One Sunday morning,George Thomas,a baker in a small New England town, was walking through town when he saw a young boy coming toward him, swinging a bird cage in the air.On the bottom of the cage, there were three little wild birds shaking with cold and fear.George Thomas stopped the boy and asked him what he got there. The boy was happy and told him that there were just some old birds in the cage. When the baker asked him what he would do with the old birds, the boy said casually that he wanted to take the birds home and play with them.He would pull out their feathers to make them fight. He would have a really good time because he would enjoy watching these.George Thomas was shocked by what the boy said. How could a boy be so rude to wild animals? So he continued to ask the boy what he would do to the birds when he got tired of them, because he was such a naughty and cruel boy that he was sure to be tired of them sooner or later. The boy laughed and said that he had a cat, which liked birds,so he would give the birds to his cat.The baker got more worried and decided to help set free the poor birds. So he asked,“How much do you want for those birds, son? ”The boy looked at him in surprise, wondering if the baker really wanted to buy them.He laughed and reminded the man that they were just plain old field birds. They didn’t sing and they were not even pretty. However, the baker insisted and continued to ask him how much money he wanted for the birds. The boy stared at the baker as if he were crazy and said,“$10? ”注意:续写词数应为150左右。

In 2010, however, a car accident left her paralyzed from the waist down. For Hill, it was not the end of a dancing career but the beginning.Hill danced in her wheelchair right alongside her nondisabled high school dance team. It definitely took a lot of learning and patience to dance in a wheelchair. After graduation, Hill met people online who had suffered various injuries but shared her determination, and she invited them to dance with her. It was an amazing experience for her.In 2014 Los Angeles, she formed a team of dancers with disabilities she called the Rollettes. “I want to break down the stereotype of wheelchair users and sho w that dance is dance, whether you’re walking or you’re rolling,” she said. Dancing on wheels, the Rollettes discovered, can be just as fast-paced, artful, and fulfilling as the foot-based variety.Hill has attained what many people never will: her childhood dream. But the Rollettes have helped her find something else just as fulfilling. Every year she holds a dance camp for wheelchair users of all ages and abilities. She calls it the Rollettes Experience, and in 2019, 173 participants from ten countries attended. For many, it was the first time they’d felt they belonged. Steph Aiello said that working with Hill challenged her to be more independent. Edna Serrano said being part of the Rollettes team gave her the courage to get behind the wheel of a car because she had more confidence. The dancers aren’t the only ones feeling inspired. One woman saw the team competing and commented, “You guys are so awesome! I’m in tears when you rock! To be in a wheelchair can still be so beautiful!”24. What do we know about Chelsie Hill from the first two paragraphs?A. She got seriously injured in a dancing match.B. She stopped dancing right after a car accident.C. She dreamed of being a dancer at a young age.D. She danced in a disabled team in high school.25. What does the underlined word “stereotype” in paragraph 4 refer to?A. Conservative views.B. Participants benefited greatly from it.C. It is aimed to select the best dancers.D. It made Hill’s childhood dream fulfilled.27. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Chelsie Hill, An Artful DancerB. Disability, Good for DancingC. Help others; Help YourselfD. Attaining Dancing Dream In WheelchairCSince App Store was set up, it has been selling consumers one simple thing—choice. Whether you wanted to play games, read the news, or do a thousand other things, there was something for whatever you desired. Then something funny happened. Logging into the App Store today is like going into a shopping mall with only a coupon (优惠券)for one thing: There's so much choice; it might be easier to give up than to choose. It isn't consumers who are burdened, though. Too much content of all kinds also has economic effects. When countless choices are available, it causes pressure, pushing prices down and driving us a bit crazy. So what is the way forward? It may well be to turn less choice itself to the marketing strategy. There arc already signs that this is happening. Firstly content companies are looking to prevent their offerings from getting lost in the tons of stuff. Most obvious is Disney, which is planning to open its own streaming service next year. The point is to narrow the focus so that those seeking Disney cartoons will have one place to go, rather than being around various services.Yet if that represents a careful first step, there are more extreme options too. Consider the idea of a wine club: from tens of thousands of bottles each year, subscribers (用户)pay someone to select the most interesting ones. Perhaps what comes next for digital content issimilar—carefully selected offerings from trusted sources that put choices in the hands of someone else in order to get rid of the anxiety of choosing.Up to now, too much choice in digital media has only one solution: the algorithm But we've seen the trouble with algorithms on You Tube. They feed you only what you've already said you like, not things you may not know you're into. Worse, they have a tendency to serve up disturbing content. The way forward can't simply be more or better algorithms.Instead, it's time for digital companies to start thinking about how to put limits on things: on how much we can use a device, or what we are available to choose from.As we move further into the digital revolution, what people ask for is clear: Less.28.What will too much choice of content on the market result in?A. The shutdown of companies.B. Anxiety of consumers.,C. Poor quality of products.D. Negative influence on economy.29.Why is Disney planning to open its own streaming service?A. To improve its marketing strategy.B. To help people focus on less choice.C. To encourage more people to visit Disney.D. To provide consumers with various services30.In what way may a wine club and digital content in the near future be similar?A. Someone else will be employed to make a choice for consumers.B. Both of them will offer only a few options.C. Consumers will refuse to choose from too many options.D. Both of them will make a change about their products.31.What do we know about the algorithm?A. It manages to offer what consumers will possibly like.B. It helps to remove disturbing content from digital media.C. It offers consumers things based on what they've said they like.D. It'll solve the problem of having too much choice.DA MENTORING (导师制)program is giving life changing opportunitiesto Banbury youth.

