After

Woman--
relaxes on the stifling roof, smoking, reading, sleeping, and getting a tan Men-- sweat and struggle to work The heat in Lessing's story refers to the actual temperature , the men's rising passions, and also the tension between the two genders, classes. By selecting three men with varying life roles, a youngster, a newlywed, and a family man, Lessing illustrates both a range of attitudes toward women and sex and how the progressive stages in life shape the men's views.
Lessing was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature. In doing so the Swedish Academy described her as "that epicist of the female experience, who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny“.Lessing was the eleventh woman and the oldest ever person to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 2001, Lessing was awarded the David Cohen Prize for a lifetime's achievement in British Literature. In 2008, The Times ranked her fifth on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".

When asked about which of her books she considers most important, Lessing chose the Canopus in Argos science fiction series. These books show, from many different perspectives, an advanced society‘s efforts at forced evolution. The Canopus series is based partly on Sufi concepts. Earlier works of "inner space" fiction like Briefing for a Descent into Hell and Memoirs of a Survivor also connect to this theme.
The whole—Free Women and the notebooks—becomes The Golden Notebook.
The
Golden Notebook is considered a feminist classic by some scholars, but the author herself wrote that its theme of mental breakdowns as a means of healing and freeing one's self from illusions had been overlooked by critics. She also regretted that critics failed to appreciate the exceptional structure of the novel.

Lessing‘s fiction is commonly divided into three distinct phases: the Communist theme (1944-1956), when she was writing radically on social issues (and returned to in The Good Terrorist (1985)),the psychological theme (1956-1969), and after that the Sufi (伊斯兰苏菲派) theme, which was explored in a science fiction setting in the Canopus(老人星系列) series.
Lessing weaves her story around each man's different response to the woman's presence and to the heat:
Tom's
reactions are mostly interior and secretive.

background
Doris
May Taylor was born in Kermanshah, Persia (Iran), on October 22, 1919. In 1925 the Taylor family moved to Southern Rhodesia Lessing‘s childhood was spent in the hills near the farm. She attended convent school(修道院学 校) until an eye problem forced her to drop out at age 14. At that point her self-education began, mostly with the reading of the major nineteenthcentury Russian, French, and English novelists.

The Golden Notebook
The
Golden Notebook was Lessing's most ambitious and perhaps her most misunderstood book. Taken by critics as a latter-day tract on feminism, the book does have a layer of feminist philosophy. But at its core, it has more to do with the rights of the individual in a society than with the role of women.
The Golden Notebook is a carefully constructed work that builds on a short novel called Free Women. The main character of Free Women, Anna Wulf, a writer keeps a series of notebooks—black, red, yellow, and blue—which punctuate the novel. In effect, the heroine of Free Women steps out of the novel to comment on its action.
In
1938 she moved to Salisbury, took an office job, and began writing. A year later, she married Frank Wisdom. The marriage, which produced a son and a daughter, ended in divorce in 1943. In 1945 she married Gottfried Lessing. That marriage also ended in divorce, in 1949, after producing one son.
