Ⅴ. Saying the Same Thing Twice
In English, sentences that present as new information something that has just been said, or that is plainly implied in what has just been said, are considered a waste of the reader’s time. The more frequently such sentences occur, the more they clog the flow of ideas and the more annoying they become.

A: this shows that all advanced means of communication and communication equipment are controlled by the people, so the difficultiesof the past no longer exist. B: this shows that all advanced means of transportation and communication are controlled by the people, so the difficultiesof the past no longer exist.

Repeated references that need to be retained, but can be shortened
[simple restatement]
A: Has the political status of the Shanghai workers undergone any change since Liberation? Yes, it has, and the change is an essential, not an insignificant one, for they have changed from members of an exploited class into members of a ruling class. B: Has the political status of the Shanghai workers undergone any change since Liberation? Yes, it has, and the change is absolutely fundamental, for they have changed from members of an exploited class into members of a ruling class.
2. Self-evident Statement
In this type of repetition, one part of the sentence, while it is not just another version of the other, is nevertheless implicit in it. The result is a statement in which one element is so obvious that it can be taken for granted. eg: We must arrive at the station on time in order to catch the train.
[mirror-image statement]
A: People of the different nationalities have made enormous contributions to safeguarding the unity of the motherland and promoting stability and unity and prosperity.

Questions?
1. 2.
Was the repetition intentional in the origional? Did the Chinese writer merely slip unconsiously into a cliche pattern? If the repetition was used deliberately to provide emphasis, is it a better way to achieve that effect in English? How many times has the same construction already appeared in this piece?
B: People of the different nationalities have contributed enormously to safeguarding the unity of the motherland and promoting stability, solidarity and prosperity. A: to maintain steady growth of the economy, we must implement a long-term policy of steady economic growth
3. Change the Wording

Forms of repetition in Chinglish 反复提及
1.
Simple restatement (same idea presented twice in different words) Self-evident statement (one idea implicit in another)
2.
3.
Mirror-image statement (same idea presented first in positive form, then in negative)
1. Simple Restatement
This sort of repetition is already familiar: it is only an expanded version of a pair of redundant twins. eg: We must arrive at the station on time and be punctual. Sometimes the conjunction joining the two parts of the sentence is not “and” but “in order to”. eg: We must arrive at the station on time in order to be punctual.
