Thomas Hardy

The British famous writer Thomas Hardy was one of the excellent novelists of the Victorian age. He is a famous critical realistic writer. He delineated(勾画,描述) a lot of characters of tragedies, showing various persons’ enchantment.(魅力)

• Tess Durbeyfield is a 16-year-old simple country girl. In a chance ,Tess meets Alec d’Urberville, who finds himself attracted to Tess. Alec seduces (勾引,诱惑)and rapes Tess. Tess returns home, gives birth to a son, but died for illness.
Tess, a Pure but Tragic Woman
Pure: Tess’s characteristics of purity, resistance and conservative are the core of her characteristics. Tess’s father died, her whole family has nowhere to live. At this difficult time, Alex give them house、food and money, but Tess have to be his mistress. Clare decides to forgive his wife. He leaves Brazil, desperate to find her. When Tess saw Clare, her anger to Alex up to the highest point, she though her life was destroyed by Alex, so she killed Alex and become a fugitive(逃亡者) with Clare. She arrested five days later and was sentenced to death. (判处死刑)

Because most of Hardy’s novels take place in the "partly-real, partly-dream" county of Wessex, so his novels were called Wessex Novel(威塞克斯小说).
