船用柴油机是一种在船上使用的柴油机。
其工作原理如下：一定量的新鲜空气被吸入或泵入气缸并被运动的活塞压缩至很高的压力。
空气被压缩时，温度升高，便点燃喷入气缸的油雾。
燃油的燃烧增加了缸内空气的热量，使空气膨胀并迫使发动机活塞对曲轴做功，随时之驱动螺旋桨。
两次喷油期限间的运转过程叫一个工作循环。
它由一些程序固定的过程组成。
这个循环可在二个行程或四个行程内完成。
四冲程柴油机的工作循环需四个独立的活塞行程，即吸气、压缩、膨胀和排气。
如果我们把吸气和排气行程与压缩和膨胀行程结合起来，四冲程柴油机就变成了二冲程柴油机。
二冲程循环从活塞离开其行程底部，即下止点（BDC）向下运行开始，气侧面的进气口即扫气口是打开的[图（a）]，排气口也是打开的。
经压缩的新鲜空气充入气缸，通过排气口将上一行程的残余废气吹出。
当活塞上行至其行程的1/5时，关闭进、排气口，随后空气在活塞早行中被压缩[图（b）]。
当活塞上行到行程底部，即上止点（TDC）时空气的压力和温度都上升到很高的数值。
此时喷油器把很细的油雾喷入炽热的空气中，燃烧开始，在气气体中产生更高的压力。
随着高压气体的膨胀，活塞被推动下行[图（c）]直到穹打开排气口，燃烧过的气体开始排出[图（d）]，活塞继续下行直到它打开进气口，另一个循环开始。
在二冲程柴油机中，曲轴转一击产生一具动力行程，即做功行程；而在四冲程柴油机中，曲轴转两周才产生一个动力行程。
这就是为什么从理论上说二冲程柴油机能产生相同尺寸的四冲程柴油机的两倍功率。
然而，扫气不充分和其他损失使这一优势降到大约1.8倍。
在船上，每种柴油机都有它的应用。
低速（即90~120r/min）主推进柴油机以二冲程工作。
在此低速时，机桨间不需减速箱。
四冲程柴油机（通常以中速运转达，转速在250~750r/min）用于发电机，并且有时作推进主机，用减速箱提供90~120r/min的速度。
柴油机结构（I）一、机座和机架机座的大多数情况下是焊接结构，用螺栓固定在构成船舶双层底的底座上。
它在横向借助于侧楔垫螺栓，在纵向借助于端楔垫螺栓固定。
曲轴安放在机座横梁的轴承上，这些轴承称作主轴承。
每个轴承由两块轴瓦组成，轴瓦由在机座上加工出的瓦座支撑，用双头螺栓的轴承盖固定。
推力轴承位于发动机的尾部，可同机座制成一体也可同机座分开。
在机座上平面装有由若干铸铁或锻钢制成的A字形机架，机架安装在机座的横梁上，并用螺栓固定。
A形机架顶部有一个结实的框架结构叫扫气箱。
该扫气箱分若干段，每段均带有垂直法兰，通过螺栓可将它们在链传动装置前1～3缸的部分连成一体，链传动装置后4～6缸的部分连成一体。
链传动装置将曲轴和凸轮轴连在一起，封闭在链传动箱的壳体内。
二、气缸和气缸盖在扫气箱上部，每个气缸装有一个坚固的铸铁框架。
这些框架称作气缸体或冷却水套，并带有垂直法兰，与扫气箱一样，可用螺栓将各框架连成首尾两组。
基座、机架和气缸体用长贯穿螺栓连到一起，形成一个较大的坚实结构，减少了使用时产生的变形及振动。
气缸套由铸铁制造，缸套表面有时镀铬。
气缸套向下延伸到扫气箱。
缸套与扫气箱顶部的密封由像胶圈实现，像胶圈安装在缸套上切削的环槽内。
在气缸套伸入扫气箱内的部分有一列称为扫气口的开口。
气口的高度是这样布置的，当活塞位于下止点时，活塞上缘刚好打开气口。
气口在缸套上以大约20°的倾角制成，其结果是使扫气旋转。
各缸顶部由特殊耐热钢制成的缸盖封闭。
缸盖装在缸套顶部的平面上，并由机加工的凸肩定位。
密封圈嵌入在缸盖锥形部分车削的环槽中。
