Unit 2 Cloning李仕才一、阅读理解AEnjoying a musical performance no longer requires a costly ticket or a trip to a theater. These days, musicians are performing in private homes, at haircutting shops, at airports... even on ferry boats.Musicians like house concerts. At music clubs, they often have to perform over loud conversation or deal with people who have had too much alcohol. People at house concerts are more focused on listening to the music.Just a few hours before the Bombadils started singing at the O' Hair Salon, Lindsay was cutting hair and Tamera was doing facials. Then, they moved chairs and microphones to create a small performance space. The Bombadils made music in the front part of the hair salon, near the hairdryers and makeup tables.“T his is our first show at a hair salon,” Sarah Frank of the Bombadils told concertgoers at last week's performance. Frank said she and band members, Luke Fraser and Kaitlyn Raitz had a great time “interacting” with the audience.Concerts in people's homes, or small businesses such as O' Hair's, are becoming more popular, musicians say. “There is a more relaxed atmosphere,” said Domenic Cicala, a musician who opened up his O' Hair Salon to concerts. “People really get to know the artists.”At house concerts, people get time before and after concerts to meet the performers. Often, the hosts or guests will provide food and drink.“People really like listening to music in the living room of a friend,” said Matt Hart, with Aubrey Zoli making up the Local Stran gers, a folkrock group based in Seattle. At many such concerts, the musicians do not need microphones. Yet, every word of their songs can be heard.【文章大意】本文主要介绍了现代音乐会在举办场地的选择上更加多样化。

Unit 2 Cloning阅读理解组块专练——练速度(限时:30分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AAt your next meeting, wait for a pause in conversation and try to measure howlong it lasts.Among English speakers, chances are that it will be a second or two at most. But while this pattern may be universal, our awareness of silence differs dramatically across cultures. What one culture considers a confusing or awkward pause may be seen by othersas a valuable moment of reflection and a sign of respect for what the last speakerhas said. Research in Dutch (荷兰语) and also in English found that when a silencein conversation stretches to four seconds, people start to feel uneasy. In contrast, a separate study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy withsilences of 8.2 seconds—nearly twice as long as in Americans' meetings. In Japan, it is recognised that the best communication is when you don't speakat all. It's already a failure to understand each other by speaking because you're repairing that failure by using words. In the US, it may originate from the history of colonial (殖民地的) America as a crossroads of many different races. When you have a complex of difference, it'shard to establish common understanding unless you talk and there's understandablya kind of anxiety unless people are verbally engaged to establish a common life. This applies also to some extent to London. In contrast, when there's more homogeneity,_perhaps it's easier for some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it's easier to sit in silence than with people you're less well acquainted with.语篇解读:本文主要讲述了谈话中的沉默文化。

Kanda really doesn’t like to walk alone. The scientist from a research institute of intelligent robots finds the experience so boring that he’d rather drive—even though he lives close to his lab and knows that walking is healthy.“I enjoy walking with someone, like with my wife, with my daughter,” Kanda said.“But they are not always available.”So Kanda, who specializes in humanlike bots, developed a robotic walking partner that could make small talk based on its surroundings, which,he hopes, might motivate people to get out and exercise more. The bot rests on a person’s shoulder like a boxy parrot. It weighs about a pound and a half and sits roughly 8.5 inches high, and is 3.5 inches wide and 10 inches long.A microphone,a speaker, and an internal camera allow it to communicate. It’s even equipped with a smile.Kanda and his team collected video from five different locations, including a garden and a shopping mall, and created a dataset of small talk topics related to each location. Then they programmed the robot to associate visual cues with specific topics.A special speech software provided the robot with a voice.Near a group of parked cars, for example,it might say,“In a big parking lot, sometimes I forget where I parke d.”They tested the robot on 15 volunteers,10 males and 5 females, who were paid and averaged about 26 years old.“Have you ever blown a puff of dandelion(蒲公英) seeds into the air?”The robot asked a participant, who smiled and responded,“Yes,I often did that w hen I was a child.” Altho ugh several participants noted the robot’s weight,Kanda was surprised that no one considered the experience strange or funny.“I guess people enjoy new technologies,” he said.Just like a human partner,Kanda’s bot isn’t perfect. It’s not able to go for walks in heavy rain and, while the robot can make expressions,it can’t really holda conversation, about which Kanda is most worried.Despite its limits,Kanda was comforted by the bot’s presence.“I felt a kind of sense of being with someone,”he said,“particularly when it spoke.”【解题导语】本文主要介绍了新研发的陪人散步的机器人。

