Comments on John Keats
If I had been asked to give some comments on a certain British writer before I read John Keats’s works, I would probably have wavered between hundreds of extraordinary writers. But now, no hesitation. It seems like I fell in love him after reading his poems, since from those poems, I got to feel the soul of John Keats.
John Keats, unlike Byron and Shelley, doesn’t have dignified and wealthy family but has the greatest talent for poetry from the time he lived until now. Keats’s poetry is always sensuous, colorful and rich in imagery. Sights, sound, scent, taste and feeling are all taken in to give an entire understanding of an experience just like in his poem Ode to a Nightingale, ‘Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs’ in which he uses ‘soft’ to describe ‘incense’. Keats has the power of entering the feeling of others, either human or animal. Keats delights to dwell on beautiful words and phrases, which sound musical. Also in his poem Ode to a Nightingale, Keats uses the sound ‘m’ to express peaceful atmosphere, making readers can’t help admiring his great talent.
Ode to a Nightingale is a personal poem that describes Keats’journey into the state of Negative Capability. The tone of the poem rejects the optimistic pursuit of pleasure found within Keats’s earlier poems, and it
explores the themes of nature, transience and mortality, the latter being particularly personal to Keats. In the first stanza, Keats expresses both his sufferings and emotional feelings after hearing the songs of nightingale. In the second stanza, Keats tries to use vintage to escape from the worldly pains and fade away with nightingale into the forest dim. In the third stanza, Keats wants to get away from the earthly sufferings by drinking. In the forth stanza, Keats realized that he couldn’t feel nightingale’s happiness completely only by drinking vintage. In the fifth stanza, Keats feels the fragrance of flowers and grass while listening to beautiful songs of nightingale. In the sixth stanza, Keats is extremely happy at that moment, but then he thinks that it would be great if he could just die right now in nightingale’s song without feeling any pain. In the seventh stanza, Keats realized that he himself is mortal while nightingale’s song is immortal. In the eighth, nightingale’s song is fading away, and Keats came back to his realistic life from sweet imaginary. In my opinion, Ode to a Nightingale is indeed a masterpiece among all the works of John Keats.
Actually, Keats’s poetry is just one reason why I admire him so much. Besides this, I am deeply touched and moved by his uncontrollable and sincere love for Fanny Brawne. From his poem Bright star, I can feel his steadfast and eternal love for his beloved lover and his great inner suffer
for not able to marry Fanny Brawne because of his illness and poverty. When the life of a great man is a tragedy, it is always much easier to touch people’s hearts and Keats is a perfect example. His deepest love for Fanny Brawne and his final failure of being with her make readers can’t help wanting to console him and heal his broken heart. After reading Bright Star and his love letter to Fanny, I can’t even get his image out of my mind for a really long time. If a reader can be touched in this deep extent, then the writer must be outstanding.
For me, Keats is a poet whom you can’t fully comprehend without feeling his poems whole-heartedly, and I believe after reading more of his works, I will come closer to his inner heart.。
