While wet weather may make us feel gloomy, it sharpens the memory and improves our recall. But those who feel in a good mood because it’s a sunny day are able to remember less well, according to memory tests carried by Australian researchers.Professor Joe Forgas, who led the research, said: “It seems strange but a little bit of sadnessis a good thing. People performed much better on our memory test when the weather was unpleasant and they wee in a slightly negative mood. On bright sunny days, when they were more likely to be happy, the flunked it.”The tests were carried out on shoppers at a store in Sydney, where researchers randomly placed ten small objects on the check – out counter. On rainy days, sad music was played in the store. When it was bright and sunny, customers heard cheery music. This was done to further influence them towards negative or positive moods. After shopping, customers were asked how many of the objects they could remember. Their scores were three times higher when the weather was had and they were feeling angry, compared with those tested on sunny days. The results were published in Journal of Experimental Psychology. A report on the findings said: “They point to a growing body of evidence that the way people think, the quality of their judgments and the accuracy of their memory are all significantly influenced by positive and negative moods.”Professor Forgas said, “We found that weather – inducted negative mood improved memory accuracy. Shoppers in a negative mood showed better memory and higher discrimination ability.”A worse mood helped to focus people’s attention on their surroundings and led to a more thorough and careful thinking style, while happiness increased confidence and forgetfulness.Being happy tends to promote a thinking style that is less focused on our surroundings. In a positive mood we are less likely to make more snap (匆忙的) judgments about people we meet. Mild negative mood, in turn, tends to increase attention to our surroundings and produce a more careful, thorough thinking style.Accurately remembering everyday scenes is a difficult task, yet such memories can be on importance in everyday life. Surprisingly, the influence of mood states on the accuracy of real-life memories is still poorly understood.56.What’s the major function of Paragraph 1?A.To attract readers’ interest.B.To introduce the theme of the whole passage.C.To generalize the whole passage.D.To describe a memorable experience.57.The underlined word “flunked” in Paragraph2 may mean “”.A.conducted B.failed C.passed D.understood58.In the research, researchers play different music to .A.make customers become sadder or happierB.help customers choose what they wantC.promote customers to buy more goodsD.get customers to make a quick choice59.According to Joe Forgas, on sunny days, people .A.will make careful judgments on othersB.tend to pay more attention to their surroundingsC.will have more confidenceD.will have a better recall60.What can we know from the research?A.Forgetfulness is rather troublesome.B.It’s important to feel in a good mood.C.It’s memorable to experience a rainy day.D.Gloomy days are good for memorizing things.BIn a surprising discovery about where higher life can survive, scientists have found a shrimp -like creature and a jellyfish swimming beneath an Antarctic ice sheet.About 180 meters below the ice where no light can get through, scientists had figured nothing much more than a few microbes (微生物) could exist. That’s why a NASA team was surprised when they lowered a video camera to get the first long look at the underbelly of an ice sheet in Antarctica. A curious shrimp – like creature came swimming by and then parked itself on the camera’s cable. Scientists also pulled up a tentacle (触须) they believe came from a jellyfish.“We were operating on the presumption that nothing’s there.” Said NASA ice scientist Robert Bindschadler. “It was a shrimp you’d enjoy having on your plate.”“We were just gaga (狂热的) over it,” he said of the 7.5cm long, orange creature starring in their two –minute video. Technically, it’s not a shrimp. It’s a Lyssianasid amphipod, which is distantly related to the shrimp. The video is likely to inspire experts to rethink what they know about life in harsh environments. And it has scientists thinking that if shrimp –like creatures can live below 180 meters of Antarctic ice in freezing dark water, what about other cold places? What about Europa, a frozen moon of Jupiter?Cynan Ellis – Evans, a scientist of the British Antarctic Survey called the finding fascinating. He said it was possible the creatures swam in from far away and don’t live there permanently. But Kim, who is a co-author of the study, doubts it. “The site in West Antarctica is at least 19 km from open seas. Bindschadler drilled a 20 cm – wide hole and was looking at a tiny amount of water. That means it’s unlikely that two creatures swam from great distances and were captured randomly in that small of an area,” she said.Yet scientist were puzzled at what the food source would be for these creatures. The accident has led to huge national mourning in Poland. But it may provide an opportunity for reconciliation (和解) between Poland and Russia, countries that have a troubled relationship. Many from the political elite were lost in the crash. Beside the president, the dead include the army chief of Staff, the head of National Security Bureau, the national bank president, the deputy foreign minister and other members of parliament. The Polish delegation was heading to Russia to mark the 70 th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre (屠杀) when the accident occurred. In 1940, about 22,000 Polish soldiers, intellectuals, and officials captured after the Soviet Army invaded Poland in 1939, were killed secretly by Soviet police in the forest of Russia’s Katyn. The Katyn Massacre had been a sensitive topic between the countries. The former Soviet Union always denied responsibility for the massacre. It was not until 1992 that Russian released archived documents about the killing.Katyn is merely a short chapter in Poland and Russia’s long and troubled history. In the 18 th century, along with Prussia, (then an important part of Germany) and Austria. Russia participated in three carve – ups of Poland. In 1795, after the third carve – up, the country was erased from the map of Europe. It was in 1918 that