限时规范练5(必修1Unit5)核心素养关键词:培养学生人与社会、服务社会的思维意识一、阅读理解AWanda Butts dropped the phone and screamed when she heard the news that her son was dead.Josh had drowned while sailing on a lake with his friends. The 16-year-old didn’t know how to swim, and he wasn’t wearing a life jacket.Josh was not alone in the black community.According to USA Swimming,70% of African-American children cannotswim.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,African-American children between the ages of 5 and 14 are three times more likely to drown than white children in the same age range. In 2007,Butts started the Josh Project,a non-profit project that provides low-cost swimming lessons for children in Toledo,Ohio. The swimming lessons take place at a local high school over four Saturdays for a total cost of $10.To date, the Josh Project has helped more than 1,000 children learn how to swim.“The public pools near our home were closed, and other places were not affordable,” said Lisa Haynes, whose 14-year-oldson,Joshua,is one of 60-plus students in the Josh Project this summer.“I am less worried if Joshua is near water because he has the basics of how to swim,” Haynes said.“And we’re thankful for that.”Butts is doing much more, however, than just providing swimming lessons.“She ups the awareness,” said Shaun Anderson,a swimming coach who was so inspired by her story that he created a Josh Project swimming program at Norfolk State University.“Once these communities learn how to swim, they will pass it down, which results in future generations that know how to swim.”Butts said she has two wishes for the future:One is to change the drowning numbers of African-American children, and the other is to have a swimming center where the children can swim daily instead of just once a week.1.What led to Josh’s drowning?A.He was never taught swimming skills.B.He was poor in boating skills.C.He gave his life jacket to a friend.D.He was careless when swimming in the lake.2.Why did the author list the numbers in Paragraph 3?A.To show children under 14 are more likely to drown.B.To argue children should learn swimming at a very young age.C.To show many African-American children lack swimming skills.D.To introduce the difference between African-American and white children.3.What can we learn about the Josh Project?A.It has its own swimming pools.B.It provides lessons only in summer.C.It serves children aged from 5 to 14.D.Its swimming lessons take place once a week.BI recently watched a woman film herself as she walked around an ancient building in San Sebastian,Spain. The place was rich in historyand the view was great. But she wasn’t looking at the blue sea or the old houses — she was looking at her camera! What are we missing by seeing life through social media? I’m not the first person to ask that question but I’ll also admit I’m part of the “problem”.I take photos of beautiful places and enjoy them just for their social media value.I remember a usually cheerful friend of mine going through his Facebook feed one day during a quiet afternoon at work.“I’m so depressed.Everyone’s going to the most wonderful places and having the most wonderful time,” he said.Except they’re probably not.One photo shows one moment in a day.People simply don’t post a photo of the time when they got into a fight with their taxi driver.Take the day that I got more “likes” than usual for a picture I’d posted on Instagram.I’d gone to a temple in Japan and spent the day climbing hundreds of steps to see what turned out to be a rather ordinary temple.I had seen a lot of temples by then and this one was a bit disappointing. That evening,I posted a photo of an ice cream with colourful little sugary decorations on it and was surprised by howmany of my “followers” liked it.But that ice cream didn’t sum up (概括) my day and I felt like a bit of a liar.Of course, that experience hasn’t stopped me using social media.I can see the advantages too —“connecting” with friends overseas, taking photos to remember the beauty of a moment, sharing our experiences of new places. We want to remember the good moments of travelling and social media helps us do that. But let’s not forget that’s only one part of travelling. Is that photo you just posted as important as being there in that moment and in that place?4.What purpose does Paragraph 1 serve in the text?A.To give suggestions.B.To introduce the topic.C.To express the main idea.D.To offer background information.5.Why was the author’s friend unhappy?A.He couldn’t finish his work.B.He got into a fight with others.C.He couldn’t enjoy himself like his friends were.D.He got few “likes” for the pictures on his Facebook.6.How was the author’s holiday in Japan in her Instagram followers’ eyes?A.Busy.B.Tiring.C.Enjoyable.D.Disappointing.7.What does the author think of using social media during travelling?A.It makes travelling much easier.B.It is less important than enjoying the journey.C.It will become more popular among travellers.D.It leads to misunderstandings about other people.