueled by religious enthusiasm or the individual child’s interest and natural pace — is the best. "The bulk of home schoolers just want to be left alone." says Enge Cannon, associate director of the National Center for Home Education. She says home schoolers choose that path for a variety of reasons, but religion plays a role 85 percent of the time. Professor Van Galen breaks home schoolers into two groups. Some home schoolers want their children to learn not only traditional subject matter but also "strict religious doctrine (教条) and a conservative political and social perspective. Not incidentally, they also want their children to learn —both intellectually and emotionally —that the family is the most important institution in society." Other home schoolers contend "not so much that the schools teach heresy (异端邪说), but that schools teach whatever they teach inappropriately." Van Galen writes. "These parents are highly independent and strive to take responsibility for their own lives within a society that they define as bureaucratic (官僚主义) and inefficient."36. Which of the following statements is true?A) Home schoolers engage private teachers to provide additional education for their children.B) Home schoolers don’t go to school but are educated at home by their parents.C) Home schoolers educate their children at home instead of sending them to school.D) Home schoolers advocate combining public education with home schooling.正确答案:C37. Public schools are softening their position on home schooling because ________.A) they want to show their tolerance for different teaching systemsB) there isn’t much they can do to change the present situationC) they have so many problems that they cannot offer proper education for all childrenD) home schooling provides a new variety of education for children正确答案:B38. Most home schoolers’ opposition to public education stems from their _______.A) concern with the cost involved B) worry about the inefficiency of public schoolsC) devotion to religion D) respect for the interests of individuals正确答案:C39. From the passage we know that home school advocates think that ________.A) home schooling is superior and therefore they will not easily give inB) their increased cooperation with public schools will bring about the improvement of public educationC) public schooling is not so bad as has often been saidD) their tolerance of public education will attract more kids to public schools正确答案:A40. It can be concluded from Van Galen’s research that some home schoolers believe that ________.A) teachers in public schools are not as responsible as they should beB) public schools take up a herdlike approach to teaching childrenC) public schools are the source of bureaucracy and inefficiency in modern societyD) public schools cannot provide education that is good enough for their children正确答案:D卷CIt is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our men unfortunately miss that beneficial branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It dose not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself. Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is "aim high." Say to yourself, "My place is at the top." Be king in your dreams. And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" is all wrong. I tell you "put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket." Look around you and take notice; men who do that do not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that break most eggs in the country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tremble and trip (摔倒) him up.31. The author will be glad to see a young man ______ the first day he is at work.A) trying his hand at a broom B) walking around the office C) reading books D) absent from work正确答案:A32. In the second paragraph, "concerns" is most close in meaning to ______.A) firms B) worries C) businessmen D) deals正确答案:APassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Despite a cooling of the economy, high-technology companies are still crying out for skilled workers. The Information Technology Association of America projects that more than 800,000 technology jobs will go unfilled next year. The lack of qualified workers poses a huge threat to the U.S. economy. The most commonly cited reason for this state of affairs is that the country's agrarian-age (农村时代) education system fails to prepare students in the primary and secondary grades for twenty-first-century work. Yet an inadequate and outmoded education system is only part of the problem. A less tangible but equally powerful cause is an antique classification system that divides the workforce into two camps: white-collar knowledge workers and blue-collar manual laborers. Blue-collar workers emerged in the United States during the Industrial Age as work migrated from farms to factories. White-collar office workers became a significant class in the twentieth century, outnumbering the blue-collar workers by mid-century. Corporations increasingly require a new layer of knowledge worker: a highly skilled multi-disciplined talent, who combines the mind of the white-collar worker with a solid grounding in mathematics and science (physics, chemistry, and biology). These "gold-collar" workers — so named for their contributions to their companies and to the economy as well as for their personal earning ability —apply that knowledge to technology. The gold-collar worker already exists in a wide range of jobs. The maintenance technician who tests and repairs aircraft systems at American Airlines; the network administrator who manages systems and network operations at Procter & Gamble; the engineering technologist who assists scientists at Sandia National Laboratories; and the advanced-manufacturing technician at Intel can all be regarded as gold-collar workers.36. In the first paragraph, the word "projects" can be best replaced by _____.A) throws B) predicts C) concludes D) claims正确答案:B37. Compared with a blue-collar worker, a gold-collar worker _____.A) is more skillful in technology B) has received higher educationC) used to be a white-collar worker D) learnt more in high school正确答案:A38. I 21 enough income to handle our $600-a-month mortgage payments plus the usual expenses for a family like ours. That includes everything from music lessons and dental bills to car repairs and college costs. When it comes to insurance, we have a poor man’s major-medical policy. We have to pay the first $500 of any medical fees for each member of the family. It 22 80% of the costs beyond that. Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. GM foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. Typically, genetically modified foods are transgenic plant products: soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil. We can infer from the passage that GM food will _____A) be too expensive to affordB) keep the world from starvationC) be well-accepted by some consumersD) eventually replace conventional food正确答案: CPassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. The radical transformation of the Soviet society had a profound impact on women’s lives. Soviet women under Stalin were also the first generation of women able to give birth in the safety of a hospital, with access to prenatal care (产检). Marxists had traditionally believed that both capitalism and the middle-class husbands exploited women. The Russian Revolution of 1917 immediately proclaimed complete equality of rights for women. With the advent of the five-year-plans, millions of women also began to toil in factories and in heavy construction, building dams, roads and steel mills in summer heat and winter frost. Most of the opportunities open to men through education were also open to women. Determined women pursued their studies and entered the ranks of the better-paid specialists in industry and science. Medicine practicallybecame a woman’s profession. By 1950, 75 percent of doctors in the Soviet Union were women. Thus Stalinist society gave women great opportunities but demanded great sacrifices as well. The vast majority of women simply had to work outside the home. Wages were so low that it was almost impossible for a family or couple to live only on the husband’s earnings. Moreover, the full-time working woman had a heavy burden of household tasks in her off hours, for most Soviet men in the 1930s still considered the home and the childre n the woman’s responsibility. Men continued to monopolize the best jobs. Finally, rapid change and economic hardship led to many broken families, creating further physical, emotional, and mental strains for women. In any event, the often-neglected human resource of women was mobilized in Stalinist society.36. Says John Marshall, an education official, "we are becoming relatively tolerant of home schoolers. Public schools are softening their position on home schooling because ________.A) they want to show their tolerance for different teaching systemsB) there isn’t much they can do to change the pre sent situationC) they have so many problems that they cannot offer proper education for all childrenD) home schooling provides a new variety of education for children正确答案:B38. When did the number of white-collar workers become bigger than that of the blue-collar workers in America? A) Recently. B) In 1970 or so. C) In 1950 or so. D) During the Industrial Age.正确答案:C卷DThe estimates of the numbers of home-schooled children vary widely. The U.S. Department of Education estimates there are 250,000 to 350,000 home-schooled children in the country. Home school advocates put the number much higher — at about a million. Says John Marshall, an education official, "we are becoming relatively tolerant of home schoolers. The idea is, let’s give the kids access to publicschool so they’ll see it’s not as terrible as they’ve been told, and they’ll want to come back." Perhaps, but don’t count on it, say home s chool advocates. "These parents are highly independent and strive to take responsibility for their own lives within a societythat they define as bureaucratic (官僚主义) and inefficient."31. Which of the following statements is true?A) Home schoolers engage private teachers to provide additional education for their children.B) Home schoolers don’t go to school but are educated at home by their parents.C) Home schoolers educate their children at home instead of sending them to school.D) Home schoolers advocate combining public education with home schooling.正确答案:C32. Public schools are softening their position on home schooling because ________.A) they want to show their tolerance for different teaching systemsB) there isn’t much they can do to change the present situationC) they have so many problems that they cannot offer proper education for all childrenD) home schooling provides a new variety of education for children正确答案:B33. Most home schoolers’ opposition to public education stems from their _______.A) concern with the cost involved B) worry about the inefficiency of public schoolsC) devotion to religion D) respect for the interests of individuals正确答案:C34. From the passage we know that home school advocates think that ________.A) home schooling is superior and therefore they will not easily give inB) their increased cooperation with public schools will bring about the improvement of public educationC) public schooling is not so bad as has often been saidD) their tolerance of public education will attract more kids to public schools正确答案:A35. It can be concluded from Van Galen’s research that some home schoolers believe that ________.A) teachers in public schools are not as responsible as they should beB) public schools take up a herdlike approach to teaching childrenC) public schools are the source of bureaucracy and inefficiency in modern societyD) public schools cannot provide education that is good enough for their children正确答案:DPassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tremble and trip (摔倒) him up.36. The author will be glad to see a young man ______ the first day he is at work.A) trying his hand at a broom B) walking around the office C) reading books D) absent from work正确答案:A37. The author ______.A) started his career by sweeping out the office B) looks down on the janitors and janitressesC) pays respect to the janitors and janitresses D) thinks it unnecessary to have a professional sweeper正确答案:A38. According to the passage, ______ is an indispensable part of business education.A) being a good janitor or janitress B) starting from sweeping in the office C) learning to use the computer D) getting familiar with the Internet正确答案:B39. ______ is essential in your way to success.A) Patience B) Concentration C) Perseverance D) Modesty 正确答案:B40. Since terrorists monly use violence against civilian targets, their actions are widely condemned as morally unacceptable. In practice, aswith a great many other behaviors, what constitutes terrorism is a matter of social definition. When nations resort to violence to further their interests, the results are considered as being legal warfare. In