On the Origin of Dialect

Abstract:Since m odern linguistics was introduced into China,dialect has been taken as the equivalent to “Fangyan”(language forms used by different parts or regions inside or outside of China).In fact,dialect is not a g ood equivalent to Fangyan in Chinese.In the article,the author stresses that“Fangyan”in Chinese can be traced back to the book Fangyan by Y ang X iong in Han Dynasty,in which s ome heterogeneous Chinese is als o mentioned. In Chinese history,“Fangyan”and“G uoyu”refer to not only Chinese but als o other languages.Based on the mate2 rials concerned,this article is intended to s ort out the different terms for Y uyan(languages)and Fangyan(dialects) in Chinese history.
