The discovery of diamonds in the new Dutch colonies around 1900 led to an English invasion. After the Dutch’s independence from Britain, there was an uneasy power-sharing between the two groups until the1940’s,when the Afrikaner National Party managed to become a strong majority. Strategists in the Nation Party invented apartheid as a means to cement their control over the economic and system. At the early stage, aim of the apartheid was to maintain white domination while extending racial separation. About the author
Alan Paton (1903-1988) was born in Pietermaritzburg ,
South Africa. Owing to the influence of his father, a Scot who had emigrated to South Africa , he kept an interest in books and nature throughout his life, two passions which figure Paton’s prominently in his work. Paton s most famous novel is Cry , the Beloved Country, which was published in 1984, and by the time he died ,it had sold over 15 million copies.

Cognac is a brandy produced from white grapes ,which are drown in the strictly defined of the Charentes (Department 16 and 17 )and a small part of Deux Severs. This region is divided into growths based on soil characteristics that are reflected in the final product. Cognac is the result of blending and aging of different eau-de-vie vintages. An unblended ,straight vintage Cognac is very rare and available only in small quantities .Cognac is aged in Limousin oak casks (barrels). Its aging period is between 2to 50 plus year. It is generally accepted that an eau-devie of 50 years or so has reached maximum age .It is usually transferred into the glass demijohns to stop the ageing process. The age is indicated on the labels. It reflect the youngest eau-de-vie used in the Cognac blend. The age is base around the legal limits during which wine is distilled, the distillation period ends at midnight of the 31st March each year. Thus the following age indication applies: V.S. (Very Special) Reserve must be two and half yeas old V.O. (Very Old), V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale )four and half years old X.O. (extra Old), Reserve six and half years or older These label designations indicate more of a taste and style of a blended Cognac.
