3. First-person narration is used in this chapter. "I" is the narrator, not the author, of the story. This narrator is at the same time, the protagonist. This immediate and compelling quality of the firstperson narration enables the reader to follow the action of the story closely as if it were taking place before his eyes. It can also allow the reader to know what is going on in the mind of the narrator. The first-person narration helps to achieve the artistic effect in the description of the battle royal. In addition, this novel is an account of the boy' s journey from ignorance to enlightenment as he searches for his self-identity. Most of the activities inevitably become psychological, and therefore the first person narration creates authenticity.

IV. Questions (Appreciation) 1. The chapter begins with "it goes a long way back, some twenty years', showing the following parts are his reflection of the past. In the first paragraph, the main idea of searching for identity is conveyed by "I was looking for myself" and "I am nobody but myself. What happens in the battle royal is related to the central idea.

For another, in this battle royal, the black boys were blindfolded, signifying that the white cloth (in coincidence with the color of the white) prevents the boy from seeing clearly and understanding himself, the other black men. and the white men and the society he is in. It is the white that blocks the boy and the other black boys' vision and keeps them from knowing the truth. He gets lost again and again in the novel, which throws him in disappointments. He fails to appreciate his black culture and blindly accepts the white men's value and tries to get recognized by the white society.

For one thing, in this chapter, as Ellison himself said, "The boys are blindfolded and forced to fight each other for the amusement of the white observers. " The blacks were treated with utter contempt and hatred. The scene is symbolic of the place of all American black people in the whitedominated society.