many respects, terrorism is an extension of that approach by people who lack the armies of a state. For many years the public, government officials, and scholars treated terrorism primarily as a “nuisance.” But recently, we have e to see terrorism as a new mode of warfare with far-reaching implications. Terrorism serves as an avenue ofpolitical expression for some militants (好战分子), whether they are motivated by ideology, ethnicity, or religion. However, what distinguishes muchcontemporary terrorism is not so much its motivation or purpose, but rather the extent of state involvement in carrying out well-planned and highly destructive acts against adversary nations.Another feature of contemporary terrorism has been the extent to which it has bee a media event. Terrorism is usually aimed at a media audience, not the actual victims. The act of media coverage also enhances the importance of “the problem” that led to the terrorist activities. Newspaper readers and television viewers see “the problem” as of much greater importance and as justifying national or international action.11.According to the passage, terrorism is widelyunacceptable ______.A) for its illegal actionsB)because it is often targeted at ordinary peopleC) as it usually leads to death and hatredD) for its violence12.The word “approach” at the end of t he firstparagraph refers to ______.A) legal warfareB)establishing a stateC) furthering one’sinterests via violenceD) terrorism13.People used to ______.A) underestimate theinfluence of terrorismB) pay much attention toterrorismC) suffer less from terrori sts’actionsD) have sympathy with the terrorists14.Terrorism in the past ______.A) had differentobjectivesB) had different motivationsC) was more influentialD) was less closely related togovernments15.Terrorists use media mainly ______.A) to maketheir aim known to the worldB) to carry outviolent actionsC) as an avenue of politicalexpressionD) to condemn the adversary nations Passage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.Given a good shopping position and the right amount of money available, an educated person ought to be able to make a small, steady living out of a bookshop. It is not a difficult trade to learn and the large chain-stores can never force the small independent bookseller out of existence as they have done to the corner shop and the local milkman. But the hours of work are very long ― I was only a part-time employee, but my employer put in a seventy-hour week, apart from regular journeys out of shopping hours to buy books. It is an unhealthy life too. As a rule a bookshop is very cold in winter, because if it is too warm the windows get steamed up, and a bookseller depends on the display in his windows trying to bring customers into his shop. Books give off more dust and dirtier dust than anything else yet invented, and the top of a book is the place where every fly prefers to die.But the real reason why I should not like to be back in the book trade for life is that while I was in it, I lost my love of books. A bookseller cannot always tell the truth about his books, and that gives him a dislike for them; still worse is the fact that he is always dusting them and moving them to-and-fro.There was a time when I really did love books ― loved the sight and smell and feel of them ― if they were fifty or more years old, that is. Nothing pleased me quite so much as to buy a bargain lot of them for 50 pence at a country auction sale. There is a peculiar flavor about the knocked-about unexpected books you pick up in that kind of collection; little-known eighteenth-century poets, out-of-date geography books, one or two volumes of forgotten novels. For occasional reading ― in your bath, for instance, or late atnight when you are too tired to go to sleep ― thereis nothing as good as a very old picture storybook. But as soon as I went to work in the bookshop I stopped buying books. Seen in a mass, five or ten thousand at a time, books were dull and even a little sickening. Nowadays I do buy one occasionally, but only if it is a book that I want to read and can’ t borro w, and I never buy rubbish.16.What does the author mean in the first sentenceof the passage?A) If an educated person wants tomake a living, he should run a bookshop.B) It iseasy for an educated person to earn money byrunning a bookshop.C) When an educated person isgiven a good shopping position and a certainamount of money he should open a bookshop.D) Ifan educated person has proper money and finds asuitable shopping location, he could open abookshop for steady ine.17.Running a bookshop is a good way to make a livingbecause ________.A) the owner will never beforced out of business by bigger shopsB) thereare many corner shops to helpC) even the localmilkmen e to buy booksD) the bookseller isindependent18.Bookshops are kept cold in winter because_______.A) it is a rule which must be followedB)booksellers want customers to see the displayclearly through the windowsC) more customers e to buy books in winterD) customers like them keptcold19.All of the following statements are true EXCEPT________.A) the author was tired of cleaningbooks and moving them about in the bookshopB) his telling lies about the books made him lose hislove of themC) running a bookshop is not adifficult trade to learnD) the author did notlike any books20.The author once took great pleasure in_________.A) buying old books and reading themoccasionallyB) taking bath occasionally late atnightC) buying all kinds of booksD) buying booksquite often which he was unable to borrowPassage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.El Nino means “little boy” in Spanish; when capitalized, it refers to the Christ child. This innocent-sounding name originated in the 19th century, when Peruvian sailors noticed that every few years around Christmastime, waters near the coasts warmed upand the current shifted southward. But this “little boy” plays havoc around the globe.El Nino’s vast impact on humans has often been catastrophic. The El Nino of 1982?1983 inflicted $13 billion in damage and claimed some 2,000 lives. In Australia day turned to night when a dust storm blanketed Melbourne; brush fires raged in its wake. In place of its normal monsoon, Southern India got dried-up crops and the threat of mass starvation. At the same time, violent rainstorms devastated the Western Hemis phere: Peru’s fishing industry once one of the richest in the world was wiped out, and seaside towns were washed into the Pacific. Is there a good side