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new recipes on the Internet or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new language. We use the Internet to connect with family and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. The list goes on and on.As far as the Internet being a part of our lives—well, that train has left the station. That expression means there is no going back. If you prefer boating, you can say that ship has sailed. So, there may be no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers.Study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online were more likely to have high blood pressure.High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra strain increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke.High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney disease. It is also closely linked to some forms of dementia, a brain disease. Dementia is marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and a reduced ability to reason.Let’s introduce something about the study of it.The HenryFordHospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. It involved 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old. One hundred thirty-four of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users〞. Researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use and high blood pressure. Other research has connected that heavy Internet use with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity. The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. In a statement she said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life but it shouldn’t consume us. 〞For the purpose of the study, she explains, teens considered heavy Internet users were online on “average 25 hours a week. 〞Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for tee ns to take “regular breaks from their computers or smartphones〞and to do some “kind of physical activity. 〞She also suggests that parents limit their children’s use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.【文章大意】互联网如此有用并且融入我们的生活, 但过度使用它, 会导致多种健康问题。

If you're making determination for a healthier new year, consider a gut makeover(肠道清理).Changing your microbe community(微生物群),however, may not be easy, and nobody knows how long it might take. That's because the ecosystem already established in your gut determines how it absorbs and processes nutrients. So if the microbe community in your gut has been shaped by a daily diet of hamburgers and pizza, for example,it won't respond as quickly to a healthy diet as a gut shaped by vegetables and fruits that has a more varied microbe community.“The nutritional value of food is influenced in part by the microbe community that encounters that food,” said Dr Jeffrey Gordon, the senior author of the new paper and director of the Center for Genome Science and Systems Biology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis.“Nutritional components of a healthy diet have to be viewed from the inside out,” he said,“not just the outside in.”One of the questions the study set out to answer was how individuals with different diets respond when they try to improve their eating habits. The scientists harvested gut bacteria from humans, transplanted them into mice bred under germ-free conditions, and then fed the mice either American-style or plant-based diets. The scientists then analyzed changes in the mice's microbe communities.Of interest, the scientists harvested the gut bacteria from people who followed sharply different diets. One group ate a fairly typical American diet, consuming about 3 000 calories a day, high in animal proteins with few fruits and vegetables. Some of their favorite foods were processed cheese and lunch meat. The other group consisted of people who were calorie-restricted.They ate less than 1 800 calories a day and had carefully tracked what they ate for at least two years, sticking to a mostly plant-based diet and consuming far less animal protein than the other group,a third fewer carbohydrates(碳水化合物)and only half the fat. This calorie-restricted group, the researchers found, had a far richer and more diverse microbe community in the gut than those eating a typical American diet. They also carried several kinds of“good” bacteria, known to promote health, that are unique to their plant-based diet.“Perhaps the best way to shape a healthier microbe community is to eat more fiber by consuming more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts or seeds,” said Meghan Jardine,a dietitian who was not involved in the current study but has published articles on promoting healthy microbe communities. She urges people to aim for 40 to 50 grams of fiber daily, well above levels recommended by most dietary guidelines.1.What can we know from the first two paragraphs?A.Changing microbiome is fairly easy.B.Ecosystem in gut is shaped by carbohydrates.C.Nutritional components are determined by food intake.D.As to healthy diets, microbe community shaped by vegetables and fruit respond more quickly than that shaped by junk food.2.What can we learn about Meghan Jardine?A.She suggests eating as little as possible.B.She attaches great importance to fiber.C.She is one of the researchers of the current study.D.She advocates consuming more meat in daily life.3.What's the author's attitude toward gut makeover?A.Concerned.B.Opposed.C.Indifferent. D.Nervous.4.Which is the best title for the text?A.Microbe community in our gutB.A gut makeover for the new yearC.Dietary guidelines for daily dietsD.The best way towards a healthier microbe community【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