Poland regained its independence. But in 1939, at the beginning of the World War II, it was invaded by Germany and the Soviet Union under a secret pact. After the war, Poland became a communist country with close ties to the Soviet Union. In 1989, Poland switched to capitalism and pursued a pro – West position. The most recent tension between the two countries was in 2008. That year, Poland decided to have a US missile shield (导弹防御系统) on its soil, while neighboring Russia threatened to aim missiles at Poland. But the plane crash has created a chance for reconciliation, with Russia sharing the sadness of Poland. Russia has declared April 12 a day of mourning for the victims. Flags flew at half –mast in Moscow. It is an electronic revolution of sorts, made possible by the marriage of television and computer technologies. The world “television”, derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and Lation (vision: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through a sophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image (focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulse, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reconstituted into that same image.Television is more than just an electronic system, however. It is a means of expression, aswell as a vehicle for communication. The field of television can be divided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad – based airwave transmission of television signals. Second, there is no broadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest groups through controlled transmission techniques.Traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to what exists today. During those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBD, who have been the major purveyors(供应商)of news, in formation, and entertainment. These giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. We have come to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer.Directions: Read the following passage. Einstein remains the foremost scientist of the modern time. Looking back 2,400 years, only Newton, Galileo and Aristotle were his equals.Around the world, universities and academies are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Einstein's "miracle year" when he published five scientific papers in 1905 that basically changed our grasp of space, time, light and matter. Only he could top himself about a decade later with his theory of relativity.Born in the age of horse-drawn carriages, his ideas launched a technological revolution that has made more change in a century than in the previous two thousand years. Computers, satellites, telecommunication, lasers, television and nuclear power all owe their invention to ways in which Einstein exposed a stranger and more complicated reality underneath the world. He escaped Hitler's Germany and devoted the rest of his life to human rights and peace with an authority unmatched by any scientist today, or even most politicians and religious leaders. He spoke out against fascism and racial prejudice. His FBI file ran 1,400 pages. His letters expose a disorderly personal life -- married twice and indifferent toward his children while absorbed in physics. Yet he charmed lovers and admirers with poetry and sailboat outings. The robotic hand accomplished these tasks using only information based on touch. The work could aid in the development of robots that can manipulate objects in the dark.To build their system, the researchers attached 16 touch sensors to the palm and fingers of a four-fingered robotic hand. Each sensor costs about $12 and serves a simple function: detect whether an object is touching it or not. What makes this approach unique is that it relies on many low-cost touch sensors that use simple, binary (二进制的) signals—touch or no touch—to perform robotic in-hand rotation. These sensors are spread over a large area of the robotic hand. This contrasts with a variety of other approaches that rely on a few high-cost touch sensors affixed to a small area of the robotic hand, primarily at the fingertips. The researchers then tested their system on the real-life robotic hand with objects that the system has not yet encountered. The robotic hand was able to rotate a variety of objects without stalling or losing its hold. The objects included a tomato, pepper, a can of peanut butter and a toy rubber duck, which was the most challenging object due to its shape. The researchers are now working on extending their approach to more complex manipulation tasks. They are currently developing techniques to enable robotic hands to catch, throw and juggle, for example. “If we can give robots this skill, that will open the door to the kinds of tasks they can perform,” said one of the researchers.8.What does the underlined word “manipulate” probably mean?A.Remove.B.Control.C.Recognize.D.Distribute.9.What can we know about the touch sensors of the robotic hand?A.They are quite expensive.B.They are mainly in its fingertips.C.They perform complex tasks.D.They cover most of its area.10.Why is the toy rubber duck difficult for a robotic hand to rotate?A.It’s never been seen by robots.B.It has an unusual shape.C.It has a unique smell.D.It can damage robots.11.What are researchers probably focusing on at present?A.Upgrading robotic hand skills.B.Diversifying robotic hand shapes.C.Developing more new research tasks.D.Seeking new ways to develop robots.A new museum in Mexico aims to educate the public about the critically endangered salamander (蝾螈). The museum recently opened at Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City. The salamander is native only to Mexico. The animal is extremely endangered in the wild because its natural environment is increasingly threatened. The salamander has captured wide attention for its ability to heal itself when its body gets harmed. For example, the animal can regrow legs and damaged tissue. It can even repair problems affecting the heart and brain. Scientists have also documented how the salamander can breathe with lungs and gills. It can also take in oxygen through its skin. This can cause problems if the animal comes in contact with polluted water.