to El Nino? There can be. Zebiak notes that the number of tropical hurricanes in the Atlantic is reduced during an El Nino year. One theory is that winds created by El Nino shear off the tops of Atlantic hurricanes, aborting them before they reach full force. And a team of scientists in Israel who study tree rings and satellite cloud pictures concluded that El Nino may bring precious moisture to the thirsty Middle East. "It is perhaps fitting that El Nino the Christ child should have a link to the Holy Land,” notes scientist Dan Yakir. This year, scientists around the world are keeping a sharp eye on El Nino. They know that the greater the temperature rise in Pacific waters off South America, the more powerful the El Nino. And this year’s waters have heated up unusually fast.El Nino’s effects won’tjust be climatic, of course the global economy is sure to suffer as well. Drought in Brazil and flooding in Colombia may result in higher prices for coffee andother crops. And fishing industries from Ecuador to California are already being hurt.Clearly, the more accurately scientists can forecast El Nino, the more people everywhere can prepare. Insurance panies, farmers, power and irrigation panies, public-safety agencies and even tourist boards could benefit from knowing in advance when El Nino will strike.“Reliable forecasting is still in its infancy,” states Mark Cane. Someday, perhaps, scientists will be able to predict exactly how El Nino will behave. But for now, batten down the hatches and get ready for some wild weather!21.The phrase “play havoc” in paragraph 1 means“ _____________________”.A) cause trouble, damage or destructionB) bring benefit orhappinessC) play an important roleD) havegreenhouse effect22.According to one theory mentioned in paragraph 3,_______.A) the winds created by El Nino willstrengthen Atlantic hurricanesB) the windscreated by El Nino can stop Atlantic hurricanesfrom reaching full forceC) El Nino may bringfloods to Middle East which is regarded as theHoly LandD) El Nino will not bring disaster tothe Holy Land, because it is the Christ child23.All of the following statements are true EXCEPT________.A) there are both good and bad sides toEl NinoB) El Nino causes global economy to suffera lotC) El Nino may bring precious moisture tothe thirsty Middle EastD) the El Nino of1982?1983 caused litt le damage to Peru’s fishing industry24.From the phrase “in its infancy” of the lastparagraph, we can infer that _________.A) theforecasting of El Nino is reliableB) insurancepanies and farmers benefit a lot from theforecasting of El NinoC) the forecasting of ElNino has only just started to developD)scientists can already predict exactly how ElNino will behave now25.From the passage we can see the author’sattitude toward El Nino is ___________________.A) optimisticB) pessimisticC) supportiveD) objectivePassage FourQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. We are all inclined to believe that our generation is more civilized than the generation that preceded ours. From time to time, there is even some substantial evidence that we hold in higher regard such civilized attributes as passion, pity, remorse (懊悔), intelligence and a respect for the customs of people different from ourselves. Why war then? Some pessimistic historians think the whole society of man runs in cycles and that one of the phases is war. The optimists, on the other hand, think war is not like an eclipse (日食) or a flood or a spell of bad weather. They believe that it is more like a disease for which a cure could be found if the causes were known.Because war is the ultimate drama of life and death storiesand pictures of it are more interesting than those about peace. This is so true that all of us, and perhaps those of us in television more than most, are often caught up in the action of war to the exclusion of the ideas of it.If it is true, as we would like to think it is, that our age is more civilized than ages past, we must all agree that it’s very strange thatin the twentieth century, our century, we have killed more than 70 million of our fellowmen on purpose, at war. It is very strange that since 1900 more men have killed more other men than in any other seventy years in history.Probably the reason we are able to do both, that is, believe on the one hand that we are more civilized and on the other hand wage war to kill ― is that killing is not so personal an affair as it once was. The enemy is invisible. One man doesn’t look another in the eye and run him through with a sword. The enemy dead or alive is largely unseen. He iskilled by remote control: a loud noise, a distant puff of smoke and then silence. The pictures of thevictim’s wife and children, which he carries in his breast pocket, are destroyed with him. He is not heard to cry out. The question of passion or pity or remorse does not enter into it. The enemy is not a man; he is a statistic. It is true, too, that more people are being killed at war now than previously because we’re better at doing it than we used to be. One man with one modern weapon can kill thousands.26.In modern wars more people get killed because_____.A) people are more cruelB) people don’tcare others’ lives C) people have more advancedweaponsD) people are more civilized27.In what way are we more civilized than theancients?A) We can kill more people.B) We respect those people different from us.C) We have moreinteresting stories of war.D) We don’t think ofkilling as a personal affair anymore.28.In modern war the enemy is treated as _____.A) ananimalB) a victimC) a manD) a statistic withoutlife29.How is the enemy killed in modern war?A) By anopponent running him through with a sword.B) By a man who knows him well.C) By remote control.D) Bya puff of smoke.30.What is the attitude of the author toward war?A)Negative.B) Supportive.C) Neutral.D) Indifferent. He made speeches all over America. He held meetings. When he was arrested, news of his arrest was in newspapers around the world. Black African-Americans became radicalized and wanted to fight. Some went further than King wanted, and used violence, as in the Watts Riots (暴动) in 1965 in Los Angeles. But he taught them that they could change things. Publicity then included posters, newspapers, meetings, word of mouth, marches, demonstrations, radio, and early television.