Unit 2 Cloning李仕才一、阅读理解。

In many developed countries, people who have high degrees begin to work longer than those who don’t. About 65% of American men aged 62-74 with a professional degree are in the workforce(劳动人口), compared with 32% of men who only finish high school. This gap is part of a deepening divide between the well educated wealthy and the unskilled poor. Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled. The consequences, for individuals and society, are profound. The world is facing an astonishing rise in the number of old people, and they will live longer than ever before. Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600 million to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity(长寿) translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift(变化) will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling(渐增的) ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems.Policies are partly responsible. Many European governments have abandoned policies that used to encourage people to retire early. Even the betteroff mustwork longer to have a comfortable retirement. But the changing nature of work also plays a big role. Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and those people continue to reap(获得) rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive than the preceding(先前的) generation. Technological change may well reinforce(强化) that shift: the skills that complement(补充) computers, from management knowhow to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.【解题导语】本文主要讲述了在发达国家有专业技能的人的工作年限更长及其原因分析。

课时达标(三十七) Unit 2 CloningⅠAZhong and Hua Hua, using the same technique that gave to Dolly the sheep. These monkeys are not actually the first primates(灵长类) to be cloned. Another one named Tetra was produced in the late 1990s by embryo(胚胎) splitting, the division of an early-stage embryo into two or four separate cells to make clones. By contrast, they were each made by replacing an egg cell nucleus(细胞核) with DNA from a differentiated body cell. This Dolly method, known as somatic cell nuclear transfer(SCNT), can create more clones and allows researchers greater control over the edits they make to the DNA.Success came from adopting several new techniques. These included a new type of microscopy to better view the cells during handling or using several materials that encourage cell reprogramming, which hadn't been tried before on primates. Still, the research process proved difficult, and many attempts by the team failed. Just two healthy baby monkeys born from more than 60 tested mothers. This leads to many researchers' pouring cold water on the idea that the team's results bring scientists closer to cloning humans. They thought this work is not a stepping stone to establishing methods for obtaining live born human clones. Instead, this clearly remains a very foolish thing to attempt, it would be far too inefficient, far too unsafe, and it is also pointless. But the scientists involved emphasize that this is not their goal. There is now no barrier for cloning primate species. Thus cloning humans is closer to reality. However, their research purpose is entirely for producing non-human primate models for human diseases; they absolutely have no intention, and the society will not permit this work to be extended to humans. Despite limitations, they treat this breakthrough as a novel model system for scientists studying human biology and disease.语篇导读中国科学家利用SCNT技术克隆出了两只猴子,文章介绍了相关信息并讨论了这种克隆实验的影响。

B(2019·广东六校联盟联考) NEW YORK—A massive winter storm paralyzed much of the U.S. East Coast on Thursday and Friday, dumping as much as 46 centimeters of snow from theCarolinas to Maine. It also caused flooding on the streets of Boston due to swelling storm tides, forced the cancellation of nearly 5,000 flights and closed businesses, offices and schools. Some meteorologists(气象学家) classified the storm as a “bomb cyclone” for its sharp drop in atmospheric pressure would be followed immediately by a blast of cold air that could break records in more than two dozen cities and bring wind chills as low as -40℃ during the weekend. From Baltimore, Maryland, to Caribou in Maine, efforts were underway to clear roadways of ice and snow as wind chill temperatures were to plunge during the day, reaching-40℃ in some parts after sundown, according to the National Weather Service.Utility companies across the East worked to repair downed power lines early on Friday as about 21,000 customers remained without electricity, down from almost 80,000 the day before, and issued warnings that temperatures may become dangerously low.“If the temperature in your home begins to fall, we recommend taking shelter elsewhere until service can be restored. You can find warming centers by contacting local authorities,” National Grid power company, which serves Massachusetts, said on Twitter.Airlines canceled 4,000 flights on Thursday and hundreds more on Friday, according to FlightAware.com, an online tracking service.Mayor Bill de Blasio said it could feel like-30℃ on Friday and Saturday nights with the wind chill. “This is a serious, serious storm, and may be the most severe in 2018,” he said at a news conference.New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for the southern part of the state, while New Jersey Governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for several counties.【解题导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。