“They are one of the few animals that can regenerate their skin, muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, heart and brain,” said Gual, a conservation official at the zoo. Speaking aboutthe museum, Gual said he sees it as a valuable tool to inform citizens about the unusual creature. “A hugely important part of this space is environmental education,” he said.In the past, salamanders did very well in Xochimilco’s muddy canals. The canals are the only remaining part of a once large waterway system dating back to Aztec times. But studies have shown the spread of cities, polluted water and non-native fish that eat the salamanders have led to their near-total collapse. As the museum opened to its first visitors, the salamander’s popularity with the public was very clear. “The truth is I’m very, very, very, very excited to be able to see how they eat, how they live, just how they are,” said one visitor named Fernando. The man, who did not want to give his last name, showed off a small salamander tattoo he had on his arm. “I’m marked for life,” he said.12.What makes salamanders gain considerable attention?A.Their ability to cure themselves.B.Their being in extreme danger in the wild.C.Their ability to breathe with all organs.D.Their serious habitat loss.13.What can we know about salamanders in paragraph 4?A.Their previous condition.B.Their favorite habitats.C.Reasons for their being endangered.D.Their advantages over other animals. 14.What’s Fernando’s attitude towards visiting the new museum?A.Confused.B.Delighted.C.Worried.D.Curious.15.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.A New Museum in Mexico Is Open to Animal LoversB.More and More Wildlife Is Endangered in MexicoC.Endangered Animals Should Be Protected in the MuseumD.A Museum Aims to Help Save Endangered Salamanders二、七选五you develop your own design style and give you the opportunity to work with other aspiring designers. The fashion industry is one of the most creative and competitive industries in the world.17 To be successful in this industry you need to have a strong creative vision, be able to identify trends and have the ability to translate your ideas into wearable designs.18 They will also give you an insight into the industry, what it is like to work asa fashion designer, and the different career paths that you can take. There are many different courses in fashion design available, so it is important to choose one that is right for you. Finding and keeping the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge.Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage. After listening to different voices, the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959.A committee was established to limit damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions from different departments and raised funds within the international community. Experts investigated the issue, conducted several tests, and then made a proposal for how the buildings could be saved. Finally, a document was signed, and the work began in 1960.The project brought together governments and environmentalists from around the world. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where they were safe from the water. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescue d 22 temples and countless cultural relics. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project. When the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. Not only had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow. The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today. If a problem seems too difficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide a solution.4.What was the major concern regarding the construction of the new dam?A.The damage to local farms.B.The high cost of the construction.C.The disapproval of local communities.D.The potential harm to cultural remains.5.How were the cultural sites rescued?A.By rebuilding similar cultural sites.B.By building fences around them.C.By taking them down into pieces.D.By removing and piecing them together again.6.Which of the following best describes the Aswan Dam project?A.International cooperation is not necessary for large-scale projects.B.It is possible to achieve progress without sacrificing cultural heritage.C.The opinions of experts should be ignored in favor of popular opinion.D.Countries should always prioritize their own interests over global concerns.7.What is the key to the success of the Aswan Dam project?A.Trial and error.B.Adequate investment.C.Global cooperation.D.Careful investigation.Since the last ice age, humans have cleared nearly half of the earth’s forests and grasslands for agriculture. With the world population expanding, there’s ever-increasing pressure on farmland to produce not only more food but also clean energy. In places such as Yakima County, Washington, it’s created competition for space as land-hungry solar panels (板) consume available fields. Last month, the state approved plans to cover 1,700 acres of agricultural land with solar panels, fueling concerns over the long-term impacts of losing cropland.A recent study from the University of California, however, shows how farmers may soon harvest crops and energy together. One researcher, Majdi Abou Najm, explains that visible light spectrum (光谱) can be separated into blue and red light waves, and their photons (光子) have different properties. Blue ones have higher energy than red ones. While that gives blue light what is needed to generate power, it also results in higher temperatures. “From a plant angle, redphotons are the efficient ones,” says Abou Najm. “They don’t make the plant feel hot.”A goal of the study is to create a new generation of solar panels. He sees potential in the organic solar cells, which come from carbon-based materials. Thin and transparent, the cells are applied like a film onto various surfaces. This new technology could be used to develop special solar panels that block blue light to generate power, while passing the red light on to crops planted directly below. These panels could also provide shade for heat-sensitive fruits during the hottest part of the day.By 2050, we’ll have two billion more people, and we’ll need more food and more energy. By maximizing the solar spectrum, “we’re making full use of an endlessly sustainable resource,” says Abou Najm. “If a technology kicks in that can develop these panels, then the sky is the limit on how efficient we can be.”8.What problem does the first paragraph focus on?A.Losing cropland to solar panels.B.Distribution of the world population.C.Reduction in forests and grasslands.D.Competing for land between farmers.9.