Translation 1: Xue Ba raised his staff with both hands to bring it down on Lin Chong’s head. But quicker than words can tell, from behind the pine tree came a thunderous roar as a solid iron rod shot forward, intercepted the staff and sent it flying into the sky. Then out leaped a big fat monk. “I’ve been listening quite a while,” he yelled. (Translated by Sydney Shapiro) Translation 2: Raising his staff with both hands, Xue Ba was going to strike a blow on Lin Chong’ head. The moment Xue Ba raised his staff, with a thunderous roar, a Buddhist iron rod flew over to the staff, shooting it into the distant sky. With this, a fat monk jumped out, yelling: “I’ve been overhearing you for a long time already.”

After learning this course, the students should be able to: Familiarize themselves with basic sociosemiotic translation approach and know how to do C-E translation effectively under its guidance. Meet the demands set by “Syllabus for English Majors at Advanced Level” and score high marks in C-E translation part of TEM-8 Have a good command of the basic differences between Chinese and English at various levels Know how to analyze the original texts and translations, and how to make comparisons between different versions Conduct preliminary research in translation studies