Long, long ago, in a little village lived a humble(谦虚的) man named Ashwin. He went about making ends meet by pulling a rickshaw(人力车) and transporting passengers from one destination to another. Times were hard and he had to take the responsibility for supporting his family. One day, while returning from work, a man who looked like a wealthy person coming from the city stopped his rickshaw. He quickly told Ashwin the place he wanted to visit. His car had broken down and he desperately needed to get to the mentioned address urgently. After an uneventful ride, they reached the destination, and the passenger paid the fare.Ashwin, on returning home, found to his surprise that his passenger just then had dropped a small bag in his rickshaw. On opening it, he found 50 gold coins in it. He showed it to his family who couldn’t believe their luck. His wife said with joy, “Thank goodness. Now we find a solution to our problems.”That night, Ashwin couldn’t sleep. His conscience(良心) kept troubling him. At the crack of dawn, he woke his wife up. He said, “Lalita, I think it’s wrong to keep someone else’s gold coins. I am going to search for the man and hand over the coins to him.” Lalita was shocked and cried, but Ashwin stuck to his word. He tried hard to find the man, but nothing seemed to work.Eventually when he was about to give up, he saw that wealthy passenger. Ashwin ran to him and thrust(塞) the bag in his hand, “Sir, you left this bag in my rickshaw. I have been looking for you since then and I am so relieved to find you. Please take this,” he said.

Scientists have tried to e up with biological explanations for the difference between boys and girls. However, none were believable enough to explain the general picture. As one scientist points out, “There are slight geic differences between the sexes at birth which may affect the subjects boys and girls choose. But the difficulty is that by the time children reach school age, there are so many other effects that it is almost impossible to tell whether girls are worse at science and m aths, or whether they’ve been brought up to think of these subjects as boys’ ‘territory’”.Statistics show that in mathematics, at least, girls are equal to boys. A recent report suggests that girls only stop studying mathematics because of social attitudes. One of the reports’ authors says, “While it is socially unaeptable for people not to be able to read and write, it is still aeptable for women to say that they are ‘hope-less’ at maths. Our research shows that, although girls get marks which are as good as the boys, they have not been encouraged to do so.”The explanation for the difference, which is very clear during the teenage years, goes as far back as early childhood experiences. From their first days in nursery school, girls are not encouraged to work on their own or toplete tasks, although boys are. For example, boys and not girls, are often asked to ‘help’ with repair work. This encouragement leads to a way of learning how to solve problems later on in life. Evidence shows that exceptional mathematicians and scientists did not have teachers who supplied answers; they had to find out for themselves.A further report on maths teaching shows that teachers seem to give more attention to boys than to girls. Most teachers who took part in the study admitted that they expect their male students to do better at mathematics and science subjects than their female students. All ofthis tends to encourage boys to work harder in these subjects, gives them confidence and makes them believe that they can sueed.Interestingly, both boys and girls tend to regard such‘male’ subjects like mathematics and science as difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls avoid mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons.Mathematics and science are mainly male subjects, and therefore, as girls bee teenagers, they are less likely to take them up. Girls do not seem to want to be in open petition with boys. Neither do they want to do better than boys because they are afraid to appear less female and so, less attractive.81. Aording to scientific studies, girls can learnmaths as well as boys if.82. Those who made extraordinary contributions in mathematics and science.83. Why are boys favored over girls when it es to mathematics and science?.84. What caused girls to give up mathematics courses?.81. given enough encouragement.82. had the abilities of solving problems by themselves.83. Because teachers expect boys to do better in mathematics and science.84. Social reasons.。

One day I got stuck in the Tube on my way to work. The Tube—that’s what most people call it—is London’s underground railway system. It was about nine o’clock in the morning, the middle of the rush-hour. Nobody had expected something unusual would happen later and everyone was doing their usual: a pretty girl gave her boyfriend sweet kisses one after another. Sitting next to me, a young woman with a suitcase and a baby took a scarf out of her suitcase and made her baby a nest, so that it could lie more comfortably. In fact, the train had just left Green Park Station when, instead of speeding up, it started to slow down and then came to a stand-still.Ten minutes passed, though it seemed like half a day. the train didn’t move. Had the railwaymen forgotten all about our existence? Had there been a crash on the line in front? How serious was the breakdown? We had no means of knowing. However, to anxious people who are stuck in the Tube, I suppose it doesn’t really matter what it is that has broken down. What they care is when they can get out of the trouble.Twenty minutes passed. All hope of getting to work on time had long since gone. Had the train really broken down? Several people thought so, but they were wrong. A railwayman at last came down the length of the train to tell us that the power supply had failed, and that we were not to worry as they were working to put it right. We could not leave the train, as it had stopped in the tunnel (隧道), not at a station. There was nothing else to do. The weak signal disabled cellphones. Besides, the train was getting hot and stuffy (闷). I even began to wonder if we were going to stay there for the rest of the day.

