Now our country is troubled with aging of population. As is shown in the table, the number of the population aged 60 and above in 1990 is 97.19 million, making up 8.8 percent of total population. It estimated that the number will rise to 230 million in 2020, and approach its peak to 410 million, which accounts for
27.4 percent of the total. That means one out of every four people will be elderly.
As for the issue of aging, its situation has been increasingly severe in spite of the fact that most people are still ignorant of the problems it brings about. Firstly, aging will hinder the development of our economy because there will be a
relative decline in working force with more people approach their old age.
Consequently, the productivity of the whole society is affected to some extent.
Secondly, the national expenditure on the elderly would always be on the rise, for more old people means more retirement pension, more medical expenses and so on. Thirdly, the children of the elderly would be heavily burdened. Besides working, they have to take care of their parents as well as their children. As the majority of them are only-child, a couple will have to support four parents, which would tire them out.
The rapidity of the population’s aging has made it more urgent for the adoption of counter measures. No doubt the key point is to build a solid economic foundation and, meanwhile, to improve social security, assurance and welfare system. Besides, family care and community services should be encouraged to guarantee that the elderly can enjoy their remaining years in happiness.
