●Exercise 1 — Brainstorming and Structuring

Communication Point

Organising your points in a topic can help you to speak with more fluidity. While you're given some subtopics on the verbal prompt card, this does not mean you shouldn't organise it further. A useful exercise is first to brainstorm possible ways to divide up your talk. Then you can add more mini-subtopics.

Exercise Instructions

Think of as many ways as you can to talk about the following topics:

(1) What is it?/What is it like?

(2) How did you get it?

(3) What is it used for?

(4) Why do you think it important?

E.g.: My computer is important.

colour (black, pink), why

size (monitor), why

price, brand (Legend), the type of the computer (desktop, laptop), why

A Chinese Festival or Holiday

Imagine you have been asked to give a speech on a topic related to Chinese culture. You have chosen a holiday or festival that Chinese people celebrate. Tell the interviewer:

·How you feel about the holiday or festival

Some Background: The spring festival is the most important one for Chinese, just like Christmas in your country. The spring festival occurs in either January or February/on the first day of Chinese lunar calendar. It is a festival for people to get together at home.

What does friendship mean to you?

What do you think is the difference between friendship and love? What do you think is the difference between friendship and love?

In my opinion, there are several differences between friendship and love. Friendship is much looser kind of emotion, but love is much deeper kind of emotion. Friendship is usually goes before love. Do you think love will also become friendship in return. Friendship takes place between either the same genders/sexes or different genders/sexes. Love takes place between only a female and a male. Friendship can be shared, but love can not.

Teacher --> Education

What do you think is the biggest problem in the Chinese Educational System? There are too many/much ... and not enough ... The teachers always focus too much on the students' scores. There are too many examinations the students have to take. Students from different places of China will be evaluated with different standards after taking the examination. The Chinese Government does not invest enough money in the Educational System.