将密封圈嵌入锥形面时必须十分小心。
气缸盖和气缸套用旋入缸体中的双头螺栓固定。
缸套上有钻孔用于润滑，新型的缸套在其最上部还有钻孔用于冷却。
每个缸盖上有一个大型的中心孔，用于安装排气阀，还有两到三个孔用于装喷油器，还有些孔用来安装起动阀、安全阀、示功阀以及作为排气阀冷却水腔的进出口。
柴油机结构（II）一、活塞及活塞杆活塞由其下部一铸铁制成的活塞裙以及上部一耐热钢制成的活塞头组成。
它们用螺栓连在一起并固定在活塞杆上。
活塞部件相互间的位置由活塞头上车削的凹槽和定位销来固定。
每个活塞上装有5～6道活塞环，活塞环装在头部镀铬的环槽中，最上面的2～3道活塞环是带斜切口的窄环；紧接下去的2道活塞环是带有重叠搭口的宽环，最下面的那道环是刮油环。
所以活塞环顶部和底部的外缘都稍有倒角，以便在新活塞环磨合期间缸套上留有油膜。
为了控制热应力，某些现代柴油机采用薄壁集中冷却活塞。
在这种情况下，活塞头内部有一插件，它用来对冷却液流导向，以增强传统的“鸡尾震荡”效应。
活塞杆从顶部法兰到与十字头中心相对位置处镗孔。
一根长管从此孔插入几近孔底。
管的外径小于孔的直径，因此在活塞杆和管子之间形成了一个环形空间。
活塞杆的下端直径减小，插入十字头内孔中，并用螺帽将十字头与活塞杆紧固。
活塞杆上装有定位销，以确保各部件的正确装配。
在十字头两端轴颈处，各装有十字头滑块。
十字头滑块由发动机机架内的十字头导板导向。
十字头滑块在十字头上的位置由定位销确定，并用锥头螺栓紧固在十字头上。
十字头滑块表面浇有白合金，为确保提供足够的滑油，白合金表面开有水平沟槽。
十字头短且坚固，轴承的结构使轴承与轴颈间的承受压力沿整个轴承长度均匀分布。
为改善轴承工作条件，在后来的设计中，减省了轴承承受压力，提高了圆周速度。
活塞由强力润滑系统供给的油来冷却。
冷却油经管路导入，经伸缩管或铰接管及活塞杆内的环形空间流进活塞的冷却空间，再由活塞经活塞杆内管、十字头中的管道以及开槽管排入发动机上装有观察镜的“控制箱”中。
曲轴箱与扫气箱之的密封，通过位于扫气箱底部的活塞杆填料箱来完成。
每个填料箱都装有2个密封环和3个刮油环。
密封环装在最上面，它分为四段，通过圈簧将其箍紧在活塞杆周围。
二、连杆和主轴承十字头轴承和曲柄销轴承都由铸钢制成，分成上下两部分，由紧配螺栓紧固在连杆上。
其间，以调整轴承间隙（约0.20～0.30mm）。
主轴承支撑曲轴，每道由两片轴瓦组成。
瓦背由铸钢制成，表面浇有白合金并开有适当形状的油槽。
轴瓦由轴承盖和双头螺栓紧固，并用不同厚度的垫片调至必要的间隙（约0.30mm）。
所有的轴承都由发动的强力润滑系统来润滑，所提供的滑油一部分通过管道流到各个主轴承盖，一部分流到十字头，再由十字头通过连杆中的通道流到曲柄销轴承。
三、曲轴曲轴是组合式的。
对于半组合式曲轴，一个曲柄销和两个曲柄臂作为一体。
锻造的主轴颈以红套的方式插入铸钢制成的曲柄臂中。
在全组合式结构中，曲柄臂被红套在主轴曲颈和曲柄相互错开以使不同的曲柄间有相同的夹角。
为了平衡所需，在曲柄销轴颈上钻有较大的孔。
冷却水系统若不采取防范措施，工作循环的高温将很快使气缸、缸盖和活塞的金属升温。
有必要使活塞环的温度足够低，以便其周围的滑油能够存在，其他机械机构如喷油器、排气阀、起动空气阀必须保持一定的温度。
在此温度下，它们能令人满意地工作并保持润滑，而且构成燃烧室的金属部件必须保持足够低温以免失去机械强度。
机器的冷却是通过冷却液在发动机内部孔道中循环流动来实现的。
