交通堵塞是普遍存在的问题。如何解决这一问题呢?了解一下短文中的解决方法吧!看看是否合理.
As China’s economy grows at a fever pitch1, and more and more people are moving into the major cities and industrial centers, traffic congestion becomes the order of the day. Traffic congestion not only creates headaches for commuters, but also reduces productivity by taking away valuable time from work. This sickness that plagues2 our cities must be at least put under control, if not cured. Some people insist that more roads be built to accommodate the increase in traffic, while others think that enlarging the capacity of public transit systems (buses, subway, trains) is the answer。 Building more roads would mean a lot of land will be taken—not a very good prospect for economic, agricultural, and environmental reasons. On the other hand, forcing everyone to take public transit will bring inconvenience to those whose use of their cars is essential to their work. Putting more buses on the road may have the opposite effect as big buses tend to clog3 up narrow streets。 Building an extensive subway system can be the ideal answer, but that is very expensive。 Clearly, we cannot go for one single solution。 A compromise4must be struck between the different solutions. My personal view is that for cities that have plenty of unused land, more roads should be built. Having special lanes reserved for bicycles and motorcycles should encourage more

Book4 Module 2 Traffic Jam Listening and Speaking练习 课后作业
Book3 Module 2 Traffic Jam Listening and Speaking练习What causes traffic jams? Too many cars, right? No! Some Brits are now saying that traffic lights are to blame for much of the congestion(交通拥挤). They suggest that traffic lights be removed at busy roads. They believe people are a better judge of when it’s safe to go, not a traffic light programmed by an absent regulator.A report from the Institute of Economic Affairs, a UK think tank(智囊团), argues that abolishing traffic signals would decrease congestion, reduce exhaust emissions(废气排放)and improve safety. The report said that removing lights should also prevent other bad behavior caused by signals, such as speeding up to catch a green light. It would also avoid the wasted time when drivers have to sit at a red light even if no one is using the green. The idea may sound strange, but it’s not new. Seven cities and regions in Europe are experimenting with no-lights roads.Drachten in the Netherlands has got rid of 16 of its traffic light crossings and changed the other two to roundabouts under a “shared space” scheme. At crossings, cyclists dutifully raise their arm when they want to make a turn, and drivers follow a first-arrived, first-through approach and communicate by hand signs, nods and waving. The result? Typical journey time has been cut in half, and accidents and congestion have mostly disappeared. There have been small collisions but no problem, said Hans Monderman, creator of the scheme. “We want small accidents, in order to prevent serious ones. It works well because it’s dangerous. The driver has to be responsible for his or her own risk.“The many rules take away the ability to be considerate,” Monderman added. “We’re losing our responsibility for socially responsible behavior.”So far, Drachten’s locals have called the experiment a success. “I am used to it now,” said Helena Spaanstra, 24. “You drive more slowly and carefully, but somehow you seem to get around town quicker.”Tony Ooostward, 70, was equally enthusiastic. “I am a walker and now you are the boss at the crossroads, everyone waits for you. But at the same time walkers wait until there are a number of people wanting to cross at the same time.”Owen Paterson, UK’s Shadow Transport Minister, visited Drachten. He said Britain should learn f rom the model. “The idea is to create space where there is mild anxiety among everyone so they all behave cautiously. No one drives fast along a busy street thinking that they have right ofway.”1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Don’t Count On Traffic LightsB. New Traffic Systems NeededC. Turn Those Traffic Lights OffD. Let People Have More Say In Traffic2. According to the report from the Institute of Economic Affairs, abolishing traffic lights would NOT lead to ____.A. more time being savedB. reduction of traffic jamsC. improvement of the environmentD. right of way being taken for granted3. The underlined word “collision” in Paragraph 7 means closest to ____.A. jamB. accidentC. troubleD. congestion4. From the passage we can see that the experiment in Drachten worked well because ____.A. walkers have become the boss of the crossroadsB. cyclists, walkers and drivers each have specially designed routesC. everyone finds that they have to do their share in regulating trafficD. drivers are more careful and wait for eyclists or walkers to pass firstTraffic jam and cities, it seems, go hand in hand. Everyone complains about being stuck in traffic; but, like the weather, no one seems to do anything about it. In particular, traffic engineers, transportation planners, and public officials responsible for transportation systems in large cities are frequently criticized for failing to solve traffic jam.But is traffic jam a sign of failure? Long queues at restaurants or theater box offices are seen as signs of success. Should transportation systems be viewed any differently? I think we should recognize that traffic jam is an unpreventable by-product of successful cities, and view the “traffic problem” in a different light.Cities exist because they promote social interactions and economic transactions.Traffic jam occurs where there are lots of people but limited spaces. Culturally and economically successful cities have the worst traffic problems, while decaying cities don’t have much traffic. New York and Los Angeles are America’s most crowded cities. But if you want access to major brokerage houses (经纪行), you will find them easier to reach in crowded New York than in any other large cities. And if your firm needs access to post-production film editors or satellite-guidance engineers, you will reach them more quickly through the crowded freeways of LA than through less crowded roads elsewhere.Despite traffic jam, a larger number and wider variety of social interactions and economic transactions can be made perfect in large, crowded cities than elsewhere. Seen in this light, traffic jam is an unfortunate consequence of prosperity, not a cause of economic decline and urban decay. So while we can consider traffic jam as increasing costs on the areas of big cities, the costs ofinaccessibility (交通不便) in uncrowded places are almost certainly greater. There is no doubt that traffic jam brings the terrible economic and environmental damage in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Lagos. But mobility is far higher and traffic jam levels are far lower here in the US, even in our most crowded cities. That’s why, for now, we don’t see people and capital streaming out of San Francisco and Chicago, heading for cities like California, and Illinois.1.We can conclude from the first paragraph that_______.A. traffic jam and weather are the two factors preventing the development of the big cityB. traffic jam seems to be very difficult to deal withC. if traffic engineers try their best, traffic jam can be solvedD. public officials are always criticized for misusing their power2.According to the passage, what’s the author’s opinion towards traffic jam?_____A. In cities, traffic jam is unavoidable.B. Traffic jam is both a sign of failure and a sign of success.C. Traffic jam is the consequence of successful cities.D. For a successful city, traffic jam is not unpreventable.3.By saying “decaying” (in Para. 4), the writer probably means_______.A. decliningB. developingC. rich and successfulD. strong and healthy4.According to this article, which statement about “New York” and “Los Angeles” is true? _____A. The traffic jam in the two cities has been worsened.B. New York and Los Angeles are the most successful cities in the USA.C. It is easier to reach major brokerage houses in the two cities than in other cities.D. Despite the traffic jam in LA, you’ll find a satellite-guidance engineer more quickly there. 5.What can we learn from the last paragraph? _______A. California is as crowded and successful as San Francisco.B. The traffic jam in San Francisco has resulted in the capital becoming empty.C. The traffic jam level in Jakarta is lower than that in the US.D. Traffic jam has caused terrible bad effects in cities such as Bangkok and Lagos.。

