The immigration flows result in a multi-racial America, each racial and ethnical group carrying their own subculture with distinctive characteristics from others, which is the root of cultural conflicts.

How do you think of the behavior of the young white police officer Tom Hanson? How can you understand prejudice from Crash? Try to analyze the roots for so many crashes in the US. How can a person live in peace in the society in the movie? Or how can a nonnative American adapt to a society described in the movie? Tom Hanson Daniel Ruiz

Cultural Conflicts in the USA --- the Result of Immigration
The United States is a called a melting-pot, and it is creating a brand new multicultural society. Different races of people pour into the United States from all around the world, and each of them brings their own culture and religion. Each group of people is struggling to preserve and expand the influence of their own culture and religion. Consequently, conflicts emerge and become a persistent social problem to American society. Although these are problems need solving, the US society shows “vigorous power” as its major characteristics. Conflicts between cultures are not only the source of the social problems, but the positive boosting factor that keeps the American society forward.

Crash 撞车 (2005)
On the American continents, there are two long-continuing immigration movements. The first movement from Asia began probably 25 thousand years ago when Siberian tribes were in search of new hunting grounds or of refuge from the pursuing enemies. The second migration from Europe and Africa began with the expansion of Europe from the 16th century. The first European immigrants in American history came from England and the Netherlands. Attracted by reports of great economic opportunities and religious and political freedom, immigrants from many other countries flocked to the United States in increasing numbers, the flow reaching a peak in the years 1892-1924.

Racism in USA --- a Social Problem
视听说教程
Racism in the United States has been a major problem in America since it was colonized. Historically, the country has been dominated by a settler society of religiously and ethnically diverse whites. By 1830 the Northern states had all outlawed slavery while the Southern states maintained this institution until Lincoln’s famous Emancipation Proclamation of slaves in 1863, and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1865. But it was always practiced wholesale discrimination against black Americans even after the abolition of slavery. Some states even passed segregation laws in schools, housing, restaurants and other public facilities. They were badly treated and institutionalized discrimination kept blacks in the lowest-paid jobs. Blacks tend to be barred from positions of authority over other workers, and instead to lower-paying jobs further down the work-place hierarchy. And they can only earn about a third of white incomes. They also kept blacks off the voters’ rolls and prevent them from exercising their political rights.

Racial discrimination is frequently seen in America’s judicature. According to an investigative report published by the United Nations, for the same crime the penalty against the colored can be twice or even thrice as severe as against the white. Blacks sentenced to death for killing whites are four times as many as whites given death penalty for killing blacks. The US Department of Justice reported on March 12, 2001 that threats by the police with force against blacks and ethnic Latin-Americans are twice as possible as against whites. Racial discrimination was largely criminalized in the mid-20th century.
