Oerlikon aims to become the trusted partner for OEMs in India: In September, the groundbreaking ceremony for the third manufacturing plant took place in the automobile hub of Sanand in the state of Gujarat.

Segment Drive Systems commenced work on its third manufacturing plant in India with a groundbreaking ceremony on September 14, 2013 on the site which is located in the automobile hub of Sanand in the state of Gujarat. The ground-breaking ceremony involved offering prayers to the almighty for successful completion of the project and was led by Mr Heriberto Diarte, CEO of Segment Drive Systems, in the presence of Mr. Khurshed Thanawalla, Country Representative, Oerlikon Group, India, and senior management team of Drive Systems India.

Being socially responsible

The new plant will be spread across more than 30 acres, create almost 1000 new jobs, and will be a showcase for Oerlikon’s commitment to environmental susta inability. The plant will be a truly sustainable site; more than a third of the site will be green and we will have an energy efficient building, resulting in 30% reduction in energy requirements, plus zero discharge of water and 100% rain water harvesting and waste water management. The goal is to attain the cove ted “IGBC gold certification” status in all aspects of sustainability and be a trendsetter amongst our peers in the India region.

Building on our strengths

Sanand is an established hub for automobile companies and is a key area for good engineers specializing in assembling products and prototyping. The new plant will enable Drive Systems to make high-tech products and solutions at competitive costs by leveraging India’s strength as best cost labor market and with numerous of our existing and potential customers being in Gujarat it will give Oerlikon an added advantage of being close to them. While the Oerlikon Graziano plant in Noida is more specialized in manufacturing high-performance gears and synchronizers, and the Oerlikon Fairfield in Belgaum assemnles drive units for industrial applications, at the Gujarat plant the range of products will be from transmission synchronizers, for which India is already recognized as an international competence center, to assemblies for full and final transmissions for high-end trucks, off-road applications and passenger cars.