最常见的冷却剂是淡水。
滑油有时用来冷却活塞，因滑油漏入曲轴箱不会引起麻烦。
与水相比，滑油因比热容低，故所需油量约为水的两倍。
这些冷却液携带的热量在热交换器中传给海水，并进而排入海中，冷却液因此被冷却并为再次进行机器循环作好了准备。
海水不直接进入现代发动的冷却腔，是因为它有腐蚀性且易于残留沉积物。
淡水冷却系统低速柴油机的冷却系统可分为两个独立的系统：一个用于冷却气缸套、气缸盖、排气阀和涡轮增压器，另一个用于冷却活塞。
现代船舶采用两种冷却系统，闭式系统和开式系统。
在闭式冷却系统中，发动机的缸套、热交换器和循环泵构成了一个连续的回路，不对外敞开。
发动机的缸套冷却水在离开发动机后进入一海水循环的冷却器一然后到缸套冷却水循环泵，之后被泵入缸套、缸头、排气阀和涡轮增压器。
然而，必须为因水温的增加和空气的进入并滞留在系统内而产生膨胀以及补偿漏泄设置装置。
这可由一小型水柜来实现。
该柜直通大气，且放置在比系统内任何点均高的位置，以便补偿系统内容积的变化。
通常在系统水泵的吸入端连接一高置水柜，这样可以使空气吸入系统的机会减少。
水柜的是以小安装高度可基于保持热交换器中的淡水压力高于其中的海水压力。
以确保万一发生内部漏泄时，海水不能进行淡水系统。
或者，以在缸套内保持避免气蚀的最小压力为基准。
即使蒸汽泡和空气囊不会引起麻烦，闭式系统也通常需设放气装置。
细小的放气管从系统内任何较高位置引至膨胀水柜顶部，以释放冷却中的空气。
系统中有加热器以利于在起动发动机前用热水暖机。
缸套冷却水的进机温度可通过缸套水冷却器的旁通调节。
通过冷却器的水量或旁通量经三通阀调节。
温度的调节通常是维持确定的离机出口温度，而不考虑负荷、转速或海水温度。
活塞冷却系统可以是开式系统，它采用与闭式系统相似的元件，只是不用高置水箱而代之以回水箱，且透气管通向在机舱高处的观察镜或观察漏斗。
观察镜作为液流指示器。
独立的活塞冷却系统可将从活塞冷却填料密封处来的污物限制在活塞冷却系统内。
燃油喷油器要求在喷嘴前端进行精确的温度控制，温度过高将引起喇叭结炭，温度过低会引起腐蚀。
通常（为喷油器）设置一个冷却系统，该系统要么是缸套冷却水系统的一个分支，要么是一个完全独立的回路，无论是哪种情况，均有一个独立的热交换器或冷却柜及一些调节装置。
进入喷油器的冷却水流独立于进入缸套冷的却水流。
海水冷却系统在发动机内循环的各种冷却液自身被海水冷却。
通常，滑油、缸套和活塞冷却系统都使用独立的冷却器，各冷却器通过海水循环冷却。
有些现代船舶使用的中央冷却系统，仅有一个大型的海水循环冷却器冷却淡水，其他各独立的冷却器则用淡水循环冷却。
由于较少的设备与海水接触，从而大大降低了因海水而引起的腐蚀。
在通常的海水冷却系统中，两台海水循环泵中的一个泵将海水从吸入口吸进，一路提供给滑油冷却器、缸套水冷却器及活塞水冷却器，然后排出船外；另一路直接用来冷却增压空气（用于直接驱动式二冲程柴油机）。
在紧急情况下，例如，万一淡水冷却器或造水机出现损坏，只需将盲板法兰卸去，海水泵就能向淡水冷却系统供应海水。
第8课燃油系统燃油是影响发动机的运行与保养的重要的因素之一。
在选用燃油时，有十多种因素不需要考虑，其中影响燃烧的因素有：燃油粘度，十六烷值和发热值；硫分、残炭值以及灰分是决定燃烧产物形成的因素；而发动机的维修保养与燃油的闪点、凝点、相对密度、粘度以及水分和机械杂质含量有很大的关系。
燃油在发动机中所做的功，不仅取决于燃油本身，而且也取决于燃油所处的工作条件，这种工作条件此处即燃油系统。