Two months ago, my friend Lisa, Harry and I, planned to do something adventurous, so we decided to explore a deep cave in the outskirt of our city with some food, water, torches and most importantly our cell phones. But things were not going well. We could not find any vehicle to drop us there. At long last, we managed to find a taxi which took us to the outskirt of the city. Another evidence of bad luck was that Harry had left his cell phone at home. After we got out of the taxi, some of the locals told us the way to the cave. The cave looked very attractive yet still mysterious: the cave was so dark, and the tiny sounds made by the insects and animals could be heard properly, pulling us into the cave with some unknown supernatural power. As we were moving forward we made marks on the rocks along our path to remind us of the exit of the cave. And we always kept our mobiles in switch on mode to contact each other in case we got separated and even worse, lost in the cave.As we were moving forward, Harry felt that somebody was following our footsteps but he left his intuition to a joke. When we reached in the deep of the cave, we lost our way and gradually the fog spread everywhere and we were not able to see each other properly. All of us got very scared of what was happening around us. Suddenly, we noticed that Harry was not with us and then we vaguely heard a shout from the depth of the cave and we thought it was Harry, so we started searching for him. But our torches were left no use in such thick fog. Paragraph 1:So we groped our way towards the direction of the shout._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________Paragraph 2:After we reunited with Harry, we tried to find the way out._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________【答案】So we groped our way towards the direction of the shout. Frightened as we were, we still made up our mind to search for Harry. Hardly can we see anything in the completely dark situation, so we had to feel our way to search Harry with all strength. Slowly and cautiously moving forward, we held our hands tightly in order not to be separated. With the voice approaching, we realized we would meet Harry immediately. Fortunately, when finding Harry sitting on the ground, we sighed with a relief. After we reunited with Harry, we tried to find the way out. Without hesitation, we decided to hunt for these marks which we had made before. “I get it!” Harry screamed. Looking up quickly, we found these clear marks easily. It was with the help of these marks that we quickly found the exit. When walking out of the cave, we knew we were saved. From this experience, what we learnt was that it was dangerous to explore the unknown word without a fully detailed plan.【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者和小伙伴们一起去探索一个位于城市郊区的山洞。

A monk used to live in a hut at a side of a village. He read books all day long, without worrying for food or money. He was a very kind and tender-hearted person. All the villagers greatly admired his noble character. That is why everyone offered him food and wanted to help him.Once, it was a cold winter. The monk had a fire burning in his hut for warmth. Suddenly, there was a knock at his door. The monk wondered who it could be out at such a cold night, He opened the door and found a fox out there shivering in cold. She spoke, “I live on the hills out there. Heavy snow is falling there, making my life difficult. Please kindly give me a little room in your hut for the night. I will go away in the morning.” The monk politely called her in and said, “Don’t worry, dear. You can live here as long as you wish.” In the warmth of the heated hut the fox felt very comfortable. The monk gave her some bread and milk. The fox quickly ate it and slept in a corner. In the morning, the fox asked for the permission to leave. The monk told her to come whenever she liked. The fox again came back at the night. The monk talked with her about the day's happenings and gave her some food. After eating, the fox went to sleep.A few months passed and the season changed. One day the fox said, “You took so great care of me all through the winter, I want to do something for you in return.” The monk remarked, “Dear fox, it was my duty to do something for you. Please don't embarrass me by talking in this way.” The fox pleaded, “I am not trying to pay back your kindness. I love you and respect you. By doing something for you I will feel a great pride in me. I wish to be of some use to you.”Paragraph 1The monk thought for some time and hesitantly said, “I don’t need anything. But sometimes I wish I had a piece of gold._______________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________Paragraph 2It was now six months since the fox had gone._______________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________【答案】The monk thought for some time and hesitatingly said, “I don't need anything. But sometimes I wish I had a piece of gold. As you know, I have always been relying on the villagers, without whom I would be starving to death. Naturally, it has long been my desire to do something in return for their favor. All I can do is help educate their children. With no access to proper facilities and books, most of the kids in the village stay uneducated. A piece of gold is all I need to equip them with adequate knowledge so that they can have better chances of a bright future.” Hearing this, the fox nodded and promised she would see to it that the monk could have what he was longing for. With these words, the fox left in no time.It was now six months since the fox had gone. The more time went by, the more certain the monk felt that she wouldn't come back. One day, however, there was someone knocking at the door. The monk opened it and much to his astonishment, there stood the fox with a piece of gold in her mouth. She looked much skinnier than he last saw her. Deeply moved, the monk hugged the fox tightly with tears in his eyes. It turned out that the fox spent the last half of a year trying to fulfill her promise and she made it.【解析】【分析】本文属于读后续写。
