Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the British Consulate here in Chongqing, I would like to welcome
you all to this seminar this morning. I would also like to thank our partners and
friends in the Chongqing government, particularly Mr. He, for their support
today.
I want to briefly say three things this morning:
The first is that we in the UK recognize how important management of water
resources is in China and here in Chongqing. The Munical Government of
Chongqing has an impressive program of investment in improving the quality
of water supply. We want to work together with you on that and British
companies have already been doing some successful work here in Chongqing
in this sector.
Secondly, I want to say how pleased I am to see such a good delegation here
from the UK. The delegation brings expertise from government, from British
Water, and, probably most importantly, from companies with a range of skills
and experience in water treatment, equipment and other areas.
Finally, today‟s event is about water. But I also hope that it w ill act as another
example of the UK‟s interest and engagement here in Chongqing across a wide
range of sectors and subjects. We‟ve had a steady flow of trade missions and
senior visitors coming through Chongqing recently. We continue to work to
improve our relations in science and technology, education and culture. And we
are growing our visa operation here in Chongqing to make it more convenient
for people to visit the UK.
So I wish you every success to today‟s seminar. I hope it will lead to deeper
relations between Chongqing and the UK.
Thank you all for your support.
篇首发言人即用了一个On behalf of …, I‟d like to express my/our warmest welcome / sincere/heart-felt gratitude to ……
Mister President, honourable ministers, excellencies, distinguished delegates, ladies and gentlemen,
First and foremost, let me express my heartfelt gratitude for your achievements. As I stated on Monday, health problems are increasingly shaped by powerful forces outside the direct control of the health sector. Up against these forces, public health has to struggle to take a pro-active role.
You have seized opportunities to do so. Resolutions such as those endorsing the action plan for noncommunicable diseases, and for reducing the harmful use of alcohol, are prime examples. They establish a foundation for national and collective strategic actions, actions that have great preventive power, though we all know that the way ahead will not be easy.
You have taken a huge step forward with the item on Public Health, Innovation, and Intellectual Property. With this, public health leaps ahead in addressing two fundamental and long-standing needs: to improve access to existing interventions, and to include diseases of the poor in the drive to develop new products.
This is a major breakthrough for public health, and I congratulate you all. This is a breakthrough that will benefit many millions of people for many years to come. This is a contribution to fairness in health, and this is
pro-active public health at its very best.
In other areas, you have given WHO a clear mandate to perform its role. Concerning climate change, you want the Secretariat to make those sectors shaping environmental and energy policies more keenly aware of the high stakes for human health. Countries, and especially small island
