Jiuwan HUTONG
Jiuwan HUTONG, as the name implies, has many rounds. From the east to west, at the length of less than 380m, kinds of rounds can be found everywhere. There are more than 13 rounds at Jiuwan HUTONG. Beijing HUTONG are always straight, but you will lost your direction if you get into Jiuwan HUTONG.
HUTONG originates from YUAN dynasty, the number of which reached more than 6,000 in Beijing. The earliest HUTONG are located between Chaoyang Mennei street and Dongsi, which are planned tidy. The distance between HUTONG is nearly same. The streets of north south trend are always called street, which are relatively wide. Such as Nanxiao street and Beixiao street from Beijing railway station to Chaoyang Mennei street. These street were mostly for carriage, so are called road too. The street of east west trend are HUTONG, which are relatively narrow and for pedestrian. What next to HUTONG is generally courtyard.
HUTONG is not just the vein and transportation of Beijing, but also the normal Peking men’s living place and the important stage of Beijing’s historical development. It writes down the changes of Beijing’s history, the faces of different eras; and is full of cultural spirit, like a museum of folk-custom that make a deep mark at Peking men’s social life.
The most narrow one—— Small Trumpet HUTONG
Small Trumpet HUTONG is located at the southeast of Xuanwu district. This HUTONG is in the shape of trumpet, whose south is wider than the north, there out its name. But there is Big Trumpet HUTONG at its west, so we call this HUTONG as Small Trumpet HUTONG. Small Trumpet HUTONG is the most narrow one in Beijing, it is only about 62cm at the middle part, which only allow one person to pass.
City is called HAOTE in Mongolian, when the Mongols established YUAN dynasty, they called the central plains’ city HAOTE too. Later HAOTE evolved into HUTONG and NONGTANG.
So, I think cultural protection is much more important than urban development. At the same time, we can develop our economy by cultural packing and attractive.

The oldest one—— Zhuanta HUTONG
Zhuanta HUTONG is around West Sipai tower. The name of Zhuanta HUTONG is come from a black brick tower located at there. This tower is the burial place of a eminent monk named Wansong, who is YUAN dynasty’s famous official Yelvchucai’s teacher. On the basis of historical data, Zhuanta HUTONG is as old as the black brick tower, is more than 600 years. From YUAN dynasty to QING dynasty, Zhuanta HUTONG is the entertainment center of Beijing all the time.
Mongolian is great harmony: HUTONG is the simplified version of YUAN dynasty’s political slogan “Mongolian is great harmony”.

The source of “HUTONG”
In Mongolian, the pronunciation of water well is close to HUTONG. In history, people in Beijing get water mainly from water well, hence water well became the represent of habitation, and then became the antonomasia of street. There out the word—HUTONG.

The shortest one—— One Foot Street
Although One Foot Street named street, it is still HUTONG, and is the shortest one in Beijing. It is not really one foot in length, but about 30m. In the old days, there were three shops at the north of One Foot Street, these shops were all for lettering. At the south of One Foot Street wear capacious wineskins, smithy, barbershop. One Foot Street is miniature of Beijing HUTONG.
The widest one—— Lingjing HUTONG
Lingjing Hutong is located in the center of the Xicheng District of Beijing City, where it lies between Fuyou Street in the east and Xidan North Street in the west. It crosses the Zaolin Yard, South Street of West Huangchenggen, Dongxie Street, Xinjian Hutong and Beiyin Hutong. The overall length is 664 meters (about 726 yards).
The longest one—— Legation Quarter
Legation Quarter, which was embassy district of old China and stretches from square east road of Tiananmen to Chongwen Mennei Street, overall length is about 1.6km, is the longest HUTONG of Beijing. After the second opium war of 1860, countries including England, France, America, Russia, Japan, Germany, etc, set up diplomatic mission at Legation Quarter.
HUTONG is the symbol of Beijing city, Beijing’s history, and Beijing people’s life. And HUTONG is also a kind of cultural heritage of Beijing. We need urban development, but as we all know, once the culture was lost, we won’t get it anymore.
