Autumn in Peiping
Autumn, no matter where it is, is always wonderful. However, it is particularly clear, quiet and dismal when autumn come to the North. The reason I come from Hangzhou to Qingdao, even from Qingdao to Peiping without regarding a thousand miles as very distant is merely to taste and experience autumn in the North.
Autumn, of course, also come to the South. But here vegetation withers slowly away, air is moist, the color of the heaven seems light, and sometimes it is often windy and rainless. I, a single person who is among these citizen who live in Suzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou or Xiamen, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, can just feel cool and refreshing a little bit when I walk muddleheaded through them. The flavor, color, antistatic conception and posture of autumn are invariably not enough to be looked, tasted and enjoyed. Autumn is neither famed flowers nor good wine, but a kind of situation which is slightly open and intoxicating. It is improper for the process of appreciating autumn.
It is nearly more than decade I had never viewed autumn in the North. I always reminded of the Taoranting Park’s reed catkins, the shadow of willows in Diaoyutai, the singing of insects in the western hill, the night moon in Jade Spring and the toll from Tanzhe Temple when autumn comes every year in the South. In Peiping, even you do not get out, but rent a smashed room for the host in imperial city to live in. When you get up in the morning, then make a cup of strong verdurous sky and hear the sound that trained pigeons fly over the blue heaven. From the beneath of locust leaves, facing to the east and counting carefully a ray of percolating sunbeam, or in the middle of destroyed wall, facing silently with flaring morning glories’blue flowers, you are naturally able to feel though autumn artistic conception. As to morning glories, I consider that blue or white flowers are the best, atropupureus comes better and damask is good. It is the best that there are several sparse taper and long autumn grass under the morning glories to set it off.
The locust trees in the North are kinds of ornament which can also associate with autumn. The deciduous stamen or pistil which is look like a flower but actually not a flower will completely pave ground in the morning. When you set your feet on it,
there is no sound and flavor, and you can just feel very superfine and soft feelings. After dustmen sweep streets under the shadow of tree, there is several lines that brooms left. It looks exquisite and leisure; even it feels somewhat subconsciously desolate. As the recall what the ancients said that people can know the autumn’s coming from a withered sycamore tree leaf, maybe it is the same depth of implication.
The feeble sound of harvest flies is the specialty in the North. In Peiping, the tree is growing anywhere and the houses are low, so no matter where, people can hear their singing. In the South people must go to the outskirts or climb mountains can hear it. Like cricket and mouse in Peiping, the tweet of the harvest flies is virtually like insects which foster in every family.
Besides, there are also autumn rains here. The autumn rains in the North seem more surprising, more flavorous and more reasonable than the South.。