二、七选五“Could you load (把碗碟放入) the dishwasher?” How many times have we asked our teenage children to do a chore and found later that it was done so poorly that we have to finish the job? 1 Kate Kelly, author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Parenting a Teenager, has some suggestions.2Don’t expect teens already know how to do something.Kelly says,“We left my teenage daughter alone for a few days.3 What amess!” If you explain a chore, you will probably find it’s been done well.Use the team method.Kelly says,“We do so much for our kids.4” So,according to Kelly, when teens do something like cleaning the floor, they enjoy giving something back to the family.“And always remember teens should be thanked and praised.”Give one task at a time.If you can’t stand how clothes are always being left on the floor, don’t let your teens get away with it.5 Tell them that if they keep throwing their clothes on the floor, they won’t be allowed to see their friends at the weekend, and that’s it.Keep chores gender-neutral(不分性别的).Don’t leave all the kitchen chores for daughters, and jobs like washing the car or fixing things for sons.A.Explain the job.B.Remember to say thank you.C.However,she had no idea how to separate rubbish.D.Watering the plants can be a good way of relaxation.E.We drive them everywhere, and help with their homework.F.Few parents are happy with the way housework is done by their teenagers.G.Make them pick the clothes up,but don’t add on other chores at the same time.三、语法填空Clara Hale was born on April 1,1905 in North Carolina. In 1932,Clara faced the saddest thing in her life. Her husband died,1. 第一部分必修1Unit 5Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2020年山东卷)In the mid-1990s,Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country,he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea:Lost Among the Ghosts of Empirein Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way:Rustam, his translator,a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California,Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers. This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand,Mr. Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana,he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼) followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan,he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.Mr. Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American,as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book,or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is,the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.()1.What made Mr. Bissell return to Uzbekistan?A.His friends’ invitation. B.His interest in the country.C.His love for teaching. D.His desire to regain health.()2.What does the underlined work “that” in Paragraph2 refer to?A.Developing a serious mental disease.B.Taking a guided tour in Central Asia.C.Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan.D.Writing an article about the Aral Sea.()3.Which of the following best describes Mr. Bissell’s road trip in Uzbekistan?A.Romantic. B.Eventful.C.Pleasant. D.Dangerous.()4.What is the purpose of this text?A.To introduce a book. B.To explain a cultural phenomenon.C.To remember a writer. D.To recommend a travel destination.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了Tom Bissell写的一本关于咸海和他旅行经历的书。

必修1 Unit 5 Nelson Mandela — a modern hero李仕才一、阅读理解Grey clouds move as low as smoke over the treetops at Lolo Pass. The ground is white. The day is June 10.It has been snowing for the past four days in the Bitterroot Mountains. Wayne Fairchild is getting worried about our trek over the Lolo Trail-95 miles from Lolo Montana to Weippe in Idaho, across the roughest country in the West. Lewis and Clark were nearly defeated 200 years ago by snowstorms on the Lolo. Today Fairchild is nervously checking the weather reports. He has agreed to take me across the toughest, middle section of the trail. When Lewis climbed on top of Lemhi Pass,140 miles south of Missoula, on Aug.12,1805,he was astonished by what was in front of him; "high mountain chains still to the West of us with their tops partially covered with snow." Nobody in what was then the US knew the Rocky Mountains existed, with peaks twice as high as anything in the Appalachians back East.Today their pathway through those mountains holds more attraction than any other ground over which they traveled, for its raw wilderness is an evidence to the character of two cultures: the explorers who braved its hardships and the Native Americans who prize and conserve the path as a sacred (神圣的)gift. It remains today the same condition as when Lewis and Clark walked it.The Lolo is passable only from July to mid-September. Our luck is holding with the weather, although the snow keeps getting deeper. As we climb to Indian Post Office, the highest point on the trail at 7,033 ft, we have covered 13 miles in soft snow, and we hardly have enough energy to make dinner. After a meal of chicken, I sit on a rock on top