The analysis of English alogans

With the development of international trade, advertising translations are becoming more and more significant in the international communications. The English slogans play a very important role in products promotion,credibility gaining and building up products images. Through our research,we hope that we can master how to make full ues of knowledge to translate a slogan well.

①The definition of slogans:

In order to translate a slogan well,we have to know what the slogan is. The slogan is a kind of encouraging language,which is widely used as a propaganda. It is a special commeicial item repeatedly used for a long time.

②The traits of slogans:

First,unitary information but abundant connotation. Second, short sentences with fluency. Third, repeated application makes the products more impressed with the comsumers.

③The functions of slogans:

Firstly,it works as a bridge. Secondly,it makes us impressed with the products. Thirdly,it will cause the word-of-mouth effect. Last but not least,it represents a new conception of consumption.

④The examples of translated slogans:

Our group has taken a lot of photos around Zhangzhou City. Let’s take a few for examples. Here are some from Zhangzhou Hotel.

Ⅰ漳州市接待办公室→The Reception Office of Zhangzhou City(This one is good.)

Ⅱ服务总台→Reception Counter(This one is good.)

Ⅲ凌波楼→Linbo Building(This one has a mistake,for Chinese “凌” should be translated into “Ling”. So the better translation should be Lingbo Building.)

The following are from Zhongshan Park.

Ⅰ应急厕所→Emergency Toilets(This one is good.)

Ⅱ应急避险场所→EMERGENCY SHELTER(I think this one needn’t be capitalized, because we sometimes,especially in case of emergency,we maybe have no more time to understand this capitalized letters. So the better translation should be Emergency Shelter.)

Ⅲ应急疏散通道→Emergency evacuation routes(This one is good.)

Next are from Jiulong Park.

Ⅰ可回收→Recyclable(This one is good.)

Ⅱ不可回收→Non-recyclable(This one is good.)

Ⅲ无障碍通道→Wheelchair Accessble(There is a grammatical mistake in this slogan,that is,the spelling of accessible. So the better translation should be Wheelchair Accessible.)

Ⅳ应急医疗救护→Emergency Medical Treatment(This one is good.)

Let’s come to the slogans of Yonghui Supermarket.

Ⅰ乳饮料→MILK BEVERAGE(This one is good.)

Ⅱ推荐→RECOMMEND(This one is good.)

Ⅲ卷帘门→ROLLING SHUTTER DOOR(We find that the use of roller is also OK, so the translation is equal with ROLLER SHUTTER DOOR.)

In our classroom buildings,we also find a few “mistakes”.

Ⅰ语音室→Listening Room(It can be translated better in this way: Audio-visual Room. Because the room is not only used in listening but also in other purposes.)