正确答案:India正确答案:accompanied正确答案:publicity正确答案:silly正确答案:lunchtime正确答案:marched正确答案:jail正确答案:fight against injustice正确答案:he was arrested正确答案:word of mouthPart II Reading Comprehension ( 25 minutes )Section AIn the 1820s Coffin moved west to Newport (now Fountain City), Indiana, where he opened a store. It was a drugstore. While Europeans were served at the counter, a long line of Africans queued at the window and often not only were kept waiting but, when their turn came to be served, were rudely treated by the shop assistants. One day I was determined to make a public protest against this kind of thing, and many of the schoolboys in my class followed me to the store and waited outside to see what would happen when I went in.I simply went into the shop and asked the manager politely for some medicine. As soon as he saw me standing in the place where only European customers were allowed to stand he shouted at me in a bastard language that is only used by a boss when speaking to his servants. I stood at the counter and politely requested in English that I should be served. The manager became exasperated and said to me in English, "Even if you stand there till Christmas I will never serve you."I went to the District Commissioner’s office. Fortunately the District Commissioner was out, for he was one of the old school; however, I saw a young District Officer who was a friend of mine. He was very concerned to hear my story and told me that if ever I wanted anything more from the drugstore all I had to do was come to him personally and he would buy my medicine for me. I protested that that was not good enough. I asked him to accompany me back to the store and to make a protest to the manager. This he did, and I well remember him saying to the manager, "Here is Mr. Kaunda who is a responsible member of the Urban Advisory Council, and you treat him like a common servant." The manager of the drugstore apologized and said, "If only he had introduced himself and explained who he was, then, of course I should have given him proper service."I had to explain once again that he had missed my point. Why should I have to introduce myself every time I went into a store …any more than I should have to buy my medicine by going to a European friend? I want to prove that any man of any color, whatever his position, should have the right to go into any shop and buy what he wants.31."Color bar" in the first paragraph comes closest in meaning to _______________.A) a bar which is painted in different colorsB) the fact that white and black customers are served separatelyC) a bar of chocolate having different colorsD) a counter where people of different colors are served with beer正确答案:B32.The writer was, at the time of the story, _______________.A) a black, but a member of the Urban Advisory CouncilB) an African servantC) a black, but a friend of the drugstore managerD) a rich black正确答案:A33.The manager of the drugstore shouted at the writer in a bastard language because __________.A) he hadn’t learned to speak polite EnglishB) he thought the writer wouldn’t understand EnglishC) that was the usual language when speaking to AfricansD) that was the only language he could speak when he was angry正确答案:C34.In the third paragraph, "he was one of the old school" means _______________.A) he believed in the age-old practice of racial discriminationB) he was a very old manC) he graduated from an old, conservative schoolD) he was in charge of an old school正确答案:A35.Why didn’t the writer wait at the window of the drugstore like other black Africans?A) Because he thought he was educated and should be treated differently.B) Because he thought, being an important person, he should not be kept waiting.C) Because he thought his white friend would help him out.D) Because he wanted to protest against racial discrimination.正确答案:DPassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. In the world of entertainment, TV talk shows have undoubtedly flooded every inch of space on daytime television. Many of us have seen and heard the often recycled topics found on such shows as Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one varies in style and format. But no two shows are more profoundly opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows.Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of “trash talk”. The topics on his show are as shocking as shocking can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show themes of love, sex, cheating, guilt, hate, conflict and morality to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is a display and exploitation of society’s moral catastrophes (灾难), yet people are willing to eat up the intriguing predicaments (困境) of other people’s lives.Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes TV talk show to its extreme, but Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show focuses on the improvement of society and anindividual’s quality of life. Topics range from teaching your children responsibility, managing your work weekly, to getting to know your neighbors.Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being dumped on society. Jerry ends every show with a “final word”. He makes a small speech that sums up the entire moral of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.Clear as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show’s main target audience is middle-class Americans. Most of these people have the time, money, and stability to deal with life’s tougher problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of an association with the young adults of society. These are 18- to 21-year-olds whose main troubles in life involve love, relationship, sex, money and peers. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned underneath the show's exploitation. While the two shows are as different as night and day, both have ruled the talk show circuit for many years now. Each one caters to a different audience while both have a strong following from large groups of fans. Ironically, both could also be considered pioneers in the talk show world.36.Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey are _____.A) more family-orientedB) unusually popularC) more profoundD) relatively formal正确答案:B37.Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear distasteful, the audience ______.A) remain fascinated by themB) are ready to face up to themC) remain indifferent to themD) are willing to get involved in them正确答案:A38.Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?A) A new type of robot.B) Racist hatred.C) Family budget planning.D) Street violence.