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?A.Generation of solar power.B.Hot weather increasing efficiency.C.Blue photons having higher energy.D.Separation of visible light spectrum.10.What do we know about the organic solar cells?A.They make fruits heat-sensitive.B.They can cool down in hot days,C.They allow red light to pass through.D.They can store carbon-based materials.11.What does Abou Najm think of the future of the new solar panels?A.Limited.B.Promising.C.Uncertain.D.Challenging.While Industry 5.0 is believed to have started in 2020, the rise of AI in recent years has led experts to say it is now coming. Imagine AI-powered robots that see, hear, touch and more, pooling fresh data from across those groups of sensors to create that data with the vast ranges of digital data stored elsewhere online. The age is a major leap from the First Industrial Revolution, when steam engine started to achieve widespread commercial use.Professor John Nosta says, “The integration of sensory capabilities into AI models is not merely a technological leap. It represents a shift in our philosophical understanding of artificial and human intelligence.”He has also referred to the new era as “the Cognitive (认知) Age,” which will completely change how humans live, work, and think about themselves. According to Nosta, humans don’t typically think of computers as “experiencing” the world themselves. But that assumption will be challenged as more advanced AI systems are hooked up to ever more and ever greater sensors. The machines won’t just be logic boxes that humans input data and commands for processing. The AI will collect that data more and more on its own, experiencing the world for itself.“This is not just about understanding words, but also about grasping the tone, pitch (音高), and emphasis, which add layers of meaning often absent in written text. Image recognition adds another layer of complexity,” he added. “For example, it can analyze photographs, identify objects, and even understand the emotional content of facial expressions.”The Johannesburg-based business school is just one of many college-level programs attempting to investigate and teach its students about the still-emerging IR 5.0. Seton Hall in New Jersey offers a three-credit course on this latest age in human technology and trade; MIT has brought in guest speakers to lecture on the concept, and many other research institutions are following suit.12.Where does IR 5.0 differ from previous industrial revolution?A.It processes data and commands.B.It interacts with humans through texts.C.It enhances human sensory capabilities.D.It employs more senses in its application. 13.Why is IR 5. 0 called the Cognitive age?A.AI collects and interprets data itself.B.AI turns written texts into voice.C.AI understands written language well.D.AI has an ability of expressing emotions 14.How do some colleges address IR 5.0?A.By offering related courses.B.By expecting more industrial revolution.C.By applying AI to the technological trade.D.By preparing for the rapid economic changes.15.What is the best title for the text?A.Al Is Approaching Us Gradually B.A New IR Is About Machine LearningC.AI Has Developed Its Own Senses D.We Are Entering IR 5.0 NowPursue Y our Dreams Today, Not TomorrowHave you caught yourself daydreaming about your dreams? We often postpone our dreams, trapped in a cycle of delay. But why wait? 16 You don’t have to take a huge, life-changing step. You can take minute steps toward a brighter future. And start right now.17 If you never try, you’re going to be weighed down by your regrets. You’re always going to wonder how your life would’ve turned out if you actually took a chance on yourself. Don’t let your future self be disappointed by your present self.It doesn’t matter how old you are or how many people have warned you that you’re never going to succeed. Even the most successful people have had their hesitations about whether they had what it took to make it in their field. 18 Embrace a mindset of determination, knowing that success is within your reach. At the end of the day, you need to carve out a path for yourself that will lead to the most satisfaction. If you allow your fear to get the best of you, you’re never going to forgive yourself.19 . It’s what you would encourage your friends to do, so why aren’t you giving yourself that same push?Sometimes, following your passion means spending a lot of your time each day. It may require making slight adjustments to your schedule, but you don’t have to sacrifice everything to follow your hearts. Try to strike a balance between your current life and your dreams. 20 Pursue your dreams now, even though that means you might need to break out of your comfort zone, and even though it means entering the unknown.A.Ask yourself what would be worse.B.Starting small is completely acceptable.C.You owe it to yourself to go after your dreams.D.New opportunities may lead to personal growth.E.If things go well, you can gradually make further shifts.F.You need to move past your insecurities and explore your full potential.G.Hard as it is, it’s crucial to wave off the doubts in the back of your mind.二、完形填空As a first-generation Asian immigrant(移民)who had grown up in poverty, I knew I was beyond 21 to be admitted into Harvard. She seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during break. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone. One day I asked her why she practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation she said, “I want to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.” Well, I had to give it to her—she was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her school team to victory. One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. “Oh, nothing,”came a soft reply, “I am just too short.” The coach told her that at5’5”she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team—much less offered a scholarship—so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet. She told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing could stop her except one thing — her own attitude. The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was offered a scholarship and on the college team. In their study, the researchers examined groups of nine-month-old babies in new South Wales and Britain. And they came across astonishing results –it was found that infants had “social brains” andfocused not just on their mothers but on social life in groups as well.