My wife Karen is good at gardening. No matter what she plants, it always seems to grow well. She once put a dead stick into the ground and turned it into a mango tree. Like dogs and cats that seem to naturally recognize a pet-friendly human, plants know my wife. She loves them and they reward her with fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Being a career military (军人)family, we've lived in many different places over the years. But no matter where we were stationed? one thing always remained the same: Karen, s gardens. In addition to the delicious fruits and vegetables, home gardens provide so much more. Flowering plants and their multi-colored flowers are lovely. Green is pleasing to the eye. Plants make us happy.

In days past, bees moved around in groups all over our yard. We admired them and they took no notice of us. Even the dogs learned to leave them alone. The bees came for the flowers.

At some point, the bees just stopped coming to visit. Where we used to entertain dozens at a time, we re lucky now if we get one or two. When I walk the dogs, the bees I used to see buzzing all over the neighborhood are now lying on the sidewalk, either still or moving around in a circle. I'm no beekeeper, but I'm pretty sure something is happening to the bees.

By chance? the three speakers at the Poway City Council meeting happened to be local beekeepers. All three expressed serious concern over the continued use of herbicides (除草剂)and insecticides (杀虫剂). Once considered harmless, both chemicals have since proven to be deadly for bees.

They call it Colony Collapse Disorder (蜂群崩溃综合症)and it is not a problem just for beekeepers. On the contrary, this might involve the whole human race. The reason is simple. Without bees, we lose most of the crops we rely upon for food.

D. Stopping using chemicals.

6.How does the author sound when telling the story?

A. Curious.

B. Worried.

C. Confused.

D. Humorous.

7.Where can we probably find this passage?

A. In a private diary.

B. In a travel brochure.

C. In a forum online.

D. In a book review.