正确答案:C39.Despite their different approaches, the two talk shows are both _____________.A) ironicalB) sensitiveC) instructive正确答案:C40.We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows _________________.A) have monopolized the talk show circuitB) exploit the weaknesses in human natureC) appear at different times of the dayD) are targeted at different audiences正确答案:DPart III Vocabulary and Structure ( 11 minutes )41.Animal rights activists are _____________ to using animals for medical research.A) punctualB) offensiveC) sentimentalD) opposed正确答案:D42.She turned away, prepared to go, _____________ to accept further rudeness.A) uneasyB) unwillingC) undoubtedD) unique正确答案:B43.Brown is certainly confident ________ his future success.A) inB) withC) ofD) to正确答案:C44.She was sent on a special ________ to Africa.A) missionB) causeC) tourD) delegation正确答案:A45.My professor suggested that I ________ the data accumulated over the years when I work on my project.A) make use ofB) take possession ofD) benefit from正确答案:A46.By visiting and talking to former prisoners in the camps, the journalist came to an obvious conclusion that they were ______.A) disguisingB) cloningC) puzzlingD) starving正确答案:D47.A large majority of elderly Americans ______ an old-age allowance from the government.A) give upB) get throughC) count onD) get by正确答案:C48.For a lot of people, baptisms, weddings and ______ are the only occasions they go to church.A) inaugurationsB) funeralsC) advertisementsD) salvation正确答案:B49.Local people have mixed feelings about the planned ______ of their town into a regional capital.A) arrangementB) transformationC) targetD) improvement正确答案:B50.We were intrigued to hear about Richard's ______ when he went mountain-climbing.A) exploitsB) horsepowersC) monstersD) homesteaders正确答案:A51.In the story the clever little fox ______ the hunters and escapes from the trap they set.A) outsmartsB) imposesD) disguises正确答案:A52.Rochelle L. The New York Times covered their every move. Presidents, the real ones, sought their counsel. For Woodrow Wilson and Dwight Eisenhower, being head of Princeton and Columbia, respectively, was a stepping-stone to the White House. Today, though, the job of college president is less and less removed from that of the Avon lady (except the house calls are made to the doorsteps of wealthy alums).Ruth Simmons, the newly installed president of Brown University and the first African American to lead an Ivy League school, is a throwback to the crusading campus leaders of old. She doesn’t merely marshal funds; she invests them in the great educational causes of our day. With the more than $300 million she raised as president of Smith College from 1995 to 2001, Simmons also established an engineering program (the first at any women’s school). At a meeting to discuss the future of Smith’s math department, one professor timidly requested two more discussion sections for his course. Her response: "Dream bigger."Her own dream was born in a sharecropper's shack in East Texas where there was no money for books or toys —she and her 11 siblings each got an apple, an orange and 10 nuts for Christmas. When Simmons won a scholarship to Dillard University, her high school teachers took up a collection so she’d have a coat. She went on to Harvard to earn a Ph.D. in Romance languages.Simmons has made diversity her No. 1 campus crusade. She nearly doubled the enrollment of black freshmen at Smith, largely by traveling to high schools in the nation’s poorest ZIP codes to recruit. Concerned with the lives of minority students once they arrive at school, she has fought to ease the racial standoffs that plague so many campuses. In 1993, while vice provost at Princeton, she wrote a now famous report recommending that the university establish an office of conflict resolution to defuse racial misunderstandings before they boiled over. Her first task at Brown will be to heal one such rupture last spring after the student paper published an incendiary ad by conservative polemicist David Horowitz arguing that blacks economically benefited from slavery. "There’s no safe ground for anybody in race relations, but campuses, unlike any other institution in our society, provide the opportunity to cross racial lines," says Simmons. "And even if you’re hurt, you can’t walk away. You have to walk over that line."31.What does the author intend to illustrate with the example of Woodrow Wilson and Dwight Eisenhower?A) The president of the first-class university was really very important.。

Our 25 was a big base on the island of Tulagi in the South Pacific.I was one of the Murzim’s several 26 and, quite the same as for folk ashore, this Thanksgiving morning had seen us busily preparing a traditional dinner 27 roast turkey.Well, as any cook knows, it’s a lot of hard work to cook and serve a big meal, and clean up and put everything away. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Public distrust of scientists stems in part from the blurring of boundaries between science and technology, between discovery and manufacture. Most governments, perhaps all governments, justify public expenditure on scientific research in terms of the economic benefits the scientific enterprise has brought in the past and will bring in the future. Politicians remind their voters of the splendid machines “our scientists〞have invented. At the same time, the politicians demand of scientists that they tailor their research to “economics needs〞, that they award a higher priority to research proposals that are “near the market〞and can be translated into the greatest return on investment in the shortest time. Dependent, as they are, on politicians for much of their funding, scientists have little choice but to comply. Like the rest of us, they are membersof a society that rates the creation of wealth as the greatest possible good. Many have reservations, but keep them to themselves in what they perceive as a climate hostile to the pursuit of understanding for its own sake and the idea of an inquiring, creative spirit. In such circumstances no one should be too hard on people who are suspicious of conflicts of interest. When we learn that the distinguished professor assuring us of the safety of a particular product holds a consultancy with the company making it, we cannot be blamed for wondering whether his fee might conceivably cloud his professional judgment. Even if the professor holds no consultancy with any firm, some people many still distrust him because of his association with those who do, or at least wonder about the source of some of his research funding. This attitude can have damaging effects. It questions the integrity of individuals working in a profession that prizes intellectual honesty as the supreme virtue, and plays into the hands of those who would like to discredit scientists by representing them as venal (可以收买的). This makes it easier to dismiss all scientific pronouncements, but especially those made by the scientists who present themselves as “experts〞. The scientist most likely to understand the safety of a nuclear reactor, for example, is a nuclear engineer who declares that a reactor is unsafe, and we believe him, because clearly it is not to his advantage to lie about it. If he tells us it is safe, on the other hand, we distrust him, because he may well be protecting the employer who pays his salary.31.What is the chief concern of most governments when it comes to scientific researchA) The creativity of scientists.B) The reduction of public expenditure.C) Quick economic returns.D) The budget for a research project.