We have spoken of marriage as a formal contract. It should be noted, however, that this contract does not 1 the same form in different societies, the 2 of a man and a woman is given the status of a legal marriage by being registered by an official recognized by the state. In some African societies, 3 marriage has nothing to do 4 an official registration of this kind but is legalized by the formal exchange of goods. Generally it is bridegroom who is required to make a 5 of goods to the bride’s kin, though sometimes a payment is also made by the bridegrooms kin to that of the bride.
Among the Nuer, 6 living in Southern Sudan, the payment made to the bride’s kin, 7 as bridewealth is in the 8 of cattle. Once the amount of bridewealth is agreed 9 , and the payment is made, the marriage becomes a legal union and the offspring of the union become the acceptable children of the husband. They remain his children even 10 the wife subsequently leaves him to live with another man.

Television is the most effective brainwashing medium ever invented by man, advisers known to be true. Children are affected by television in 1 we scarcely understand. In the fall of 1971, I was assigned a story 2 a young white woman living on the fringe of Boston’s black ghetto. Her car had 3 out of gas. She had gone to a filling station with a can and was reluming to her car when she was trapped in an alley by a gang of black youths. The gang poured gasoline over her and set fire to her. She died 4 her burns. It was later established that some of the youths involved had, 5 the night before the killing, watched on television of rerun of an old movie in which a drifter is 6 on fire by an adolescent gang. There is some kind of strange inductive process at work here. To see something on television robs it 7 its reality and then when the same thing is acted out it is like the reenactment of something unreal. In 8 words, when the gang set fire to the girl, they were imitating what they had seen on a screen 9 they themselves on a screen, and a story. I don’t known we have even begun to realize how powerful a medium television is. It has already 10 very clear that the candidate with the most television appeal wins the election.