“They communicate with more than one baby at once, and show jealousy and generousness,” said Professor Bradley. He added, “They develop their own meanings through group interaction, they notice if a group member is behaving differently and they take on roles, such as leaders and followers.”“A baby who has a depressed mother tends to be withdrawn(内向的), but put that same baby in a group of its peers(同龄人)and they behave and interact like any other baby.”It was the first all-baby group study ever to be conducted. “Most studies of babies concentrate on the infant-mother relationship, assuming that is the single foundation for mental health, but babies are constantly involved with groups of people other than their mothers: fathers, siblings, grandparents and those taking care. Therefore, the ‘mot her-baby approach’ needs to be combined with a ‘group approach’,” said Bradley.Phoebe Christison, a child-care worker at Camperdown Sunshine Bubs in Sydney’s inner west, said she often noticed what appeared to be emotional attachments developed between toddlers. She said, “Joel(10 months)and Isabella(11 months)always like to hold hands when they sit in their high chairs and eat. And babies definitely show jealousy. They push and touch each other, and copy what the other is doing.”61. Which of the following statements about the study is TRUE?A. It’s the first study to look at all-baby groups.B. It divides babies according to their personalities.C. Its aim is to change the way of child care.D. Its results are unbelievable.62. A baby who has a depressed mother _________.A. tends to be a followerB. also enjoys group interactionC. has poor social abilityD. pays more attention to its mother63. What can be inferred from the result of this study?A. Babies are affected by groups more than by their mothers.B. There’s no need of child-care centers at all.C. Adults should include babies when having social activities.D. The normal infant-mother bond alone isn’t enough for the good mental health for babies.64. The underlined word “toddlers” in Para. 8 can be replaced by “_________”.A. adultsB. infantsC. peersD. groups65. The example given in the last paragraph proves that a baby ________.A. is born to be friendly to other babiesB. has interest in peers as well as in its motherC. may have emotional attachments to another babyD. shows jealousy and generousness as an adultCWant to lose weight? Try eating. That’s one of the ways being developed by scientists experimenting with foods that trick the body into feeling full.At he Institute of Food Research in Norwich, England, food expert Peter Wilde and his colleagues are developing foods that slow down the digestive system, which then sends a signal to the brain that stops appetite. “That fools you into thinking you’ve eaten far too much when you really haven’t,” said Wilde. From his studies on fat digestion, he said it should be possible to make foods, from bread to yoghurt, that make it easier to diet. While the research is still in its early stages, Wilde’s approach to controlling appetite is one that some doctors say could be a key to solving the problem of obesity.“Being able to switch off appetite would be a big help for people having trouble losing weight,” said Steve Bloom, a professor of investigative medicine at London’s Imperial College, who is not connected to Wilde’s research. Bloom said that regulating appetite through foods is theoretically possible. But Bloom warned that controlling appetite may be very challenging. “The body has lots of things to prevent its regulatory systems from being tricked,” he said.Wilde’s research makes use of the body’s ways of digesting fat. Fat normally gets broken down in the first part of the small intestines(肠道). When you eat a high-fat meal, however, the body can only digest the fat entirely further down in the intestines, which then causes the body toproduce a kind of chemical to stop the appetite.Wilde’s approach copies what happens with a high-fat meal. He coats fat droplets(滴)in foods with modified proteins from plants, so it takes longer for the chemical that breaks down fat to reach it. That means that the fat isn’t digested until it hits the far reaches of the intestines. At that point, intestinal cells send a signal telling the brain it’s full. Even though the body hasn’t had a high-fat meal, it stops the appetite as if it has. If the fat had been digested earlier in the intestines, no such signal would be sent.66. According to Wilde’s research, what could people do if they want to lose weight?A. Eat more bread and yoghurt.B. Trick the body by eating nothing.C. Have foods with fat droplets coated.D. Control their digestive system strictly.67. The underlined word “obesity” in Para. 2 most probably means “________”.A. being too fatB. eating too much foodC. stopping appetiteD. being unhealthy68. What can be inferred about Professor Bloom’s opinion towards Wilde’s approach?A. It won’t work since the body’s regulatory systems will never be tricked.B. It is sure to switch off the appetite of people with a weight problem.C. It sounds terrible because regulating appetite through foods is not practical at all.D. It’s no that easy to trick the body so more research should be done.69. Which of the following is TRUE about Wilde’s approach?A. A kind of chemical is added to make a high-fat meal less fatty.B. Fat is digested earlier and the body sends a signal telling the brain it’s full.C. Fat won’t get broken down in the first part of the small intestines.D. The chemical that breaks down fat will not reach the fat.70. Here are some results of it.Many teenagers suggest they should have a brother or sister. Perhaps they feel this might make up for a gap in their own lives.Bao Yunlu, a Senior 2 boy from the No 8 Middle School in Hefei, Anhui Province, often dreams of having an elder sister. “I want her to help me with my homework, share my feelings and take care of me,” he said. But last week Li Honggui, head of the China Family Planning Association (CFPA), sparked(引发) a hot discussion when he told newspapers there would be no change to the current one-child policy. It will remain the provincial governments’ right to decide on individual cases (个案).The one-child policy began in 1978. Now China has nearly 100 