正确答案:C32.Scientists have to tailor their research to “economic needs〞in order to ________.A) win more awardsB) put theories into practice more efficientlyC) obtain funding from the governmentD) pursue knowledge for knowledge’s sake正确答案:C33.Why won’t scientists complain about the government’s policy concerning scientific researchA) They think they work in an environment hostile to the free pursuit of knowledge.B) They are accustomed to keeping their opinions to themselves.C) They know it takes patience to win support from the public.D) They think compliance with government policy is in the interests of the public.正确答案:A34.According to the author, people are suspicious of the professional judgment of scientists because ________.A) their pronouncements often turn out to be wrongB) sometimes they hide the source of their research fundingC) some of them do not give priority to intellectual honestyD) they could be influenced by their association with the project concerned正确答案:D35.What damaging effects can public distrust of scientists haveA) Governments may spend less research funds on scientific research.B) People may doubt the intellectual honesty and the statements of the so-called experts.C) It may dampen the enthusiasm of scientists for independent research.D) Scientists themselves may doubt the value of their research findings.正确答案:BPassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Throughout the nation’s more than 15,000 school districts widely differing approaches to teaching science and math have emerged. Though there can be strength in diversity, a new international analysis suggests that this variability has instead contributed to lackluster (平淡的) achievement scores by U.S. children relative to their peers in other developed countries.Indeed, concludes William H. Schmidt of Michigan State University, who led the new analysis, “no single intellectually coherent vision dominates U.S. educational practice in math or science.〞The reason, he said, “is because the system is deeply and fundamentally flawed.〞The new analysis, released this week by the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va., is based on data collected from about 50 nations as part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. Not only do approaches to teaching science and math vary among individual U.S. communities, the report finds, but there appears to be little strategic focus within a school district’s curricula, its textbooks, or its teachers’ activities. This contrasts sharply with the coordinated national programs of most other countries. On average, U.S. students study more topics within science and math than their international counterparts do. This creates an educational environment that “is a mile wide and an inch deep,〞Schmidt notes. For instance, eighth graders in the United States cover about 33 topics in math versus just 19 in Japan. Among science courses, the international gap is even wider. U.S. curricula for this age level resemble those of a small group of countries including Australia, Thailand, Iceland, and Bulgaria. Schmidt asks whether the United States wants to be classed with these nations, whose educational systems “share our pattern of splintered (支离破碎的) visions〞but which are not economic leaders. The new report “couldn’t come at a better time,〞says Gerald Wheeler, executive director of the National Science Teachers Association in Arlington. “The new National Science Education Standards provide that focused vision,〞including the call “to do less, but in greater depth.〞Implementing the new science standards and their math counterparts will be the challenge, he and Schmidt agree, because the decentralized responsibility for education in the United States requires that any reforms be tailored and instituted one community at a time.In fact, Schmidt argues, reforms such as these proposed national standards "face analmost impossible task, because even though they are intellectually coherent, each becomes only one more voice in the babble (嘈杂声)."36.According to the passage, the teaching of science and math in America is ________.A) overcentralized in the pastB) characterized by its diversityC) advocated in other developed countriesD) focused on tapping students’ potential正确答案:B37.The fundamental flaw of American school education is that ________.A) it overemphasizes width of school subjetsB) it allows the creativity of individual teachersC) it sets a very low academic standard for studentsD) it lacks a coordinated national program正确答案:D38.By saying that the U.S. educational environment is “a mile wide and an inch deep〞(Para.5), the author means U.S. educational practice ________.A) scratches the surface of a wide range of topicsB) lays stress on quality at the expense of quantityC) encourages learning both in depth and in scopeD) offers an environment for comprehensive education正确答案:A39.The new National Science Education Standards are good news in that they will ________.A) solve most of the problems in school teachingB) provide depth to school science educationC) quickly dominate U.S. educational practiceD) be able to meet the demands of the community正确答案:B40.Implementing the new science and math standards will prove difficult because ________.A) intellectually coherence can’t be realizedB) there is always controversy in educational circlesC) the current educational patterns are still advocated by most educatorsD) school districts are responsible for making their own decisions正确答案:DPart III Vocabulary and Structure ( 12 minutes )Directions: There are a