Graphs and Charts
Ways of presenting geographical data
Why use graphs and charts?
Presenting data in graphs and charts helps us to see patterns in the data more clearly. When we present data in this way we might see things that we might not have seen when just looking at the set of raw figures. It helps us to show those patterns to others too. Certain types of chart help us to explore links between sets of data which is great for investigations……
What else?
You can combine some of the above methods with maps. For example, you can put a bar to show a total figure, at a place where the information shown in that bar was collected. You could add on other bars from other sets of data for comparison… What other charts can be combined with maps?
Great for when a total figure is made up of different sets of figures
This bar chart allows you to show negative data…
This chart allows you to chow negative data and could be used if you have had a score system with a negative scale
Cluster Bar Charts
These are great for showing sets of the same type of data collected at different time periods.
More examples of bar charts….
Composite Bar Charts
A Kite Chart
Flow Charts
These help you to show cause and effect…great for developing explanations and organising your thoughts….
Spidergrams
Useful for just about anything, especially for information that cannot be displayed graphically…
Rose Diagram
Radar Graph (aka Star Chart)
Super for showing scores for different criteria. You can build up several different lines on the same graph either directly on the one piece of paper, or on overlays.
Pie Charts
Pie Charts Become Doughnuts
Use Excel to turn pie charts into ring or doughnut charts….
Bar Charts
Keep the bars on charts separate unless showing continuous datshowing changes in the same thing over time
Composite Line Graph
You can use this to show different sets of information and compare them - a more complex way of showing data
Scatter Graph With A Difference!
This chart shows that more people prefer hamburgers with between 2 an 10% non meat filler and between 38% and 65% fat. The least number of people prefer bugers with around 17% non meat filler and 60% fat.
Proportional Arrows
Proportional circles (Can be proportional semi-circles if showing two sets of data)
Proportional Circles Combined With Pie Charts
Radar Graph 2
Scatter Graphs
Useful for helping you to see if there is a relationship (correlation) between two sets of information.. You can see of one figure changes if there is a corresponding reaction in the other figure)
Dot Maps
Chloropleth Maps – use different shades of the same colour
Photos
Photos are great and can be used to back up some of the data that you have shown in your charts and graphs as well as real images…