million single child families, one-third of the total. The policy has successfully slowed down Chinese population growth by 10 million babies a year. But there are problems. As the centre of the family’s attention they do not know about the hardships of life. “The one-child generation has no idea of thrift (节俭),” said Xing Yuan, professor of sociology at Shanxi University. Some of them also don’t know how to get on well with others.Bao agreed that being an only child has had an effect on his personality. “We are less tolerant (宽容) and considerate than our schoolmates who have brothers or sisters,” he said. But others don’t agree. “I don’t feel the difference between me and my classmates who have a brother or sister. They often complain to me about quarrelling with their brothers or sisters. I feel lucky to have nobody to steal my belongings,” said Bai Yijing, a Senior 1 girl from the Middle School Attached to Beijing Petroleum Institute. (from )What’s your opinion? Answer the questions according to the informatin given in the passage and required words limit.Scientists believe that conditions on Mars around 3.8 billion years ago were very similar to those of the early earth, when primitive organisms were spreading through our oceans. At that time, Mars would have been much warmer and wetter than it is today, with an atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide, just like that of the earth at the time. Under these conditions, it is highly probable that life may have arisen on Mars as well. But, even if life did not arise naturally on Mars, it does not mean that it could not have existed there. According to Professor Paul Davies of the University of Adelaide, Australia, life forms could have been transferred between the earth and Mars in wreckage (broke pieces) created by the impact of comet (彗星) and small planets on the surface of the two planets.Even today, about 500 tons of material from Mars lands on earth every year. It is mainly in the form of the dust but occasionally a larger chunk (厚片, 大块) strikes the earth. In 1911, a piece of Martian rock crashed in Egypt, killing a dog. According to professor Davies, it is in these chunks of rock, which were much larger and more frequent in the past, that life forms could have been transported from planet to planet."But how could these life forms have survived their journey through space?" Says Paul Davies, "The difficulty in believing this theory is that a bacterium on its own in space has to struggle itself not only against cold but also against deadly cosmic (宇宙的) radiation. But wrapped in a rock the situation is different. A rock ten meters across would shield life inside it from a lot of radiation and the temperature might only be minus 10 or 20 degrees, the sort of thing we have on earth."81. I sometimes get annoyed when I see older kids running up the slides or jumping off the side of the jungle gym(儿童攀缘游戏立体构架).After all, little kids play there, too—and they might get hurt. But honestly, I'm not so sure I can blame them for trying to make the playground a little bit more exciting. In our neighborhood park, there's not much to interest a kid over the age of 6 or 7.How is that possible? According to a report, modern playgrounds are no fun and excitement for thrill-seeking kids. all as a result of helicopter parents. That worries child development experts, who say that as kids become older and outgrow ( 长大而厌倦 ) the cookie-cutter equipment, they become less interested in playing outside. Child development experts believe that exposure to risk makes kids more comfortable with it—keeping them too safe can encourage anxiety. "We don't give our children enough space to help them test their limits or to help them become confident in their physical skills," Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek, a professor in the department of psychology at Philadelphia's Temple University, told the WSJ. "Sometimes when we protect people too much they never learn to take healthy risks."Of course, playground designers don't want to create spaces that lead to lots of children getting hurt. But there are ways to give kids a sense of excitement without risking serious injuries—for instance, the WSJ notes. "Specially designed climbing nets allow children to reach considerable (相当大的)) heights, without sacrificing safety in case of falls. "There are these types of more exciting playgrounds in Europe, and the movement is starting to spread to the U. S. "It's important that play environments are as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible, "said Ellen Sandseter. an associate professor at Queen Maud University College of Early Childhood Education in Norway. What do you think? Is your neighborhood playground too boring?56. Why does the author sometimes get angry according to Paragraph I?A. There's a lot of danger at the playground.B. There's not much to interest a kid in many parks.C. Little kids get hurt now and then at the playground.D. Some kids' risky actions may cause danger to the young.57. What's the best title for the text?A. Have kids been exposed to more risks?B. Why are kids' physical skills so limited?C. Have kids' playgrounds become too safe?D. Why are kids losing interest in playing outside?BRenault's new Twizy could be the future of motoring. . . or at least a big part of it. This is not some crazy future concept—this is a real vehicle, fully electric, and on sale now. Prices for the Twizy start at 6, 690,with battery hire from 45 a month. But is it a car? Technically no. it's classified under UK law as something closer to a moped(摩托自行车).A two-seater(the passenger sits behind the driver), the Twizy runs on electric power only. and is designed to cover all those little trips we do. And as 87 per cent of Europe's drivers do less than 37 miles a day—50 per cent less than 12—there's really no need to be burning gas for that sort of journey. The Twizy is arguably the most unusual vehicle in this country. Other cars have been beautifully designed, others have been small, but no car has turned motoring on its head in quite the same way.The Twizy's batteries have a range of 62 miles, and it plugs into a standard socket like any other electrical equipment, going from flat to full power in three and a half hours. There are no full doors on the vehicle, so think of it like a covered moped with four wheels, but no noise and no need for a