of the ridge (山脊).There is no light visible in any direction, not even another campfire. For four days we do not see another human being. We are occupied with the things that mix fear with joy. In our imagination we have finally caught up with Lewis and Clark.1. We learn from the text that before 1805 .A. The Rocky Mountains were wholly covered with snowB. there were no people living in the western part of AmericaC.no Americans knew of the existence of the Rocky MountainsD. the Appalachians were the western frontier of the United States2.We learn from the text that the Lolo Pass .A. has changed a lot since 1805B.is the meeting point of three culturesC. remains much the same as it was 200 years agoD. now attracts a large number of tourists to visit3.Judging from the text, Lewis and Clark were most probably .A. two native IndiansB. explorers of the early 19th centuryC. merchants who did business with the IndiansD. travelers whose curiosity took them over the Lolo Pass4.We can infer from the text that when crossing the Lolo Pass the author .A. was attempting the impossibleB. was trying to set a world recordC. was following the trail of Lewis and ClarkD. was fighting with weather and taking unnecessary risks【文章大意】本文纪录的是一次追寻前人足迹的探险,尽管天气、路程等的艰难,但是在作者看来却是已经赶上了以前的探险者。

Reading Comprehension (20 points)AThe evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image 〔形象〕of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seem to be about their families,〞said on e member of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious〔叛逆的〕and selfish, but actually they have other things on their minds: they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation〔商议〕and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.〞So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat t heir children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me," says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. As long as they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.〞Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.〞Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments, “Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over.〞31. What is the popular image of teenagers today?A. They worry about school.B. They dislike living with their parents.C. They have to be locked in to avoid troubles.D. They quarrel a lot with other family members.32. The study shows that teenagers don’t want to__________ .A. share family responsibilityB. cause trouble in their familiesC. go boating with their familyD. make family decisions33. Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today’s parents__________ .A. go to clubs more often with their childrenB. are much stricter with their childrenC. care less about their children’s lifeD. give their children more freedom34. According to the author, teenage rebellion__________ .A. may be a false beliefB. is common nowadaysC. existed only in the 1960sD. resulted from changes in families35. What is the passage mainly about?A. Negotiation in family.B. Education in family.C. Harmony in family.D. Teenage trouble in family.BThe report came to the British on May 21, 1941. Ⅱ.阅读理解Leymah Gbowee, ever awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, dreamed of peace and made it happen, founding a movement of women who brought peace and a female president to Liberia. On the night of her high school graduation party, surrounded by family, neighbors, and friends, Leymah Gbowee imagined a bright future. She planned to study biology and chemistry in college and become a pediatrician. Instead, Gbowee writes in her autobiography, Mighty Be Our Powers, within six months of that party in 1989, everything around her was gone—her country torn apart by civil war, her family broken, her plans abandoned. And Gbowee never became a doctor. Gbowee saw civilians murdered before her eyes. She fled with relatives from one shelter to another, often went hungry. Upon returning to Liberia in 1991, she saw a terrible sight: everyone had fled, leaving their homes to the fighters.Yet her spirit wouldn't die. She began studying under a UNICEF program. Finally, with her family's help, she imagined a movement of women demanding peace in Liberia and made it happen. Traveling from village to village, Gbowee began organizing women and persuaded women of different cultures to unite; under her leadership, thousands of women were dressed all in white to symbolize peace. Gbowee writes:“We were silent before, but after so many of us have been killed, fallen with diseases, and lost our children and families, war has taught us that the future lies in saying no to violence and yes to peace!”The women had reason to fear, but Gbowee had no choice. Then women could register to vote. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Africa's first female president in 2005. Gbowee's work was just beginning. She now travels the world, meeting with everyone from presidents to CEOs to people living in tiny villages, fighting for women and girls.文章大意:本文是一篇人物介绍。
