(2)The American economic development after WWII increased its contact with other countries. Mark the beginning of intercultural studies
Intercultural Awareness : the ability to understand cultures
♦ 1. IA has become a prerequisite for successful IC.
EX: global village
♦ 2. IA is required if the learner is to achieve the communicative competence, which is now universally considered as the goal of language learning.

Culture conflict
1.4.2 Ethnocentrism and Culture Orientation ♦ Ethnocentrism: the tendency to view one’s own culture as the standard for all cultures. ♦ Culture orientation: how much one should change to accept the culture of the target language.

Silent Language

Intercultural communication studies: the study of communication – both verbal and nonverbal – between members of different cultures.
gestures eye contact facial expressions…
Increasing IA for learners of EFL means learning the cultural use of the English language and understanding the cultural values and attitudes of native English speakers.
EX:“He go to work” vs. “How old she is ?”
♦ 3. IA becomes especially important when a learner reaches the advanced stage and reads authentic English texts.
1.4.1 The vastness of the concept and goals † including not only material but also nonmaterial things † being too complex and too open-ended † being like an iceberg
EX: English pillar-boxes
♦ 4. IA cannot grow naturally, it has to be trained.
EX: native child’s language learning (form & cultural meaning)
Intuitive competence直观能力: The natural inclination that people are naturally inclined to interpret things with their own cultural reference, which is sth native speakers possess but foreign learners have to be trained in.
Studying a second language without learning the culture is like learning how to drive a car by studying a driver’s manual and never getting behind a steering wheel. -- K. J. Irving
When we are exposed to a new culture, it is the similarities between cultures that surprise us as much as the differences
Examples: ♥Spring Festival ♥ 12 zodiac animals ♥ proverb : love me love my dog vs. 爱屋及乌 time is money vs. 一寸光阴一寸金
What can you infer from the following pictures? What are they about?
On the surface : art, music, literature and customs etc. To an anthropologist: the way of life, attitudes and behavior patterns of a people. Classified into two categories: (1) Culture in capital C: the traditional concept of culture as great achievements, refinement and artistic endeavor. (2) Culture in small c: “way of life” culture.
Understanding differences will help us know where communication barriers lie. Understanding similarities will help us get closer.
Two categories of hundreds of approaches: (1) Experiential approach the best way to learn target culture but might be impossible (2) Intellectual approach (classroom knowledge) the only alternative though incomplete
Since the 1980s, Chinese philosophers, historians, sociologists, comparative literature and comparative linguists, translators, language teachers have been engaged in a systematic study of IC.