I stared down at my sweat-covered, shaking hands.I looked up again at the audience, realizing that these were real people. They were not just my mum and dad, who would say, "Good job!" even if I missed up the entire piece. What if I had the wrong music? What if I played the wrong notes? As it turned out, I was never able to answer these questions because the spotlight was waiting for me. I grasped my hands tightly together, drying off the sweat.Slowly I walked to the mud-brown piano in the centre of the room. It contained 88 demanding keys, which were waiting impatiently to be played. I swallowed the golf ball-sized lump in my throat and satdown. Slowly, I opened the music. Next, I rested my still shaking hands on the ivory keys.As my fingers played across the keys, I was becoming more unsure of my preparation for this moment. But the memory of my year of training came flooding back. I knew that I had practiced this piece so many times that I could play it backwards if requested. Although at one point I accidentally played two keys instead of the intended one, I continued to move my fingers automatically. My eyes burned holes into the page in front of me. Don't make a mistake when you turn the page!Needless to say, I obeyed myself with all my heart and mind, and, proud of my "page-turning" feat, I finished the rest of the piece without making a single mistake. After the final note died away, a celebration went into action inside my head. With the development of electronic publishing, many medical journals now have Web sites on the Internet, and some journals publish only online. A few medical journals, like the Journal of the American Medical Association, are considered general medical journals because they cover many fields of medicine. Most medical journals are specialty journals that focus on a particular area of medicine.Medical journals publish many types of articles. Research articles report the results of research studies on a range of topics varying from the basic mechanisms of diseases to clinical trials that compare outcomes of different treatments. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars. The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day's coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会). The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere jokingly named the bridge “Nutty Narrows. ”After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started construction. They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose (消防水带). It cost $1,000.It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching_them_the_ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.16. They often walk more than one dog at a time. Some walkers work for dogwalking services, especially when starting out. Others have their own businesses, and build by word of mouth and advertising. Dog walkers often work part-time, and some provide other services like pet sitting or transporting. In New York, dog walkers usually earn about $25 an hour. If you work for a dog-walking business, you may earn less;if you are on your own dealing with several dogs at the same time, it may be more. What do you have to do to be a dog walker?First, have a real love of dogs, and have a good knowledge of how to get on with dogs. Try calling dog-walking services to find out about openings. If you're on your own, you'll need to network and market yourself. You might advertise your services in pet offices, grooming businesses, or neighborhood papers. You will need business cards and a mobile phone, and have good references and a clean background. You'll also have to deal with taxes and insurance. You should be physically fit, friendly, neatly dressed and extremely dependable. Many dog walkers are bonded(被担保的)and insured, and this is a definite selling point to clients.Of course, you will be cleaning up dog waste! You will also be outside in all kinds of weather. You may have to deal with dogs that don't like each other, and difficult owners. It's also an up-and-down kind of business—clients can come and go.For pet lovers, spending the workday with dogs instead of navigating office politics is its own reward! You are your own boss—you can dress casually,_your doggy clients will love you unconditionally, and you'll get some great exercise!20. They must pay a deposit of $100.Those who get their names on the list early will receive $2,000 off the final cost of the car. However, Kitty Hawk has not yet announced the price. Its first flying cars are expected to go on sale by the end of this year.Unlike the Kitty Hawk company, Uber does not plan to build its flying cars. Uber expects to launch flying taxis in DallasFt. The company says that could reduce the travel time between San Francisco and San Jose, California from 2 hours on the road to 15 minutes in the air.Riders could use the Uber app to book a flying taxi to take them to their destinations. The company has not yet said how costly air taxi travel would be compared to road taxi travel.Sooner than you think, flying cars may appear in the sky. Much convenience as they will bring, just imagine having to avoid other flying cars. Also, what if your battery dies when you are in the air? And, how will you know where to land?

Last Sunday, I heard that some sports bicycles were on display in WU MART and that they were worth seeing, so I decided to go and have a look. But because there was no direct public transport from my home to WU MART, I had no alternative but to take a pedicab. Having made sure about the price with the driver, we set off. I found that it was much faster to take a pedicab than a taxi in the rush hour because pedicabs could go through narrow alleys while taxis couldn’t.。
