Invisible man

Invisible man was written by Ralph Waldo Ellison, who was an American novelist, literary critic, scholar and writer. He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Ellison is best known for his novel invisible man, which won the national book award in 1953. In 1955 Ellison went to abroad to Europe to travel and lecture before settling for a time in Rome Italy where he wrote an essay that appeared in a Banthern anthology called A New Southern Harvest in 1957. The book’s main theme is to never doubt the invisible. He also wrote shadow and act (1964),a collection of political, social and critical essays, and going to the territory in 1986.

At the beginning of the story, I was attracted by the stranger who described as a cool and mysterious man. I thought the writer wanted to tell a detective story which including nervous and suspensive plots. However, after finishing reading, I found that the story was more wonderful than I expected. The invisible man, from the definition, we know that Griffin is a person not a ghost. Generally speaking, he is the most talented physicist in the world, who could make himself invisible. But the marble hearted society makes his success into a visionary hope. He was unwilling to publish his research results, because each tries to cheat the other in the world, there is no any trust in society. He was forced to change himselves to an invisible man. He thought an invisible man could bring an endless happiness. Beyond his expectation, he was in trouble after his transformation. He became selfishness step by step, even embarked on the criminal road.

To make a success without struggle is impossible, there is much pain and sorrow beyond the imagination. The society did not hold a fair stage to show his talent and

Griffin himself did not hold a positive attitude, which lead to the tragedy.

It is thus clear that people is selfish. To for his own benefit, Griffin protected his achievement being copied at all costs. To for his own benefit, Kemp and Marvel went back on their world. What a terrible society. Griffin is a miserable man, so do others. Behave better, world become more splendid. the end of his story is also the beginning. He states that he finally has realized that he must honor his individual complexity and remain true to his own identity without sacrificing his responsibility to the community. He says that he finally feels ready to emerge from underground.

The novel addresses many of the social and intellectual issues facing African-Americans in the early 20 century, including black nationalism, the relationship between black identity and Marxism, and the reformist racial policies of Booker T. Washington, as well as issues of individuality and personal identity. One may undermine one’s enemies from a position of invis ibility, but one cannot make significant changes to the world. Accordingly, in the Epilogue the narrator decides to emerge from his hibernation, resolved to face society and make a visible difference. I learned since the world abandoned me, do not admit me, I will also turn my eyes into the inner world of my heart.