helmet. There's also alower-powered type being designed, the Twizy 45. for which you don't need a license.Seeing the Twizy in the flesh, you're surprised by how striking it looks. Sit in it and everything feels right—just car enough to be easy. but different enough to be exciting. With the battery underneath you. the vehicle is suckered (吸.) to the road, and the electric power means it accelerates with real energy up to about 50 mph. You don't feel you need any more. In the UK, the weather alone may make it a good buy. but the lack of easy access to outdoor sockets is the biggest challenge. Only time will tell if this brave move answers enough problems to find a place in our lives.61. According to Paragraph 1, Renault's new Twizy _____.A. is a concept carB. is classified as a carC. can be hired by the dayD. has been put on the market62. Which of the following is TRLIE about the appearance of the Twizy?A. Attractive.B. Awkward.C. Traditional.D. Colorful.63. What do we know about the Twizy 45?A. A helmet is needed to drive it.B. It makes more noise than the Twizy.C. You can drive it without taking a test.D. Its batteries are better than the Twizy's.64. What will probably prevent the popularity of the Twizy?A. Its low speed.B. Its weak batteries.C. Its limited inner space.D. Its demand for outdoor sockets.65. In which part of a magazine can we most probably read this text?A. Travel.B. Technology.C. Economy.D. Environment.CAmerican transportation pioneer William H. Russell advertised for riders to work on the Overland Express Route in March 1860.Russell had failed repeatedly to get the backing of the Senate Post Office for an express route to carry mail between St. Joseph, Missouri—the westernmost point reached by the railroad and telegraph—and California. St. Joseph was the starting point for the nearly 2. 000-mile central route to the West. Except for a few settlements, the route beyond St. Joseph was a vast. unknown land where Native Americans primarily lived. Many thought that year-round transportation across this area was impossible because of extreme weather conditions. Russell organized his own express to prove otherwise. With partners Alexander Majors and William B. Waddell. Russell formed the Central Overland California and Pike ' s Peak Express Company. They built new relay stations and readied existing ones. The country was combed for good horses—hardy enough tochallenge deserts and mountains and to stand thirst in summer and ice in winter. Riders were recruited (招募) in a hurry but. before being hired, had to swear on the Bible not to fight or abuse their animals and to conduct themselves honestly. On April 3, 1860. the Pony Express began its run. On average, a rider covered 75 to 100miles daily. He changed horses at relay stations set 10 to 15 miles apart, swiftly transferring (转移) himself and his four pockets of mail to the new mount. The first mail by the Pony Express from St. Joseph to Sacramento took ten days. cutting the overland stage time via the southern route by more than half. The fastest delivery was in March 1861. when President Abraham Lincoln's inaugural (就职的)) address was carried from St. Joseph to Sacramento in 7 days and 17 hours. On July 1. 1861, the Pony Express began operating under contract ( 合同) as a mail route. By that time, the Central Overland California and Pike's Peak Express Company was deeply in debt. Though it had charged as much as $ 5 a half ounce for a letter at a time when ordinary U.S. postage was no more than ten cents, the company did not make its operating expenses. The Pony Express officially ended October 26. 1861, after the Transcontinental telegraph line was completed.66. The underlined word "backing in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by "_____A. supportB. benefitC. attentionD. job67. Before 1860. the central route to the West _____.A. was mainly taken by mailmenB. had become a well-traveled routeC. had not been explored thoroughlyD. was well protected by Native Americans68. It can be learned from the text that to search for good horses, Russell ____A. built new relay stationsB. put in a great deal of effortC. asked some riders for adviceD. walked through deserts and mountains69. According to the text, the Pony Express _____.A. had very few relay stationsB. delivered its first mail successfullyC. sometimes treated its animals badlyD. began its run in the latter half of 186070. Which of the following brought the Pony Express to an official end?A. The heavy debt.B. The high postage.C. A new method of sending messages.D. A new express company's establishment.Part IV Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions : Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the. Information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. The 9-to-5 work routine plays a big part in the lives of many people, and many find it hard to adjust to a life with no job. Problems experienced as a result of unemployment include the loss of earnings, as well as the amount of tree time that someone suddenly has to till. With some careful planning, however, anyone can cope with the problems of unemployment. The loss of earnings makes life more difficult when you are unemployed. A simple idea to carry out as soon as possible after losing a job involves writing down a full list of monthly expenses. Work through the list to identify those considered a luxury rather than a necessity. Cutting luxury items from monthly expenses will help preserve money to better endure (忍受) a period of unemployment.Besides, finding ways to earn a little extra money each month is advised during a period of unemployment. Searching the Internet provides a way to find paid tasks these days, with options including online article writing or paid surveys. However, try to avoid the websites that ask for payment up front (预付)or unreasonable personal information, especially financial data. Part- time job opportunities in your neighborhood might be another good choice. Keep an eye on the boards in local grocery stores for opportunities. As we know, finding a new job involves effort, and setting aside a period of time every day should help you find a job more quickly. Updating your resume to make it as professional as possible will help when you apply for jobs. Also. use this newly free time to network and get in touch with friends and former colleagues who might know about job opportunities.Section