Visceral manifestation theory takes a given anatomic knowledge as its basis, but it is mainly guided under the ancient philosophical thinking in China. It seeks the activity of internal organs from the integral investigation, or "determining the viscera from their pictures" and "operating the external to surmise the internal". Therefore the viscera in the visceral manifestation, are not simply the organs in anatomy, what is more, they means the physiological functions. The names of the viscera in Chinese medicine are generally the same as those of internal organs in Western medicine; however their connotations are quite different.