number of incomplete sentences in this part. Hoping for tips, I called professor Emmons, who pioneered research on the benefits of positive thinking. Emmons quoted new studies that indicated that even pretending to be thankful raises levels of the chemicals associated with pleasure and contentment. He recommended keeping a log of everything I’m grateful for in a given week or month.I followed his suggestions, but my first attempts at keeping a gratitude list were pretty weak: coffee, naps, caffeine in general. As my list grew, I found more uplift: freshly picked blueberries; the Beatles’ White Album; that I’m not bald.By day three, I was on a tear, thanking every grocery bagger and parent on the playground like I’d just won an Oscar and hanging post-it notes to remind myself of the next day’s thank-you targets: the mailman, my son’s math teacher. But soon, the full-on approach started to bum me out. Researchers call it the Pledge of Allegiance effect. “If you overdo gratitude, it loses its meaning or, worse, becomes a chore,〞professor Emmons told me when I mentioned my slump. Be selective, he advised, and focus on thanking the unsung heroes in your life. Then professor Emmons suggested a “gratitude visit.〞Think of a person who has made a major difference in your life and whom you’ve never properly thanked. Compose a detailed letter to him or her that expresses your appreciation in concrete terms, then read it aloud, face-to-face.I immediately flashed on Miss Riggi, my eighth-grade English teacher. She was the first one to open my eyes to Hemingway, Faulkner, and other literary giants. To this day, I am guided by her advice (“Never be boring〞). I booked plane tickets to my hometown, Scranton, Pennsylvania.Miss Riggi was shorter than I remember, though unmistakable with her still long, black hair and bright, intelligent eyes. After a slightly awkward hug and small talk, we settled in. I took a deep breath and read. And whether it was Miss Riggi’s enormous smile when I finished the letter, or the way she held it close as we said goodbye, my feeling of peace and joy remained long after I returned home.。

Although we are stuck with paying minor expenses, our premium is low — only $560 a year — and we are 23 against catastrophe.24 that and the policy on our two cars at $400 a year, we have no other insurance. But we are setting aside $2,000 a year in an IRA. We’ve been able to make up the difference in income by 25 without appreciably lowering our standard of living. We continue to dine out once or twice a month, but now we patronize local restaurants 26 more expensive places in the city. We still attend the opera and ballet in Milwaukee but only a few times a year. We eat less meat, drink cheaper wine and see fewer movies. 27 Christmases are a memory, and we combine vacations with story assignments … I suspect not everyone who loves the country would be happy living the way we do. It takes a couple of special qualities. One is a 28 for solitude. Because we are so busyand on such a tight budget, we don’t entertain much. During the growing season there is no time for socializing anyway. Jim and Emily are 29 in school activities, but they too spend most of their time at home. The other requirement is energy — a lot of it. The way to make self-sufficiency work on a small scale is to resist the 30 to buy a tractor and other expensive laborsaving devices. Instead, you do the work yourself. The only machinery we own (not counting the lawn mower) is a little three-horsepower rotary cultivator and a 16-inch chain saw.A) picks upB) temptationC) givenD) generateE) involvedF) instead ofG) ExtravagantH) cutting upI) cutting backJ) enduranceK) coveredL) Aside fromM) toleranceN) exotic O) pay21. ______________________ 正确答案:D22. ______________________ 正确答案:A23. ______________________ 正确答案:K24. ______________________ 正确答案:L25. ______________________ 正确答案:I26. ______________________ 正确答案:F27. ______________________ 正确答案:G28. ______________________ 正确答案:M29. ______________________ 正确答案:E30. ______________________ 正确答案:BSection BPassage OneQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Genetically modified foods (or GM foods) are foods derived from genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. GM foods were firstput on the market in the early 1990s. That’s not to sa y that food produced by conventional agriculture will disappear, but simply that food-buying patterns will polarize (两极分化): there will be a right market for conventional food just as there is for organic food. It may even be that GM food will become the food of preference because consumers come to appreciate the health benefits of reduced pesticide use. The reason GM food will not go away is that we need a three-fold increase in food production by the year 2050 to keep pace with the world’s pre dicted population growth to ten or eleven billion. It’s not just a question of more mouths to feed either. What is often forgotten is that all these extra people will take up space, reducing the overall land available for agriculture. "Genetic modification is analogous to nuclear power: nobody loves it, but climate change has made its adoption imperative," says economist Paul Collier of Oxford University. "Declining genetic modificationmakes a complicated issue more complex. Genetic modification offers both faster crop adaptation and a biological, rather than chemical, approach to yield increases." The world has 800 million hungry people. Until now, food supplies have been increased by improved varieties, pesticides and artificial fertilizers: the green revolution. Now we’re on the edge of a new revolution: a genetic one.It may well be that in the long term it is the developing world that benefits most from GM foods. It’s true that for the next ten years or so GM crops may be too expensive. But the lesson of personal computers is applicable here — once the technology has been developed for profitable crops, it will spread and become affordable for all. This doesn’t mean, unfortunately, that famines will disappear, but s everity and duration will be helped by an improved ability to produce and distribute food.31. A) once the technological innovation is in progress, its cost will be reducedB) once the technology has been turned into productivity, it will become popularC) once the technology has been developed for profitable products, it will enter into our daily lifeD) once the technology has been improved to meet the demands of the developing world, it will be affordable正确答案:C35.