B (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. It opens the door for private enterprises to supply space vehicles.Alien's rocket will be launched from what will be the world's biggest plane. The rocket itself will be made by private space company SpaceX.The first test flight is targeted for 2015 with the first commercial flight the year after. Alien, the only funding source for development, indicated the project would cost $ 200 million or more.Fifty-eight-year-old Alien, listed by Forbes Magazine as the world s 57th richest person, is the latest in the line of billionaires (亿万富翁)p with interests in the privatization (私有化) of space travel. Alien said he has long had space fantasies. "I dreamed of becoming an astronaut. "he said at his office in downtown Seattle. Poor eyesight ruined his dream of becoming a pilot, but he said his ambition for space travel never died.Initially, his company will aim to fly unmanned rockets to put mid-sized satellites into orbit, and perhaps fly cargo (货物) to the International Space Station, if permitted.Since the Space Shuttle's retirement, NASA is under increasing pressure to show the next innovation (创新) in US space flight. The United States is dependent on partner countries' spacecraft to fly cargo and people to the space station, although NASA is working together with some private enterprises. After that. Alien's target is to fly paying customers into space, which he says has a huge potential market.81. Why is Alien planning to build a spaceship? (No more than 12 words)82. While wet weather may make us feel gloomy, it sharpens the memory and improves our recall. But those who feel in a good mood because it’s a sunny day are able to remember less well, according to memory tests carried by Australian researchers.Professor Joe Forgas, who led the research, said: “It seems strange but a little bit of sadness is a good thing. Mild negative mood, in turn, tends to increase attention to our surroundings and produce a more careful, thorough thinking style.Accurately remembering everyday scenes is a difficult task, yet such memories can be onimportance in everyday life. While some microbes can make their own food out of chemicals in the ocean, complex life like the shrimp can’t, Kim said.“So how do they survive? That’s the key question.” Kim Sai.“It’s pretty amazing when you find a huge puzzle like that on a planet where we thought we know everything.” Kim said.61.Scientists had believed that harsh environments could only have been populated by .A.jellyfish B.mammals C.microbes D.shrimp – like creatures 62.According to Kim, the shrimp – like creature .A.swam great distances to Antarctic B.has always lived in the regionC.gradually evolved from shrimps D.has nothing in common with shrimps 63.The finding is significant in that .A.it marks NASA’S first Antarctic biological studyB.it proves there is marine life in the AntarcticC.it could inspire further study of life in harsh environmentsD.it shows that Lyssianasid amphipod is closely related to shrimps64.The last three paragraphs suggest that .A.researchers will look at the places the creatures came fromB.ice scientists will drill deeper to find more creaturesC.scientists know very little about the planet they live onD.further research will be done about what the creatures live on65.Which of the following statements about the discovery is FALSE?A.Complex life usually lives on other forms of life.B.Scientists saw two creatures in the two – minute video.C.It is possible for creatures to live 180 meters below the ice though there is no light.D.Scientists captured the shrimp – like creature in a camera by drilling a hole through the ice.CA plane crash in Western Russian killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski and the other 96 political and military officials on board on April 10. The former SovietUnion always denied responsibility for the massacre. And earlier on April 7, Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin became the first Russian leader to mark the anniversary of the massacre.“I think it should improve relations between the two countries, as Russians feel our grief,”said Radek Sikorski, Pland’s foreign minister.66.Put the following events in order of time.①The Katyn Massacre②Poland switched to capitalism.③Russia divided Poland with Austria and Prussia.④Poland became a communist country.⑤Poland was invaded by the Soviet Army.A.③①④⑤②B.③⑤①④②C.①③⑤④②D.①⑤②④③67.After the accident, which of the following did Russia do to share the sadness of Poland?A.Flags were lowed to half – mast in the capital city of Russia.B.Russia threatened to aim missiles at Poland.C.Russia declared the day when the accident happened a day of mourning for the victims.D.Vladimir Putin marked the anniversary of the massacre.68.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.The Katyn Massacre was the very beginning of Poland and Russia’s trouble relationship.B.In 1939 about 22,000 Polish soldiers, intellectuals, and officials were killed by Soviet police in the forest of Russia’s Katyn.C.Altogether 96 political and military officials were killed in the accident.D.The relationship between Poland and Russia has not always been tense since the three carve – ups of Poland in the 18 th century.69.It can be conclude from the article that .A.the relationship between Poland and Russia will be even tenser than beforeB.Poland will cancel its plan to mark the anniversary of the Katyn MassacreC.no Russian leaders have marked the anniversary of the massacre before, though Russia released the truth in 1992.D.Poland will forgive Russians, for they showed great sympathy after the accident. 70.What would be the best title for the passage?A.The troubled relationship between Russia and Poland.B.Poland and Russia united by tragedy.C.The 70 th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre.D.A plane crash killing Polish president.PART FOUR WRITINGSECTION A(10 points)Directions: Read the following passage.Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information for the passage.Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.Television the most popular and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth –is moving into a new ear, an era of extraordinary sophistication and versatility, which promises to reshape our lives and our world. It is a means of expression, as well as a vehicle for communication.
